= TACTICS FOR SURVIVAL =
===========================================================================
By now if you have efforted to put in a bit of time to playing Marz, you
will know that Marz is not your average mecha beat-em'-up. If you even want
to proceed with the game and pass the higher difficulties, certain tactics
have to be observed which I consider as essential to the gameplay of Marz.
Button mashing is pointless as a friend has proven and will often lead you
to your doom sooner than you expect.

I don't profess myself to be an expert on the tactical aspects on Virtual
On as Nyan puts it, I have just about as much tactical sense as a rock on
high. This section will rather however, give some common advice on how to
use some of the common tactics that veterans use and hopefully, you will
be able to implement them into your own style of playing. Your very own
style of playing is important to you as well and I place this as top
priority when you are trying out in Virtual On. It defines yourself as
a pilot.

This list will be constantly updated as I experiment further with Marz. =)

Without further ado, let's begin:

:: LINE OF SIGHT ::
I can't stress this tactic enough. Effective gameplay always equates to
having your enemy within your line of sight ALL THE TIME. Having your
opponent within your line of sight also means that you'll be able to see
almost every single thing he/she/it will be throwing at you. Knowing what
your opponent is going to toss at you is of utmost importance, especially
if you are playing on a stage that is lightly obstacled. Imagine having
your back to an Apharmd J Type C and not seeing that CW CC coming until
it's too late! Always use jump cancels (press JUMP button followed by
GUARD / CROUCH button) to effectively re-orient yourself to face the
opponent. Jump cancels are the simplest and yet most effective tactic all
aspiring VO pilots SHOULD (not TRY!) to incorporate into their playing
styles. This is the beginning step and is one of the most basic foundation
tactic that you should learn ASAP. You know you have executed a good and
effective jump cancel when you see your VR do a quick hop on the spot and
turn to face the opponent.

:: MOVEMENT ::
ALWAYS KEEP MOVING! Anyone with enough common sense should know that
constant movement on a battlefield will make it harder for the enemy to
hit you and Marz is no different. Any VR not moving is just screaming to be
hit. Any veteran can tell you the usefulness of this tactic. Not only does
it keep you in constant motion, thus making it harder for the enemy to hit
you, you can also use movement to play mind games with the opfor.

Mix and match the types of movement for a confusing gameplay. Opponent
thinks you are going to dash? Walk instead. Opponent thinks you're going
to charge right at him? Vector jump. Never EVER be predictable in your
movement either. You will only be setting yourself up to walk into your
opponent's trap.

Never also, dash till it expires. Against a rookie, you might have chances
of pulling it off safely. Against veterans, they will set up attacks
(sometimes with very painful ones) that will either hit you as you dash or
when you recover from it. Unless you feel like dying an idiot's death,
always use dash cancels for any emergency evasion moves. The dash cancel is
another good tactical move to add to your playing style. This is performed
by pressing the Turbo button again during your dash.

Of course, I needn't to mention that charging directly and straight on at
an enemy is stupid too. Raiden's Lasers anyone?

:: ATTACKING ::
The primary focus of any versus game is to try and deplete your opponent's
life before he depletes yours. VO is no different but attacking blindly
and carelessly might just turn the tables on you in no time. The following
paragraph will seek to highlight some of the moves best avoid whenever
possible and an explaination of why:

= Jump Attacks
So you decide that ground attacks are not effective against your opponent.
So you take to the air, trying to knock him or her down. To your massive
horror as you reach the apex of your jump, the last thing you see on your
screen is a pair of nice shiny lasers before your VR drops limply to the
ground, exploding.

The above scenario seems simplistically stupid but also one I have seen
repeated countless of times. Never EVER try jumping attacks (that is, jump
and attack) unless you want to die an idiot's death. Jumping attacks have
been watered down a great deal in Marz and this is even more evident in the
loss of the ability to fire two weapons in the air for the Myzr / Cypher /
Viper series, so it is recommended you don't do jump attacks. It'll
definitely play the biggest role in saving you from nasty counterattacks.

If you must (die die also must do) aerial attacks, make sure you at least
will hit with whatever you're throwing at the opponent or throw a
diversionary weaponry as you come down. Angelan is rather adept at the
latter tactic. If not, pray you land on top or behind an obstacle as you
land. Else...

= Dashing Attacks
Don't get me wrong. Dashing attacks are useful when used properly but just
about too many times I have seen people overly abusing dashing attacks,
thinking its a "god" tactic. Note that once you start dashing AND attacking,
you cannot stop your dash until it expires on its own. Repeat same
counterattack sequence here. If you need to execute a dashing attack of any
sort, here are two tips on doing so:

    - Dash AFTER your enemy has done so.
    - Attack when you're nearing the end of your dash.

The former is useful as you can dash and attack the opponent at the point
where his dash has ended and he is in the recovery animation. In range and
want a classy attack? Try a dashing CC.

The latter is not exactly as useful as the first. Basically, it entails
attacking when you're nearing the end of your dash so that it basically
provides a cover of some sorts as your VR slows to a stop. The recovery for
this isn't all that great either. Try not to dash attack too much as the
individual VRs turning rate and accuracy in dashing attack has been greatly
tuned down. Unless you're going straight with the enemy within your sights,
your chances of hitting the enemy would be slim. Read COUNTERATTACK.

= EVASION =
ALWAYS KEEP MOVING! Another point that I pride as a first in VO tactics.
Moving makes it harder for enemy to keep a lock on you and that's exactly
what you want isn't it? Movement for VRs can come in different styles and
sorts. You can walk, dash, jump or mix all three for one hell of a
confusing gameplay to your opponent. Watari dashing - the art of changing
directions 90 degrees to your current trajectory direction - is perhaps one
of the best moves any pilot can master for evasion / counterattack. You
execute this by tapping your desired direction while your VR is in the
midst of a dash. Unfortunately, Marz seems to have toned down the duration
of VR's dash so at most you can watari is 1-2 times. Multiple watari in a
single dash is not recommended for Marz because of the long turning time it
takes for a VR to lock onto its target, not to mention that the AI is
exceptionally good at evasion, especially in Ultimate mode. ==X

Use the various obstacles around the stage to your advantage but please,
do NOT hide behind them all the time. You'll be ultimately branded cheap
by the fanatics. Besides, VRs who have insane CC range like the Temjins,
can CC you through the obstacle, so be careful when trying to hide behind
one while an enemy is on the other side.

:: GUAGE MANAGEMENT ::
Not actually ranked very high on the importance list but it still commands
a decent amount of attention, depending on the player type you are. Careful
and tactical use of your guage will always ensure that you have your
desired weapon at the time you need it. This is important, especially when
facing against a veteran who knows exactly what he or she is doing. You
don't want to be caught guageless at the point when you need it. It might
just cost you your round / game. To effectively manage your guage, you of
course will need to roughly memorise exactly how much guage a move takes
off while executing. While this will take sometime to get accquainted to,
do so as fast at your own convinence. It will help to save your life in the
long run.

Hyper bombardment players are most adept at managing their guages, thus
making them highly dangerous as they can throw out move after move,
flooding you with shots that will force you to focus on evasion instead of
assault. Challenge with caution.

:: STAGE KNOWLEDGE ::
In effect, this is considered side tactic and not at all exactly very
important but useful when it comes to having that lil' bit of advantage
over your opponent. Some fanatics / veterans have taken to memorising the
stage layouts and locations of obstacles so that they can set up very
painful counter / traps for you. If you want to, you can do so at your own
leisure. =)

In short, Virtual On is not just about trying to beat the crap out of your
opponently mindlessly, button mashing or throwing out the most powerful
weapon you have in your arsenal and hoping to win. The aim of VO lies
mostly in smart playing and that means to fight in such a way that the
enemy will have a hard time trying to find loopholes in your attacks and
you leaving none for him to sniff. Its all about how to whack your
opponent while making him run circles trying to hit you.

Experiment and find your own style of playing that suits you. Different
playing styles suit different people and interesting varients come along
that way. Drop me an e-mail if you find something interesting ^_^
