Kumite Mode is a new mode put in for the first time in the Virtua
Fighter series. In it, you constantly fight opponents, gaining ranks as
you go. Along the way, you unlock items, costumes, and new arenas for you
to fight in. The characters in Kumite are taken from the Japanese arcade
version of the game. In Japan, you could have a memory card and save your
fighter and fight other fighters in Japan. Below is a listing of the
rankings, and how to advance from each rank to the next.

Kyu
=====
- The beginning level of Kumite, there are ten ranks to advance through,
in descending order from 10 to 1
- You gain a ranking match in Kyu for every 100 experience points you
receive. You gain experience points for defeating opponents. Higher ranked
opponents give more experience points than lower ranked ones.
- You cannot go down in rank
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dan
=====
- The second level of Kumite, there are ten ranks to advance through, on
ascending order from 1 to 10
- Experience points are replaced by victory points. You gain or lose
victory points by winning or losing to a same-ranked opponent. You gain +1
victory point for every same-rank opponent you defeat, and lose -1 victory
point for every same-rank opponent you lose to
- After you receive +5 victory points, you go up a rank, and if you
receive - 5 victory points, you go down a rank.
- Winning or losing to an opponent who is not the same rank as you has no
effect on your progress, even if they are a higher rank than you
- Once you reach 10th Dan, you must either defeat 10 consecutive 10th Dan
ranked opponents or defeat one Hero-ranked opponent
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hero - Champion
=================
- The third level of Kumite, there are two ranks before they split off
- To advance from Hero to Champion, you must defeat 10 10th Dan-ranked
opponents consecutively. However, if you lose to any 10th Dan, you are
instantly demoted to 10th Dan
- To advance from Champion to the next class of Kumite, you must defeat 5
Champion-ranked opponents consecutively. You cannot lose rank at this
level.
- If you have a 77% win percentage or lower when you defeat the 5th
Champion-ranked opponent, you will advance to the Adept-Master-Grand
Master branch. If you have 78% win percentage or higher, you will advance
to the Conquerer-Vanquisher-Subjugator branch
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adpet - Master - Grand Master
===============================
- Even though this branch is at the same location as the Conquerer-
Vanquisher-Subjugator branch, it is considered a lower rank and is the
fourth level of Kumite
- The victory point system is once again in effect. However, this time you
gain +1 victory point for every same rank opponent you defeat, but lose -1
victory point if you lose to an Adept, Master, Grand Master, Conquerer,
Vanquisher, or Subjugator
- You go up a rank once you reach +5 victory points, and go down a rank
once you get -5 victory points
- After you reach Grand Master rank, there are two different paths from
there. If you have +12 victory points, you will become a Demonlord, and if
you have 10 consecutive wins over same rank opponents, you will become a
Stormlord
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conquerer - Vanquisher - Subjugator
=====================================
- Even though this branch is at the same location as the Adept-Master-
Grand Master branch, it is considered a higher rank and is the fifth level
of Kumite
- The victory point system is once again in effect. However, this time you
gain +1 victory point for every same rank opponent you defeat, but lose -1
victory point if you lose to an Adept, Master, Grand Master, Conquerer,
Vanquisher, or Subjugator
- You go up a rank when you reach +5 victory points, and go down a rank
once you get -5 victory points
- After you reach Subjugator rank, there are two different paths from
there. If you have +12 victory points, you will become a Demonlord, and if
you have 10 consecutive wins over same rank opponents, you will become a
Stormlord.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Demonlord - Shadowlord - Battlelord - Emperor
===============================================
- Even though this branch is at the same location as the Stormlord-
Thunderlord-Dragonlord-High King branch, it is considered a lower rank and
is the sixth level of Kumite
- To advance here, you must defeat 10 same ranked opponents consecutively.
However, you lose a rank if you have 2 consecutive losses to a Demonlord,
Shadowlord, Battlelord, Stormlord, Thunderlord, or Dragonlord.
- Once you reach Battlelord, you must defeat 20 same ranked opponents
consecutively to advance to Emperor
- Emperors cannot lose their rank
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Stormlord - Thunderlord - Dragonlord - High King
==================================================
- Even though this branch is at the same location as the Demonlord-
Shadowlord-Battlelord-Emperor branch, it is considered a higher rank and
is the seventh and highest level of Kumite
- To advance here, you must defeat 10 same ranked opponents consecutively.
However, you lose a rank if you have 2 consecutive losses to a Demonlord,
Shadowlord, Battlelord, Stormlord, Thunderlord, or Dragonlord
- Once you reach Dragonlord, you must defeat 20 same ranked opponents
consecutively to advance to High King
- High Kings cannot lose their rank

ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ
One of the coolest new features in Virtua Fighter 4 is the training of
an AI Fighter. An AI Fighter is an entire seperate file from Player Files,
and is controlled by the computer during fights. However, YOU train the
fighter to learn the moves and fight the way you want him to. You can teach
the AI Fighter three different ways: through Sparring, Replays, or taking
him through Arcade or Kumite mode. Below is a step-by-step guide you might
want to follow for your AI Fighter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
================================================
Creating An Emperor: The AI Fighter Tutorial
================================================
-----------------------------
1. Create A New AI Fighter
-----------------------------
The first step in creating an AI fighter is, well, creating one. Go to
Data Files and select AI File. You get to pick the character your AI Fighter
is going to be, and his/her name. If this is your first time, I suggest
picking someone who:
a.) Have played with before and know moderately well
b.) Doesn't have auto-parries, such as Jacky or Vanessa
c.) Someone with tons of different stances, like Lei-Fei
d.) NOT Shun-Di or Kage Maru
After giving your AI Fighter a spiffy name and saving him to your
memory card, its time to begin what you'll be doing with your AI fighter for
a long time to come.
-------------
2. Sparring
-------------
Sparring is the single most important thing about training an AI
Fighter. Without sufficient sparring time, the Dans in Kumite will crush you
completely, without mercy. The first time you spar, go through the move
list, so the AI learns all the moves he/she can. Some moves may be too
advanced for your trainee, represented by a question mark in the AI HUD near
the bottom of your screen. If this shows up, just ignore it and keep on
working through the moves. You'll teach these again when you go through the
move list a fourth or fifth time. For now, just show your AI all the basic
moves you can.
Teaching Reversals and Parries
--------------------------------
Teaching reversals and parries depends a lot on if YOU can do them,
not the AI. I'm horrible at reversing, so my AI knows almost none. However,
if you can reverse and parry, here's how to teach it:
1.) First, learn what the reverse you're trying to teach reverses
Ex.) Akira's Gaimon Chouchu reverses elbows
2.) Use the move it reverses on the AI
Ex.) Use an elbow on your AI
3.) When your AI performs the move back, reverse it
Ex.) The AI uses an elbow, you use Gaimon Chouchu
4.) A Tech+ should show up in the AI HUD. If not, try again
You should spar with your AI Fighter for about 45 minutes or so. If he
knows all but the most advanced moves, and can perform them well, then
he's ready for his first test run.
-----------------
3. Arcade Mode
-----------------
While many people complain about how sparse Arcade Mode is, I see it as
a practice mode for Kumite, where you won't lose rank if you lose bouts.
During Arcade Mode and Kumite Mode also, you can "coach" your AI fighter
from the sidelines, using the X and O buttons. When your AI fighter does
something you like, such as a massive combo or reverses a move, press O so
the fighter knows this is a good thing to do. If he does something you don't
like, such as a move he does repeatedly that leaves him open to throws, hit
the X button so he knows this is bad.
A word of caution about coaching however. When you press X or O, the
AI will look towards you, leaving him/her open for attack. Your best bet
is to only coach when the opponent won't have sufficient time to
counterattack while your AI fighter's head is turned.
How did he/she do? Not too good at all? Amazing? Regardless of his/her
performance, its back to Sparring again.
----------------------
4. Advanced Sparring
----------------------
Now its time to show your AI some moves he wasn't capable of before,
shown by the ? mark in the AI HUD. Use some 3 and 4-hit combos on him, and
see if he can learn them. If you can't make up any of your own, use the Move
List combos or the combos found in Training -> Trial under Mid-air Combos.
If no question mark appears, then he'll start to use these combos. However,
some characters cannot learn certain moves until they reach a certain level
of Kumite. A good example is Akira's Doppu Choushitsu, or his knee attack.
AI fighters cannot learn that until 3rd Dan. If a question mark is still
appearing in the HUD, this is probably the reason. Now, to repeat some
steps.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 until:
- Your AI fighter gets up to or defeats Dural
- He is using all the combos you taught him effectively
- He uses all the defensive moves, such as evading and fall recoveries
Once your fighter has done at least 2 of the 3 options, then its time to
think about Kumite Mode, the true test of your coaching ability.
----------------
5. Kumite Mode
----------------
Well, well, this is the big time now...or at least you think. If you
followed all the steps above, then your AI should be able to handle the Kyus
pretty easily. However, the Dans is where it gets scary. Dans will rip you
up if you don't teach him one thing: evading effectively. When you spar,
start to evade his attacks a whole lot more, and use the guard-evade also,
and guard-evade-throw escape if you can pull it off consistently. These
skills will help him get through the Dans with the least amount of stress
for you and your fighter.
- Repeat steps 4 and 5 until your AI hopefully reaches Emperor or High
King
- Fun stuff to do with your AI:
- Let him destroy your friends
- Try to beat him yourself when he reaches a high level
- Have AI fights with your friends
- Repeat step 1 and start all over again for a new challenge
GOOD LUCK
Q: I just finished Arcade mode with . Where is
the ending?
A: Sadly, there are no endings for any character in Virtua Fighter 4. The
only ending you'll receive are the credits :(
____________________________________________________________________________
Q: How do I unlock Dural?
A: You must first reach Emperor or High King with a character in Kumite.
Once you are there, you might encounter Dural. If you defeat her, you
unlock her. However, she has no known movelists, so all her combos have
to be discovered by you.
____________________________________________________________________________
Q: What are 'Orb Items', and how do I get them?
A: To get Orb Items, you must first reach Conqueror rank in Kumite. When you
face some High Kings, they will have a colored orb underneath their
lifebar. There are 7 different orb colors. Once you have all seven, you
receive that item. You can also win Orb Items from someone else if you
are at least 2nd Dan.
____________________________________________________________________________
Q: How do I do Akira's ****** knee?!!!!
A: Akira's knee will definetly go down as one of the hardest moves to use in
a fighting game ever. Basically, you have to hold down k+g, and release g
after one frame. However, there are 60 frames in a SECOND. So you have to
release g after one-sixtieth of a second. Easy, no? The best method of
using his knee is to scrape or flick g while holding k. Even then, there
is no guarentee that you will pull it off. However, if his knee was easy,
he could probably float you forever :)
