This game has the steepest learning curve I've ever faced in a
fighting game. The first week I owned this game, I couldn't get past
Vanessa in Arcade, Kumite was next to impossible, and Training didn't seem
to help. Frustrated beyond belief, I just threw everything I ever learned
from Street Fighter and Soul Caliber out the window, and began Training
with just one character, Jacky. Suddenly, it clicked. I realized how
balanced the gameplay was. Everything can be countered, and every move has
both strength and weakness. I finally realized that this game stands alone
among all fighting games, as perhaps the best fighter ever. So to everyone
reading this, and if you're still frustrated, don't give up hope! It will
come in time, and you'll love this game when it does.
For everyone else, this FAQ will hopefully help you better understand
the gameplay and learn some things you didn't know before. Hopefully, my FAQ
can help you master the greatest fighting game ever made.

This game is extremely different from most other fighters, 3D or
otherwise. It is not a button masher at all, so if you are one, you won't
want to play this game. It also doesn't have a lot of flashy combos and cool
special attacks. It is a fighting game, between semi-normal people
practicing real fighting styles. I suggest forgetting everything you ever
know about fighting games, and start over from scratch.
The fighting system boiled down to its simplest form is based on a
Rock-Paper-Scissors game: Guard beats Strike, Throw beats Guard, and Strike
beats Throw. A person who rushes forwards and continually attacks will not
win, and neither will a person who continually guard. A balance must be
struck between the three skills, along with many other such as evade and
countering.
The game is similar to a sport known as fencing, in which two people
fight each other with swords. The two opponents switch off as attacker and
defender, and who has the advantage or disadvantage. The person who is
attacking has the advantage, and the person who is defending has the
disadvantage. When the attacker misses an attack, stands still, is parried
or counterattacked, or is evaded, he loses the advantage. He is now at a
disadvantage, since now he acts as a defender. Thus, the fight goes back
and forth, much like a tug-of-war.
For the person just beginning the game, I suggest you use the
characters labeled Beginner. They really are the easiest to use, and are
suitable for people making the transition from another fighting game to
Virtua Fighter. My personal choices would either be Pai Chan or Jacky
Bryant, as they have the easiest combos to learn and are well balanced. As
you think you understand the game more, try Lei Fei or Lau Chan, as they
are also easy to use. However, feel free to experiment, because it's your
game, not mine. Hopefully, these tips and those below help you better
understand and play this game.

(Taken from the manual to Virtua Fighter 4)
In the end, it was Kage-Maru who won the Third World Fighting
Tournament. After it ended, he defeated a new model of Dural who appeared
before him. Kage-Maru finally obtained the new item type required to save
his mother, Tsuki-Kage. However, Tsuki-Kage actually got worse,
transforming into Dural further when the item was used. Ultimately, she
turned into Dural completely and "J6" acquired her once more. With Dural
again within their grasp, "J6" started to research how they could mass-
produce Dural. During their research, "J6" discovered that Tsuki-Kage had
remained incomplete for too long which explained her lack of abilities
somewhat.
"J6" started to look for a new target eligible enough to become a new
(complete) Dural. They decided upon "Sarah Bryant". Plans were made so to
acquire her and the Fourth World Fighting Tournament was organized.
With many hidden agendas and suspicious machinations going on, the
Tournament is now ready to begin.

Before you can start seriously playing Virtua Fighter 4, you have to
have mastered the basics of guarding, evading, and throwing. Without
mastery of these skills, even the weakest of CPU opponents will bring you
to your knees. You can practice these necesssary skills by accessing the
Trial option in the Training menu. It will run through all the things you
should learn before attempting to play the game. Here is a listing of these
skills:

Your character will run forward. If you release the directional button,
your character will stop running. This skill is useful for rushing your
opponent, and then releasing a combo. However, it can be difficult to make a
distance between you and your opponent long enough for your character to
break out in a run.

Your character will dash forward or backwards for a short distance when
you use this skill. It can be useful for combos or avoiding an attack.
However, using it as an evasion maneuver doesn't allow you to counterattack,
so the normal Dash is the more used skill.

Your character will crouch down and dash either forwards or backwards.
This move has similar use to the normal Dash/Back Dash, but can be used to
start a combo low instead of high or medium, and to avoid some jumping
attacks.

Your character will jump into the air. Every character has two jumping
attacks, except for Vanessa, and this move also helps you avoid low hits.
However, it just leaves you up in the air for an easy high hit. Be careful
when you use this move.

Your character will walk around the arena. Useful for positioning
yourself far away from the opponent, or move around the back of him.
However, it is quite slow, and the enemy automatically faces you unless he's
in the process of hitting nothing but air. I rarely use this, unless I want
to catch my breath a bit and analyze my opponents.

A Throw is one of the three basic maneuvers of the game. It beats
guarding but loses to striking. You can only Throw your opponent if he is
guarding or standing still. If he is striking or crouching, you cannot
Throw your opponent. A Throw does moderate damage alone, but every character
has special Throw moves that multiply the damage. Use the Throw carefully
though, as it is counterable and escapable.

A Throw Escape is used to escape a Throw before it is executed. When
you see your opponent reaching for you after a guaranteed Throw move, hit
P + G to escape the Throw. If your opponent is using a special Throw, you
have to hit the direction he used to get the special Throw along with P + G.

When your opponent has been knocked to the ground, you can perform a
Down Attack for extra damage. Most characters have special Down Attacks.
These tend to not be so useful against the CPU, as they get up rather
quickly from a fall. However, if you connect, it gives your character the
advantage.

When you are about to hit the ground, use Recovery to prevent your
opponent from using a Down Attack. Hit this button along with Back, Down,
or Up. Back lets you get up quickly, but leaves you open for another attack,
while Up and Down let you roll and face the enemy.

When your character is on the ground, use this to get back up again. I
prefer using the Guard form as it helps prevents further attacks by your
opponent while getting up.

When your character is on the ground, use this attack to rise from the
ground with an attack. If you miss the Recovery, or want to regain the
advantage, use this attack instead of just getting back up. However, an
experienced opponent will just evade and counterattack, so I don't suggest
using it too much.

Evading an attack is very difficult to do in the heat of battle, but
is the most useful basic skill you can learn. By tapping U or D when an
opponent is in his motion to strike you, you avoid the blow, and can then
counterattack or throw your opponent. Some people have trouble evading by
just tapping once, but it comes in time. Double-tap if you're really
frustrated. Timing is the key however, and it varies from character to
character to move to move. Eventually, it will come naturally, but practice,
practice, practice.

After you evade, you can then perform an Evade Attack in the middle
of the Evade. Evade attacks usually hit from the side of the opponent, and
do moderate damage. It's a good counterattack with little to no bad
points, except you use the attack instead of a more damaging combo.

With this move, you counterattack your opponent. Most characters have a
list of special Reversals that they can do. However, the timing is extremely
hard to get down. I suggest using Reversals against characters you know well
so you can better use your Reversals.

Some characters have deflecting moves, which do no damage to your
opponent, but instead stagger them. This leaves them open for a combo of
your own making. Deflecting attacks also cover more of the body than
reversals, and are easier to use. However, the downfall is that only certain
characters have them. If you have some, learn to use them.

Some characters have moves that can be charged. If a move can be
charged, then the longer you hold down the last command, the more damage
it does. Charged moves leave you open for an attack, so I suggest using
them while a person is staggered or getting up.

Name - Name of the move
Command - The buttons you need to press to perform the move
Notes - Any special note about the move
Damage - The amount of damage a move does. For each separate hit of the
move, the damage done is listed. The total damage done is listed
after that. For example...
22+22 44, the move has two hits that do 22 damage each hit, and if
the move is done completely without interruption, the total damage
is 44. If a move has a range of damage, such as when a move can be
charged, it is listed with its minimum damage and maximum damage.
So if a charged move can do anywhere from 20 to 40 damage, then it
will be listed as 20-40.
Hit Order - The height of the hit for each hit in an attack. So if a special
move has two hits, and the first attack hits low and the second
one hits mid-level, it will be listed as L M. The Hit Order is
listed in the same order as the Damage, so you can see how much
damage each hit does and at what level. A T means the move has a
throw in it.
Reverses - Tells you what attack you reverse when you use this move.

Akira failed to win the Third World Fighting Tournament. After he
returned home to Japan and told his grandfather about his loss, he isolated
himself in a mountainside retreat to train rigorously to atone for his lack
of ability. Whilst questioning himself," What is true strength?" Akira was
surprised to discover a number of devastating new moves. As he continued to
improve his style, Hakkyoku-Ken, Akira felt his soul strengthening, and
immediately resolved to fight in the tournament once more to demonstrate his
improved skill.

Akira is not an easy fighter to use. All his intermediate and advanced
moves require time, practice, and patience to execute. His combos are almost
impossible for me to execute even once. However, in the right hands, Akira
is the best fighter in the game in terms of power, and extremely well
balanced. He doesn't have a ton of special moves, making it easier to master
moves rather than learning a large repertoire.

Pai Chan left the Third World Fighting Tournament after being defeated
by her father, Lau. Upon returning home, Pau realized that despite her loss,
her fighting skills closely matched those of her father. While training to
improve her Ensei-Ken, Pai learned that Lau had contracted an incurable
disease and yet still planned to complete in the fourth tournament.
Determined to prove herself a worthy successor to her father's legacy, Pai
plans to enter the tournament to defeat him.

Pai is the fastest fighter in the game. She can easily get out combos
before the opponent knows what hit him/her. She has easy-to-learn moves that
are great for beginners. However, her drawback is her attack power, which is
very weak. Some of her combos don't do as much damage as some character's
regular attacks. However, her speed makes her hard to hit. She requires lots
of speed, and someone who can use the Evade skill effectively.
