|Introduction|
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to my second ever FAQ! I recently have gotten into the wonderful world
of basketball, thanks to my mother who saw the sweet deal ($20) for this game
and so picked it up for me for Christmas (thanks Mom!). The fast paced action
really drew me in, and that is how it helped me get over the lack of hockey
this season. I actually tried to play the sport myself, but as a complete nerd
I failed miserably. Oh well, sports were never my strong point (except for
hockey).

|Basketball rules|
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are several rules and fouls in basketball and each of them will be
addressed here.
Double Dribble
--------------
This foul occurs when you bounce the ball, grab ahold of it,
and bounce it again, and grab ahold of it again. It's basically bounce, grab,
bounce, grab (I'm not 100% sure on this rule so tell me if it's a bit off).
Reach In
--------
When the opposing player is just holding the ball and you grab for it then.
In ESPN NBA 2K5, this rule randomly comes up even when they're dribbling.
Traveling
----------
When you move without dribbling the ball. For example, you can hop-step once,
but you can't do it twice.
Charge
------
When the player is overly agressive and runs into the defending player,
knocking him down.
Blocking foul
-------------
Not entirely sure on this one, but I've seen a failed "take charge" where the
defending player was called for this. I don't see it happen too often, just
few times per game.
Shooting foul
-------------
When the defender makes too much contact with the person shooting the ball.
Loose Ball Foul
---------------
When a person goes after the rebound, pushing someone else out of the way to
get there.
Goaltending
-----------
When a ball is over the net, goaltending is called and two points are counted.
Backcourt Violation
-------------------
When a player crosses the middle line to the opposing side, and the crossing
back into the defending side.
Out-of-bounds
-------------
When a player crosses the boundary line.
Shotclock Violation
-------------------
Taking longer than 24 seconds to get the shoot the ball. If the shot clock goes
off while the ball was already shot and it's an airball, it's still a violation
but if it hits the rim, it isn't.
Time-out Violation
------------------
When a time-out is called when there are none remaining.
5 Sec Inbound
-------------
When a person takes longer than five seconds to throw the ball inbounds.
3 in the Key
------------
When three seconds is spent in that area near the net.

How to play offense
:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:
Playing offense in this game is a lot harder than it looks, especially on the
higher difficulty settings. First, you need to know the basics. At the
beginning of each game and overtimes, there is a tip off which decides who gets
the ball during which quarters. To win this tip-off, hit the square button
repeatedly. It depends on the size of the player how many times you need to hit
it. Really tall players can get the ball easily, while shorter ones will have
a tougher time. The shortest players won't even stand a chance.
When moving down the court, you can decide your plays. Hit the L2 button and
decide which play you would prefer to choose. Each play is described in detail
in the menus in the game. Once you have a play set, if any at all, you need to
start passing the ball. While the X button is easier, hitting the R2 button is
a lot better because you can choose who you pass it to. Each button corresponds
to a different position on the court. Next is turbo. Press the R1 button to
use turbo, but use is sparingly because there is a limited amount of turbo
available. Using it in conjunction with the right analog stick makes the
IsoMotion moves more extreme, but it increases the chances of being called
for a charge. Doing it with the circle button causes the player to spin. Use
the IsoMotion moves to easily get past the defender. If you don't want to risk
getting called for the charge, then you must pass, pass, pass to get the open
shot.
Shooting here is quite difficult sometimes. Behind the three point arc (that
arc far away from the goal) is one of the most difficult. The player you are
using must have some kind of skill shooting the three point shot. Hold the
square button and release it at the top of the jump to give the optimum chance
of making it. Same thing with mid range shots, but those seem to be harder
to me because defenders are generally all over me. Closer in you start using
the lay-ups. Just press the square button and the player goes for one. If you
see you have no chance of making it, press it again in mid-air to change up
your shot. Finally, there are the dunks. Just press the square button as the
player approaches the net at a high speed to get a dunk. Keep in mind, however,
that there is not a 100% chance that you will make it and it could bounce out.
Then there are things like dishing off. In the middle of a shot, press the X
button to pass it to another player. Also, the fake shot. Just tap the shot
button and the player will attempt a fake shot to get any defending players
out of the way. Press the triangle button to do the hop step. It gets you
closer to the goal, but you can't move after doing it or you will be called
for travelling. Backing into the goal works well depending on the player's
strength. Keep in mind that you can get called for a foul if you back in for
too long. Free throwsare hard until you get used to them. Hold the right
and left analog sticks inward until they have the shape of the ball in the
middle, and when they ball moving up and down reaches the center, press
L1 to shoot, but keep in mind, there is a time limit on free throws
depending on your difficulty level.
:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:
How to play defense
:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:-:
Defense is much more different than offense. It can be harder or easier,
depending on your ability.
To keep the player from moving in, stay in front of them around the three
point line and they can't get past you. At this point, they will probably
attempt to use the IsoMotion moves in which case you should press the triangle
button, which is the take charge that, if successful, will knock you down and
the opposing player gets called for the charge and you get to get the ball. If
it fails, however, you get called for a blocking foul. The X button here just
switches players and you may use this often or not, whatever you want to do.
When covering an especially tough player, you may want to double team them.
Press the L1 button and that calls for another player to come up and cover the
opposing player, which may cause a turnover in your favor.
When the opposing player is dribbling, press the O button to attempt a steal.
If it succeeds, you get the ball if you can get to it. If it fails (or if the
player is holding the ball when you try this) you get called for the reach-in.
The square button is the block. It means that if a player is trying to shoot,
press this button to make the shot a little bit more difficult for him or
block it altogether. If the player is almost guranteed the shot, make as much
contact as you can with him to get the shooting foul which will make him have
to earn his points from the free throw line. Finally, if you are behind by
just a little and the time is running down in the game and the opponents have
the ball, press R3 which will cause the intentional foul and make them go to
the line. This is high risk because if they make it you're screwed, but if they
don't make it you have a chance to get those much-needed points to win the
game.
