---------------------------------------------------- ------POKEMON RED/BLUE FAQ-------------------------- ------Written by NickWhiz1 (NickWhiz1@aol.com)------ ------Version 2.1----------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Last Updated: November 17, 1999 OK, I know I'm being a little strict, but I will now accept teams in ANY format, as long as you have the Pokemon, their moves, and their experience level. Send them in! Remember, though, all submissions are bound to be edited to match the others already placed on here. Table of Contents Introduction/History Story Controls* Items Characters* FAQ Walkthrough Pokedex Ability List Codes/Tricks Killer Teams Copyright Credits In Conclusion *Not completed ---------------------------INTRODUCTION/HISTORY---------------------------- Version 2.1(11/17/99): Big update. First, I have a corrected description for the ability "Mimic" (thanks to Donnie Wells, dwells@ns.gemlink.com). Second, I have a corrected description for the ability "Psywave" (thanks to Nick C., ncorpuz34@freepcmail.com). Third, I have some new Game Genie codes (thanks to StUDio K13@aol.com). Fourth, I have begun to list the locations of the HMs and TMs in the item section. Fifth, I redid the item section by putting those nice === headers to divide the sections. Last, but not least, the next team of the week is in 2 days! Version 2.0(11/14/99): Many things. First, in my REAL life, I saw Pokemon: The First Movie yesterday, and it wasn't up to my expectations. Second, my family computer just had a new hard drive installed, so that's why I didn't update eariler. Now, about this FAQ. I was sent a Killer Team late on 11/12/99, so that person won the honors. He also informed me of the Game Genie codes on Game Sages, so those are up to. Who is this person? Anyone heard of Devin Morgan (DBM11085)? Thought so. Version 1.92(11/12/99): I've moved my sample Killer Team to the Archives (I also revised it, I switched Speed and Special around), and annouced the Team of the Week for November 12, 1999: No one! Oh well, send in your teams for the next Team of the Week: November 19, 1999! Oh yeah, I added a note at the top of the page, and updated my Request List. Version 1.91(11/5/99): Not much of an update, but I have added the Killer Teams section. Version 1.9: Game Shark codes have been added. Version 1.8: After having to redownload and reformat this, I have the latest version available, which includes the 100% Pokedex completion! Now all I need is some Game Shark/Genie codes and I'll be done. Look for my next FAQ to possibly be on another fun Game Boy game, Pokemon Pinball. Version 1.7: Anyone ever heard of a game called Bash the Rumors? It's fun to play, and Ash Ketchum1 has earned 1 point for bashing the Superstrength rumor. Go check it out. The FAQ section has undergone a MASSIVE change, now with more information and formatting. The In Conclusion section has also been updated. Version 1.6: Thanks to B00664, I now have initiated my Codes/Rumors section. Plus, yet another reformatting project, redoing the level headers in the Walkthrough. Version 1.51: Thanks to N64unlimited, I now have Gary's Blastoise's final moves. Mucho gracias! Oh yeah, the credits section and my request list have been updated. Version 1.5: The Pokedex has been updated, now with all info except TM/HM compatibility for Nidoking to Mewtwo. That will be finished soon. Every trainer strategy has also been revised, now with opponent Pokemon's moves! Oh yeah, check out my request list in the In Conclusion section. Version 1.4: The Pokedex is near complete, with entries for all 151 Pokemon, extra data coming soon. Mew's abilties are also added at the end of the Ability List section. Version 1.3: The Walkthrough is now 100% COMPLETE! The only main section that needs updating is the Pokedex section, which has been updated this version. After that, I'll work on the other sections I need to complete. Stay tuned for a complete version soon! Version 1.2: The Walkthrough has been updated, and I have revised the strategies for Gary (Nugget Bridge/Routes 24-25, S.S. Anne) and Misty. Also updated are the FAQ and In Conclusion sections. Version 1.1: The Pokemon Ability Lists are completed, plus I revised the Gary strategies for Route 22, Nugget Bridge, and S.S. Anne. Look for the Walkthrough and Pokedex to be continued next update. Version 1.0: The first e-mail I get about this FAQ will probably be "Why did you write this piece of junk?!". Well, sometimes you need to put your own $0.02 in for something, and in this case, it's Pokemon. BTW, this is my first FAQ written in my new FAQ format. Tell me what you think. Another thing, don't look for the accented E's here. They are a waste of time. There are many incomplete sections here, this being the first version and all. The next version will be more complete, I promise. -----------------------------------STORY----------------------------------- You assume the role of a 10 year old named Ash, from Pallet Town, attempting to become the greatest Pokemon trainer in the world. Aided by a Pokemon expert, Prof. Oak, he travels around the world in search of the 150+ monsters. Apparently you've been sleeping since last August, before Pokemon turned into the most popluar thing since sliced bread. Pokemon are imaginary creatures with special powers. As the main characters, your job is to try to catch and train as many of them as possible. Since it's an RPG, strategy plays a key role in this game. =========================================================================== Q: How do I catch Pokemon? =========================================================================== A: First off, you need to go to a Pokemon Mart and buy some Poke/Great/Ultra Balls. Then, step into a grass patch and walk around until you go into battle. To catch a Pokemon, you need to lower its HP to about 1/4 of their max. When they are low enough, throw a ball. With luck, you'll catch it. Stronger Pokemon command more powerful balls. =========================================================================== Q: I just caught a Pokemon. What's the next step? =========================================================================== A: Train it. Raise its Exp. Teach it new moves. With a properly trained Pokemon, you can use it to help you battle wild Pokemon and trainers. =========================================================================== Q: I'm short on cash. Where do I get some? =========================================================================== A: There are three ways. One, battle trainers. If you've defeated the Elite Four once, you can keep battling them for more money. Two, use Meowth's Pay Day attack to get a few dollars. Three, teach a Pokemon TM 16 so they can use Pay Day. Remember, if your Pokemon all faint, you lose 1/2 of your money... =========================================================================== Q: How do I get all three starters? =========================================================================== A: Well, here's one way: 1. Have one person start a new game, and the other have about 4-5 junky Pokemon that can be lost. 2. Have him/her choose Bulbasaur. 3. After getting the Pokedex from Oak, go to Viridian City and trade the Bulbasaur for a junky Pokemon. 4. Now, have that person start a new game, and follow the same steps for Bulbasaur again. 5. Follow the steps until the person with the junky Pokemon has two of each starter, except one of them, which will be the one the person that's starting new games will pick. 6. After that, have the person with the doubles of starters trade the other person the other two starters.I hope that helps. =========================================================================== Q: What's the difference between the Red and Blue versions? =========================================================================== A: Both games are basically the same, except the rarity of some Pokemon is changed and some Pokemon you can't catch at all. Here's a list of Pokemon exclusive to each version, and their counterparts: Red: Blue: Ekans Sandshrew Arbok Sandslash Mankey Meowth Primeape Persian Oddish Bellsprout Gloom Weepinbell Vileplume Victreebel Growlithe Vulpix Arcanine Ninetales Scyther Pinsir Electabuzz Magmar =========================================================================== Q: My Pokemon is at L100. Why hasn't it evolved? =========================================================================== A: Not all Pokemon evolve from levels. In some cases, you will need to use an elemental stone or even trade to another cartridge. Some Pokemon don't even evolve. =========================================================================== Q: What are the prices for items in each Pokemon Mart? =========================================================================== A: VIRIDIAN CITY __________________ |Poke Ball |$200| |Antidote |$100| |Paralyze Heal|$200| |Burn Heal |$250| PEWTER CITY __________________ |Poke Ball |$200| |Potion |$300| |Escape Rope |$550| |Antidote |$100| |Burn Heal |$250| |Awakening |$200| |Paralyze Heal|$200| CERULEAN CITY __________________ |Poke Ball |$200| |Potion |$300| |Repel |$350| |Antidote |$100| |Burn Heal |$250| |Awakening |$200| |Paralyze Heal|$200| VERMILION CITY __________________ |Poke Ball |$200| |Super Potion |$700| |Ice Heal |$250| |Awakening |$200| |Paralyze Heal|$200| |Repel |$350| LAVENDER TOWN ___________________ |Great Ball | $600| |Super Potion | $700| |Revive |$1500| |Escape Rope | $550| |Super Repel | $500| |Antidote | $100| |Burn Heal | $250| |Ice Heal | $250| |Paralyze Heal| $200| CELADON CITY 2nd Floor _________________________ |Great Ball | $600| |Super Potion | $700| |Revive |$1500| |Super Repel | $500| |Antidote | $100| |Burn Heal | $250| |Ice Heal | $250| |Awakening | $200| |Paralyze Heal | $200| |TM 32 (Double Team)|$1000| |TM 33 (Reflect) |$1000| |TM 02 (Razor Wind) |$2000| |TM 07 (Horn Drill) |$2000| |TM 37 (Egg Bomb) |$2000| |TM 01 (Mega Punch) |$3000| |TM 05 (Mega Kick) |$3000| |TM 09 (Take Down) |$3000| |TM 17 (Submission) |$3000| 4th Floor ___________________ |Poke Doll |$1000| |Fire Stone |$2100| |Thunder Stone|$2100| |Water Stone |$2100| |Leaf Stone |$2100| 5th Floor _________________ |X Accuracy | $950| |Guard Spec.| $700| |Dire Hit | $650| |X Attack | $350| |X Defend | $350| |X Speed | $350| |X Special | $350| |HP Up |$9800| |Protein |$9800| |Iron |$9800| |Carbos |$9800| |Calcium |$9800| Vending Machines ________________ |Fresh Water|$200| |Soda Pop |$300| |Lemonade |$350| SAFFRON CITY __________________ |Great Ball | $600| |Hyper Potion|$1500| |Max Repel | $700| |Escape Rope | $550| |Full Heal | $600| |Revive |$1500| FUSCHIA CITY __________________ |Ultra Ball |$1200| |Great Ball | $600| |Super Potion| $700| |Revive |$1500| |Full Heal | $600| |Super Repel | $500| CINNABAR ISLAND __________________ |Ultra Ball |$1200| |Great Ball | $600| |Hyper Potion|$1500| |Max Repel | $700| |Escape Rope | $550| |Full Heal | $600| |Revive |$1500| INDIGO PLATEAU __________________ |Ultra Ball |$1200| |Great Ball | $600| |Full Restore|$3000| |Max Potion |$2500| |Full Heal | $600| |Revive |$1500| |Max Repel | $700| =========================================================================== Q: I have an Abra/Magikarp, and I need to raise it. How? =========================================================================== A: There are many ways to do so, including: 1. Use the Item Multiplier trick to multiply Rare Candies (see Codes/Tricks). 2. Teach Abra a TM or too (Magikarp can't learn any). 3. Put the Abra/Magikarp in front, then bring them back in the middle of a battle. They will earn part of the EXP. 4. Keep them in the Pokemon Day Care (Route 5). Every step you take earns you one EXP point. Hopefully, you'll figure a way out. =========================================================================== Q: Where do I fish for wild water Pokemon? =========================================================================== A: Well, here's a list: #054 Psyduck: Cerulean City/Gym, Safari Zone, Routes 4,24,25, #060 Poliwag: Pallet Town, Viridian City, Route 22 #061 Poliwhirl: Celadon City, Route 10 #072 Tentacool: Pallet Town, Viridian City, Routes 12,13,17,18 #079 Slowpoke: Celadon City, Safari Zone, Route 10 #080 Slowbro: Unknown Dungeon, Route 23 #090 Shellder: Vermilion City, Cinnabar Island, Seafoam Island, Routes 6,11,19,20,21 #098 Krabby: Cerulean City/Gym, Vermilion City, Fuschia City, Safari Zone, Routes 4,6,11,12,13,17,18,24,25 #099 Kingler: Unknown Dungeon, Route 23 #116 Horsea: Cinnabar Island, Seafoam Island, Routes 19,20,21 #117 Seadra: Unknown Dungeon, Route 23 #118 Goldeen: Cerulean City/Gym, Fuschia City, Cinnabar Island, Seafoam Island, Routes 12,13,17,18,19,20,21,22 #119 Seaking: Fuschia City, Unknown Dungeon, Route 23 #120 Staryu: Cinnabar Island, Seafoam Island, Routes 19,20,21 #129 Magikarp: Anywhere (with Old Rod) #147 Dratini: Safari Zone --------------------------------WALKTHROUGH-------------------------------- NOTE: For the Wild Pokemon listings, that only counts for Pokemon you can find on land/swimming, not ones you can fish for. The fishing locations are in the FAQ section. After you start a new game and have set the names of you and your rival, you'll appear in... =========================================================================== PALLET TOWN =========================================================================== Upon starting in Pallet Town, you will be in your bedroom. Go to your PC, and select Withdraw Item. Select Potion, take it out, then go downstairs and outside. The only way you can go for now is north, so head up towards Route 1. Prof. Oak will then stop you, then take you into his lab. He will then give you a choice on which Pokemon you wish to start out with. If you want the best Pokemon for the beginning of the game, pick Bulbasaur. If you want the best overall Pokemon, pick Squirtle. If you want a challenge, pick Charmander. Upon choosing your Pokemon, Gary will choose his, obviously picking the one with the elemental advantage. As you try to walk out, Gary will challenge you... *************************************************************************** TRAINER: Gary POKEMON: *He Chose Bulbasaur* L5 Bulbasaur- Tackle, Growl *He Chose Charmander* L5 Charmander- Scratch, Growl *He Chose Squirtle* L5 Squirtle- Tackle, Tail Whip STRATEGY: For the first battle, this is almost hard. It may be, if you forgot about your Potion. The trick is to keep using Scratch/Tackle, and heal when your HP gets about 5 or below (or the game beeps at you). Don't worry about the opponent's Growl/Tail Whip, just keep pounding them. BASICALLY: You have only your starter, so that's it. *************************************************************************** After battling Gary, it's time to FINALLY head north to... =========================================================================== ROUTE 1 =========================================================================== Wild Pokemon: #016 Pidgey #019 Rattata Items: Potion Have your Pokemon healed fully before you enter Route 1. The Pokemon you will face are at Levels 2-4, so you shouldn't have much of a problem getting by them. Now would be a good time to begin raising your Pokemon's levels, as you will be needing it soon. Other than that, talk to the guy near the sign for a Potion, then go north to... =========================================================================== VIRIDIAN CITY =========================================================================== Items: Oak's Parcel The first major town, you can't do a lot here. The passage north to Route 2 is blocked, the gum is closed, Route 22 to the west leads to Gary, and you still don't have a Pokedex. So, go to the Pokemon Center if your Pokemon needs to be healed, then go to the Pokemon Mart. The clerk there will give you Oak's Parcel. Now, go south to... =========================================================================== PALLET TOWN =========================================================================== Items: Pokedex Town Map Now that you have Oak's Parcel, go to Prof. Oak's lab. Walk up and give him the parcel. Then Gary will walk in. Oak will then tell you about his dream to have a catalog of all the Pokemon in the world. He will give you the Pokedex, then you can go, when he's done. Before leaving, go into Gary's house and talk to his sister to get a Town Map. Now, head north, again, to... =========================================================================== VIRIDIAN CITY =========================================================================== First thing, go into the Pokemon Center and buy some Poke Balls (finally!). Now, if you need to, go south to Route 1 to catch a Pidgey or Rattata, or you can just wait until Route 2. This next area is optional, but if you want, go to... =========================================================================== ROUTE 22 =========================================================================== Wild Pokemon: #019 Rattata #021 Spearow #029 Nidoran F #032 Nidoran M Go west to the grass patch to find some Nidoran and maybe a Spearow. If your Pokemon is at a high enough level, go up past the patch, then west to run into... *************************************************************************** TRAINER: Gary POKEMON: *He Chose Bulbasaur* L9 Pidgey- Gust, Sand-Attack L8 Bulbasaur- Tackle, Growl, Leech Seed *He Chose Charmander* L9 Pidgey- Gust, Sand-Attack L8 Charmander- Scratch, Growl *He Chose Squirtle* L9 Pidgey- Gust, Sand-Attack L8 Squirtle- Tackle, Tail Whip, Bubble STRATEGY: No matter who you/he picked, you should go into the Viridian Forest (further down) and pick up a Pikachu. Build it to about L8, then bring it here. Pidgey will fall to 2 Thundershocks from Pika. As for his starter, use Spearow on Bulbasaur, Bulbasaur (Tackle/Leech Seed) on Charmander, and Pikachu on Squirtle. BASICALLY: Have a Pikachu, and whoever else depending on who he picked. *************************************************************************** After you've beaten Gary, and you've gotten all the Pokemon you can, go back east to...
