THE MAP AND SUB-SCREEN

The Map Screen:

The map screen allows you to move around and find people to duel
so you can increase your card collection and gain duel points.
It also keeps track of your wins and losses as well as showing
where the tournaments are when they come up.

The map screen depicts 14 areas of the city. Below is a VERY rough
map of it (I'm quite new to ASCII art, so please bear with me here):

Keep track of what region has what number. It will be useful to
you later.

You start the game at region 12 and have the option of moving to
adjacent regions (in this case, regions 2, 13, 4, and 11). You will
also notice certain icons inside each region. These are either duels
or just friendly banter with the citizens. You will also have little
windows appearing that show what will happen when you select its
corresponding icon. A little yellow people icon means that no duel
will take place there (with an exception, see The Ghouls at Large!
for more info. A red circle with a white star in it means a duel will
take place there. Look at its corresponding window to see who will be
your opponent. If the window shows green static, that means you haven't
challenged that character yet (you'll find out who you are up against
when you challenge them). Pushing the accept button over the region you
want to explore will bring up a pop-up window with the details of the
icon you move your pointer over. With different opponents, you will see
how many wins and losses you have with them. If you are lucky, you will
see a little card icon appear in a region at times. These are tournaments
(see the Tournaments & Events section for more info). Each action you
take on the map screen (duels, talk, etc.) makes a day go by on the
upper-right corner of the screen. Different events may occur on different
days. Also, if you pick the people icon in certain areas, you might be
lucky enough to find a hidden magazine and get some free cards. And
that's pretty much how the Map Screen works. Moving along now...

The Sub-Menu:

This screen can be accessed by pressing the R button while on the map
screen. The purpose of this screen is to keep track of your cards,
enter passnumbers to get new cards, trade with other players (DM5 &
DM6 only), duel with friends if you have a cable link, see how many
Duel Points (DP) you have, and a locked option allowing you to turn
off the restrictions. The large icon in the bottom-left corner of
the screen that has some Japanese text over it marks the current
status of card restrictions. Right now, it's lit up, meaning that the
restrictions are currently active. To turn them off, you need to complete
a certain event (see Card Limit Tournament section). Looking at icons from
left to right, here is an explanation of each one:

Deck & Bag:
------------------------

This icon leads to a screen where you can manage the cards in your Deck
and Side-Deck, as well as look at what cards you have in your Bag. As
soon as you enter this screen, you will be looking at the contents of
your Bag. On the bottom of the screen, you will see a cursor over a
suitcase icon (showing that you are currently looking through your Bag).
Pressing the L & R buttons moves the cursor so you may look through your
Deck and Side-Deck. On the far right, it shows the grand total of all
the cards you own (only viewable while looking through your bag). The
numbers you see near the Bag icon at the bottom of the screen while looking
at your cards is the quantity of the particular card you are viewing. If
you look at your Deck, you can see how many total cards you put into your
Deck as well as how many of each card. On the bottom-right, it shows how
many cards are in your Main Deck (the top number) and the cards you have
in your Fusion Deck (the bottom number, the Yugo Deck). On the Side-Deck,
You will see how many monster cards you have there as well as other cards.

Pressing the accept button will bring up a menu at the top of the screen.
From left to right:

1.) (Magnifying Glass) Get a closer look at a card.
2.) (Suitcase) Move a card to your Bag.
3.) (Deck Box) Move a card to your Deck.
4.) (Pile of Cards) Move a card to your Side-Deck.
5.) (Arrow Circle) Organize cards in the order of your choice.
6.) (Question Mark) Look at how many of each type of card you have, as
well as look at what percentage of the whole it makes up.
7.) (End) Leave the Deck & Bag screen and return to your Sub-Screen.

Here's what the Organize screen says:

Look at all Cards

Look at Normal Monsters only Look at Magic Cards only (by Card No.)

Look at Effect Monsters only Look at Trap Cards only (by Card No.)

Look at Fusion Monsters only Look at Ritual Monsters only

Choosing any option other than the Magic/Trap Card option brings up
this:

Column 1:
Organize by Card No.

Organize by Attack Power (high to low)

Organize by Defense Power (high to low)

Column 2:
Organize by Monster Type (in this order: Dragon, Zombie, Demon, Fire,
Sea Serpent, Rock, Machine, Fish, Dinosaur, Insect, Beast, Beast-Warrior,
Plant, Water, Warrior, Bird, Angel, Magician, Lightning, Reptile)

Organize by Element (in this order: Light, Dark, Water, Fire, Earth,
Wind)

Organize by Power Level (high to low)

NOTE: If you choose all cards, Magic/Trap Cards will be below the
Monster Cards, sorted numerically.

As you look at each card, this is what you'll see:

             Card No. Name
Card Type Element/Type Attack/Defense Power Level

Duel Assist:
------------------------

This icon is for trading cards and gaining new cards via a passnumber.

Trade:

To DM 5: Trade cards with a Duel Monsters 5 player.

To DM 6: Trade cards with another Duel Monsters 6 player.

In either case, a new screen will appear with two choices and a grid-like
screen next to it. The top option takes you to your Deck & Bag screen.
Pick the card you wish to trade (you have access to the organize and
view commands on the top menu) and pick the far right option on the top
menu. The selected card will appear on the previous screen in the grid
screen area. The bottom option is the trade button, used to send the
chosen card to the other player.

8 Pass:

Cancel: Moves the highlighted option to "8 Pass."

OK: You can only pick this option if you have at least 500 Duel Points.
You pay 500 Duel Points to enter the passnumber screen once. You will
not get your points back if you enter a bad passnumber or leave the
passnumber screen, so make sure you know what you're doing. Also keep
in mind that you can use a card's passnumber to get only one copy of
that card. If you try entering the same number with the hopes of
getting an extra copy of the card, you will get a "Used" message and
you will be booted out of the passnumber screen. You will have then
foolishly lost 500 precious Duel Points.

Cable Duel:
------------------------

Duel another person via link cable. Entering this option will take
you to the Rock/Paper/Scissors game and then to the game itself. I
have never used this option, so I do not know if you can win or lose
Duel Points through this.

Option:
------------------------

The only thing here is:

Card Limit: You cannot even select this until you complete the Card
Limit Tournament event. See the appropriate info in the Tournaments
and Events section. This option turns off the card restrictions, so
you can have up to three of any of the cards on the Restrictions List.
(You are still not allowed to use cards 1106-1111 as they are just
collectables.)

Duel Points (DP):
------------------------

The meter at the bottom of the screen shows how many Duel Points you
currently have. Duel Points are used to gain new cards via the passnumber
screen. You can win and lose DP depending on the outcome of a duel or
match. Here's the DP win/loss table:

                        Win Lose
                     ---------- ----------
Normal Duel + 50 DP - 30 DP

Tournament Match + 300 DP - 50 DP
