5. Walkthrough
==============
The "meat" of my guide. The walkthrough. Before this was VERY bad, not covering
the main points in the game and split into short sentances. I'm making this A
LOT better, and adding making it look a lot better as well.

===============================================================================
5.1 From the Lab to Rustboro
============================
Objecitves:
-----------
- Learn the controls of the game
- Get your first Pokemon & PokeDex
- Meet your rival, father and Wally
- Meet Team Aqua
- Travel through Petalburg Woods
- Gain your first Hoenn Badge

Things not covered:
-------------------
- How to gain the alternate Wallpapers in Rustboro

To start with, you've probably turned on your Gameboy Advance (or DS if your
being "cool") and have skipped through the extremely cool introduction with
Rayquaza showing off his stuff and random Pokemon running along. You've started
your new game and are looking at Professor Birch, looking at what he is saying.

He'll ask you to if you want to be a ================TOP TIP=================
female or a male. Choose what you | If in Japanese, press the top right |
want, it doesn't matter that much | button twice to gett English letters |
Once that all important decision has |Its now easier to tell when people are|
been made, he'll ask you to enter | talking about you |
your name. Enter what you wish to ========================================
call your character.

You'll then be minimsed, and sent into the Pokemon world... and WOW, your in
a moving truck

=================
|Littleroot Town|
=================
When theres light at the right of the screen, the truck has stopped moving and
now your able to move. Step out of the truck and your mother will usher you
inside.

If you've played Pokemon games before, then you should be comfortable with how
you sort out Pokemon and how to move through the menu's. If not, I would
consult my guide about controls. It will also tell you what your objectives
are in the Pokemon world.

Look around and you'll see Vigroth moving furniture into your new house. Your
mother will send you upstairs to set your clock. Later on in the game when you
get doll's, your able to arrange them in here.

Setting up your clock should be quite ================TOP TIP=================
easy. Just turn the hands until it | Go to the PC and your able to get a |
shows the correct time in the real | potion off the computer! This will |
world. Time isn't used a lot in the | come in useful |
game, but is still something ========================================
important.

Your mother will come up, and talk to you now. Go downstairs and she'll usher
you to the TV to see your father on it. It seems your father is famous for
some reason... guess we'll find out later though.

If you chose to be Brendan, then your house will be on the left. If you chose
to be may, it will be on the right. Once out of your house, go to the one that
you didn't come from.

Go upstairs past their parent (Isn't it Birch's wife?) and then upstairs
 You won't find anyone up here, but press A at the PokeBall. This will
get your rivals attention and they will come rushing upstairs.

After some words, she'll tell you to go find her father on Route 101. Head
out of the house and North to find this route.

(beforehand, a small boy would have stopped you leaving Littleroot).

===========
|Route 101|
===========
You'll see Professor Birch being chased by a Zigzagoon... (it was a Poochyena
in Ruby and Saphire). He'll ask you to get a PokeBall from his bag, thus
allowing you to choose Pokemon...

Torchic (Fire)
- evolves into a powerful Fire/Fighting type
- good at competitive battling
- Not so hot against first few gyms

Mudkip (Water)
- evolves into a relitively powerful Water/Ground type
- competent at competitive battling (Mixed Sweeper)
- good HM slave
- Great against first Gym

Treecho (Grass)
- evolves into an extremely powerful Grass type
- incredible at competitive battling (Special Sweeper)
- Great against first gym

Personally I go with Treecko. I just think he's cooler, and learns Leaf Blade
when he evolves. He may not be a dual type like the others, but that can be a
hinderance. You can check out your choices in the PokeDex if you want to know
more about them.

When you've made your choice, you'll be thrown into a battle with the level 2
Zigzagoon. The battle is easy, just use the only attacking move your monsters
have (Pound for Treecko, Scratch for Torchic, Tackle for Mudkip). Zigzagoon
won't take long to defeat, and when you have killed him you'll be taken back
to Birch's lab.

=================
|Littleroot Town|
=================
In Birch's lab, he will ask you to go find his child (May/Brendan depending
upon if your a boy or a girl). He tells you she's on Route 103. Before you
leave he will give you the Pokemon you used to defeat the Zigzagoon. Wow, what
a nice guy!

You can give him a nickname now if you wish.

================TOP TIP===============     ==============TOP TIP===============
| If you need to heal your Pokemon | | If your playing in Japanese, then|
|just go and see your mother. It only| | name your Pokemon in English. |
| works until you reach Oldale | | This will help when people refer |
======================================     |              to it               |
                                           ====================================
Now leave Littleroot by going North.

===========
|Route 101|
===========
Your first route. You'll notice many things here that you'll see around the
game. The grass that you travel through has wild Pokemon in. The box here
============================== will tell you which Pokemon appear in the route
Pokemon |Level| % |Rarity | however, at the moment you can't catch any of
============================== them. If you want to know how to catch Pokemon,
Wurmple |2 - 3|50% |V.Comman| consult the area in my guide that tells you how.
Zigzagoon|2 - 3|45% |V.Comman|
Poochyena|2 - 3|5%  |Rare    | Battle a few Pokemon while making your way up
============================== this route. Theres nothing to do except make
your way to Oldale. You should have gained a level by the time you enter the
next town.

=============
|Oldale Town|
=============
Upon entering the town, you will see two buildings that you should get to know.
One is the Pokemon Centre. In here you will find two things - a PC for storing
=================== Pokemon and a nurse who will heal your Pokemon for you.
Item |Cost| Some centres have items that people give you, but this one
=================== does not.
Potion	     |300 |
Antidote |100 | The other is the PokeMart (blue roof). This sells many
Paralyz Heal |200 | items that are useful in the Pokemon world. Upon entering
Awakening |250 | the town, talk to the man on your right. He will escort you
=================== to the PokeMart and give you a free Potion (and these are
always useful). Once done here, move North to Route 103.

================TOP TIP===============  ===========
|You can purchase PokeBalls here once|  |Route 103|
| Birch has given you some for 200 C |  ===========
====================================== You should be competent at battling now
and Treecko and Mudkip should have learnt new moves (Absorb and Mud Slap).
Mud Slap will be useful for the impending battle, while Absorb can be used to
take energy away from the enemy and give it to you. Focus Energy on Torchic
is definately not useful sadly. But your two potions should be enough to get
you through the battle.

============================= Work your way through the grass, battling for
Pokemon |Level| % |Rarity | more experiance if you think you need it. This
============================= isn't the best place for training, so carry on
Poochyena|2 - 4|60%|V.Comman| through the grass until you get to your rival,
Wingull |2 - 4|20%|Comman | at the top of Route 103 (if you need to see where
Zigzagoon|3 - 4|20%|Comman  | he/she is look at my Place Reference Guide. S/he
============================= will tell you about the Pokemon on Route 103, and
will then challenge you to a battle.

The Pokemon s/he has depends on what Pokemon you chose. May/Brendan ALWAYS
chooses the one strongest against yours.

(Gender doesn't matter for these battles)

If you chose:

Torchic...             Mudkip...                Treecko...

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-   =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-   =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Once May/Brendan has been defeated, head over the ledges on Route 103 if you
don't want to battle wild Pokemon. I would reccomend this if your Pokemon are
weak.

=============
|Oldale Town|
=============
Head south through this town and talk to your rival at the end. They're heading
back to Littleroot, as you should do as well. I would heal your Pokemon though
if needs be.

===========
|Route 101|
===========
Head south over the ledges. No need to go into the grass.

=================
|Littleroot Town|
=================
Head straight for the lab at the south of the town. Head into the lab and talk
with the Professor and their daughter. They'll say that they think you deserve
to keep your Pokemon, and hand you a PokeDex! Not to mention five PokeBalls to
go with it!

If you want to know the controls for the PokeDex, check my controls guide near
the start of the faq. When your heading out of town, your mum will stop you and
give you an exceptionally useful item - the Running Shoes! You don't have to
equip these, just hold B and you can move twice as fast.

The PokeBall's can be used on these early Pokemon you've seen around, but you
don't have to be too bothered as they appear in Route 102 and other routes
before Rustboro.

===========
|Route 101|
===========
Head north through here. Battle the Pokemon for xp, but its not great xp so
don't spend too long here.

=============
|Oldale Town|
=============
Heal your Pokemon if needs be. If you look West, you'll see that the man there
before has been moved. you can now move onto Petalburg.

===========
|Route 103|
===========
=========================== This isn't an overly long route, but you do get
Pokemon |Level| % |Rarity| your first taste of trainer battles. Be careful
=========================== against them as trainers are usually more powerful
Poochyena|3 - 4|30%|Comman| than wild Pokemon in the area.
Wurmple  |3 - 4|30%|Comman|
Zigzagoon|3 - 4|15%|Rare  | If your a Torchic trainer I would suggest getting
Lotad    |3 - 4|20%|Comman| either a Lotad (Water/Grass) or Seedot here. A Ralts
Ralts | 4 |4% |V.Rare| is helpful for either team as well, as it grows into
Seedot | 3 |1% |V.Rare| a powerful Psychic Type not unlike Alakazam. Lotad
==========================| and Seedot come in handy for the first Gym, although
I think Lotad is better because of its origional dual type and the fact it
grows into an aswome Pokemon.

The Trainer battles aren't to difficult, the only thing =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
to watch out for being the Tallow for Treecko trainers |Youngster |
though it wouldn't cause any major problems. |Poochyena Lv5 |
                                                         |80 C                |
Luckily at these Levels the two =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-----------------------
Wurmple's can't Poison you, which |Youngster             |BugCatcher          |
is why I didn't advise you to buy |Zigzagoon Lv4; Tallow |Wurmple Lv4 (x2)    |
any Antidotes.                    |Lv3                   |64 C                |
                                  |48 C                  |                    |
You'll notice some soil at the =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
top of the map with what looks like trees in. These are 'Berrys', not unlike
the ones that were in Gold and Silver. Consult the ItemDex if you wish to see
their battle properties. The BerryDex if you wish to know more about them (Eg
PokemonBlocks - but thats very far away at the moment).

Finally towards the end of the Route is yet another Potion. Take this if your
health is low, but I doubt it will be as you have other potions (and you
should) have your second Pokemon. Now, carry on West into Petalburg!

It doesn't really matter about levels at this stage, I will tell you about
the level your Pokemon should be before big battles like Gyms, and Bosses.

================
|Petalburg City|
================
Upon entry to Petalburg it may look big and grand, however in truth there
isn't much here upon your first visit (or any other visits). The PokeMart
=================== stocks some new items. The most useful at the moment
Item |Price| is Repel. This keeps wild Pokemon at bay for a hundred
=================== steps. Incredibly useful if you are very close to the
PokeBall |200 | end of a route. I would buy two Antidotes just in case
Potion |300 | you get poisioned by the Bug creatures in Petalburg woods.
Antidote    |100  |
Paralyz Heal|200 | Once you've bought your items (you shouldn't need
Awakening |250 | PokeBal's yet) make your way to the Gym. If you attempt
Escape Rope |550 | to leave town before your aloud, Wally's dad will stop
Repel |350 | you and escort you to your fathers Gym. You might be
X Speed	    |350  | wondering who Wally is - well, he's a rather annoying
X Attack |500 | guy who is more like a second rival. He's not great at
X Defend |550 | fighting so don't worry. Go into your fathers Gym
Orange Mail |50 | to meet your father. Sadly he won't let you challenge him,
=================== but he will let you help Wally to capture a Pokemon. Don't
know who Wally is? The guy who's just walked in. So, you'll automatically
follow Wally to Route 102 where he encounters a Ralts. You may have one in your
team, I don't know. But heres MY quick guide to catching Pokemon (more can be
found in the section devoted to it...).
                                         ================TOP TIP===============
When you encounter a wild Pokemon that | Paralyz, Freeze and Sleep are the |
you want, the thing to do is throw a |most useful status allailments. They|
PokeBall. It wont' always catch if the |don't cause any damage to the enemy |
Pokemon has full health. I would suggest |Pokemon. Sleep and Freeze also make |
doing some damage to it, or causing | sure they can't move. Cool no? |
some status alailments (Burn, Paralyz). ======================================
Once you've taken the enemy down to the red, or at a stable lower level but
asleep/frozen/paralyzed, then its time to throw PokeBall's. The stronger the
Pokemon, the better PokeBall should be used. The handy table shows the order
================ the Ball's go in, but it doesn't show all PokeBall's (consult)
No.|PokeBall | the itemdex over that.
================
01 |PokeBall | Your Pokemon will be sent to your PC box if you have more than
02 |Great Ball | 6 Pokemo on you. From here you can manage your captured beasts
03 |Ultra Ball | and (if you wish) set them free.
04 |Master Ball|
================ Anyway. Back to the game. Once you've helped Wally, you'll be
taken back to Petalburg's Gym and talk with your father. He will send you on
your way. You'll see Eshinda on the way and after a short conversation, you
can continue on-route to Rustboro City!

===========
|Route 104|
===========
Theres only one Route between Rustboro and Petalburg, however there is also
your first dungeon in the form of Petalburg Woods. More on that in a second
though.

=========================== The Pokemon here you've met before, but are at a
Pokemon  |Level| % |Rarity| higher level. I wouldn't suggest training here, as
=========================== Petalburg Woods is a better location for that and
Poochyena| 4-5 |50%|Comman| you have many battles coming up where you can gain
Wurmple | 4-5 |30%|Comman| experiance. A Tallow could be a good capture if you
Tallow | 4-5 |10%|Rare | need a filler Pokemon. However he isn't one of my
Wingull | 3-5 |10%|Rare | personal favourites so I would leave him and carry
=========================== on.

The battles here are quite easy, =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
so you shouldn't have much        |Youngster            |Fisherman           |
trouble with them. The zigzagoon  |Zigzagoon Lv.5;      |Magikarp Lv.9       |
and the Seedot are the most       |Seedot Lv.7          |360 C               |
dangerous at Lv7. You sould sotrm |360C |--------------------|
this.                             =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-|Rich Girl           |
                                                        |Zigzagoon Lv.7      |
There are two berry's at the top of the route, collect |140 C |
them. Its exactly what you got earlier on Route 103. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Move left from the berry trees and north. Battle the final trainer her and her
Zigzagoon which you should move out the way easilly. If your going to go to
the Pokemon Centre, I'd do that in a second. Go up into Petalburg Woods.

=================
|Petalburg Woods|
=================
First things first. If you need to/want to heal before =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
the next few battles do so after this small bit. Head |Bug Catcher |
right immediately then downwards, back through a fence   |Wurmple Lv.3 (x4)   |
and onto Route 104. Grab the item near the girl (which |48 C |
is a PokeBall) then either heal or go back to Petalburg ----------------------
Woods.                                                   |Bug Catcher         |
                                                         |Nincada Lv.6 (x2)   |
The woods are shaped in an spirally shape - you head left|96 C |
then right then left. Go left to start with and battle =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
the Bug Catcher, which is a simple battle.

=========================== Pick up the Paralyz Heal (it should come in handy)
Pokemon |Level| % |Rarity| and head left. Your Pokemon should be nearing Level
=========================== 10 and you should have 3 by the end of Petalburg
Poochyena| 5-6 |30%|Comman| Woods (or two Pokemon Level 12/13). You'll see a red
Wurmple | 5-6 |25%|Comman| haired man who is being chased by an Aqua Grunt.
Shroomish| 5-6 |15%|Comman| An Aqua Grunt is a member of Team Aqua, one of the
Silcoon | 5 |10%|Rare | main criminal organisations in Hoenn. He wants some
Cascoon | 5 |10%|Rare | Devon Corp Goods (Devon Corp being a company that
Tallow | 5-6 |5% |V.Rare| the red haired man works for. Got the story now?)
Slakoth | 5-6 |5% |V.Rare| that the man has. You have to stop him by battling
=========================== his Pokemon!

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- If your Pokemon are nearing the Level 10 I suggested
Aquq Grunt | then this will be a walkover for you. If your really
---------------------- stuck I'd go with Special attacks, so your starter will
Poochyena Lv.9 | be the best for this. Once you've won, you'll get a
180 C | Great Ball from the Devon Corp dude and he'll run North
Strat: Use Special | back to Rustboro City, which is where your headed.
Attacks as it'll kill|
him quicker. | Carry on going through the zigzaging path and you'll
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- find the final trainer. His Pokemon offer good
experiance and give you the final push to level 10. After this battle you'll
come across a rare item called an Ether. This replenishes your "Power Points"
of your moves, so that you can use them some more. I would save this for Gym
Battles, or alternitavely when your facing the Elite 4 and you can't heal.

Finally head North and you'll be out of Petalburg Woods. Don't worry if your
not Level 10, as there are quite a few battles until you enter Rustboro and it
only really matters if you have Torchic.

===========
|Route 104|
===========
After stepping out into the bright sunlight, you'll see a man near you. Talk
to him for the imfamous TM09 Bullet Seed! Please note that the Pokemon your
able to capture here are the same ones you were able to capture on Route 104
earlier.

On your left is a building and some berry's. Behind the building is some
grass with a Potion in the middle. You should have a supply of these from
the PokeMart, but just in case you need it keep it. The soil has two Cheri
Berry's and 2 Oran Berry's in.

Enter the shop to get the Wailmer Patel ================TOP TIP===============
from the girl in the upper middle part |Keep track of how long your planted |
of the shop. Also get your first Persim | Berry's take to grow. It will help |
Berry from the woman at the right of the| you to realise when to pick Berry's|
store.                                  ======================================

Go down and right along the track.=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
There are many battles to get |Rich Boy |Lass |
your Pokemon levels higher before |Zigzagoon Lv.7      |Lotad Lv.6;          |
the Gym battle. In truth unless   |1400 C              |Shroomish Lv.6       |
you don't have any water/grass    ---------------------|96 C                 |

Water. If you wanted to capture any Pokemon here you can just look at my notes
earlier but theres nothing of interest.

Theres a final pair of Berry trees here that supply you with two Cheri and
two Leppa Berry's. The old woman standing by these will also provide you with
a Cheri Berry. Move north through the puddles into... Rustboro City!

===============
|Rustboro City|
===============
First things first head to the Pokemon Centre. Explore the town to see what you
can find. However use this guide to find everyting it has to offer. Upon
entering the city look to your left at the tall building. It looks like nothing
but enter and go to the second floor. Talk to the short man/big child and he
will give you a Premium Ball. Don't complain that you just got a Great Ball, it
was free.

=================== As you can see the PokeMart stocks exactly the same as in
Item |Price| Petalburg so grab what you need and move on. The Pokemon
=================== Centre doesn't have any hidden items in either.
PokeBall    |200  |
Potion |300 |The house to the right of the PokeCentre has a man in it.
Super Potion|700 |Talk to him and he will give you the elusive HM01 Cut. You

Escape Rope |550 |place and unlike the other trees in the game, almost

X Speed     |350  |
X Attack |500 | The house behind the Pokemon Centre (dubbed, by me, "Sick"
X Defend |350 | House" lets you gain alternate wallpapers for your PC,
=================== however I am unable to find out how to get these yet so
bear with me.

*update* it seems no-one is able to figure out how to get these box papers.
However through the wonderful world of hacking we do know that there are:

- Plusle Pattern
- Minun Pattern
- Diglit Notes
- Togepi Frame
- Hearts Pattern

The Pokemon School is on the other side of the city to the sick house. In here
you can learn about status conditions, but the main reason to come in here is
================TOP TIP=============== to collect the Quick Claw. It makes you
| Put the Quick Claw on slow Pokemon | go first in most duels. Ignore the huge

====================================== the Pokemon Gym!

========================================================================
|Battle For the Gym Badge: Foxi Miss Roxi! - she's a whole lotta woman!|
========================================================================
That age old battle music will come into your ears and you'll be taken back to
your Red/Blue days. The tune that put the spirit into your heart and spurred
you onto battling the Gym Leaders Pokemon taunting you up ahead.

The three junior trainers are avoidable, but I wouldn't recomend it. Torchic
owners look out for these battles, everyone else should find them a breeze if
you use your type attacks.

       =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
       |Youngster          |Youngster           |Hiker               |

       =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Those should have been easy for your Treecko with Bullet Seed, Mudkip with
Water Gun or step-in Water or Grass types those Torchic owners have. But
now its time for the real thing. Roxanne wants a battle people. Give the lady
exactly what she wants.

- Gain your second Gym Badge

|Rustboro City|
===============
If you followed my guide last time, you'll be in Rustboro City and will have
just defeated Roxanne for the first Gym Badge. Congratulations on your
excellent win. If your having trouble against her I suggest battling some wild
Pokemon in Petalburg Woods and getting your levels higher.

After you've exited the Gym you'll see a blue pirate hatted man run away,
quickly followed by a red haired man. These may look familiar because they
are the people who you helped in Petalburg Woods. Go North yourself, quickly
stopping off on...

===========
|Route 115|
===========
Follow the path around the beach to get the Super Potion. As you can't buy
these yet, this one will come in handy.

|Rustboro City|

Head right and you'll meet the Devon Corp man. The Team Aqua grunt has nicked
some things. He wants you to get it back for him. Oh the fun...

===========
|Route 116|
===========
Get in some practice, as the next Gym Battle is not that far off. You'll meet
some trainers on this route - 10 infact before Team Aqua. There are some good
========================= Pokemon down here as well. An Abra in case you didn't
