Eliwood, Lyn, and Hector make their way into Caelin castle, which is still full
of Laus soldiers. There are apparently some Caelin survivors as well, whom are
trapped in jail cells. This battle has a ton of Archers and Knights, so your
own Archers and Florina are not recommended for this battle. Bring Matthew and
Priscilla, definitely. Erk is recommended to take out the Knights. Also bring
an axe user or two (Hector and Dorcas), Oswin, and a Cavalier with the Heavy
Spear equipped (my choice: Kent). Lyn should also be brought, after all, she IS
trying to save her grandfather. If you didn't already get Merlinus, this is
where he will join.

To reach Chapter 16x, keep at least one friendly Soldier alive.

Once the battle begins, Eliwood tells you to try and save the Caelin soldiers.
Have two characters guard Merlinus (Oswin and someone else, preferably someone
who can use lances), while everyone else goes straight inside and towards the
throne. Kill off the Knights with Erk, Hector, Dorcas, and Kent while you kill
Archers with short range attackers (Eliwood, Lyn, Matthew, etc.).

On turn 2, a Laus soldier will let a Caelin Mercenary named Raven out of his
cell, because he wants to go kill Hector. Lucius tries to prevent him from
going, but it's no use. You must quickly get up there, as fast as you can, and
have Priscilla talk to Raven. Don't have her dilly-dallying in the back ranks,
healing people; keep her up front.

Simply keep beating back the Archers/Knights as you progress towards Raven.
Some of the Archers are pretty high levels (some are level 7!) and give off
some good EXP. Oh yeah, don't forget about the treasures in the bottom left
corner. Have Erk draw out the Shaman and kill him, and then lure the Archer
inside to the eastern wall and kill him as well. After both are dead, Matthew
is free to go inside and open the chests for a Hero Crest and an Unlock Staff.

On turn 6 the allied Soldiers will retrieve the weapons they stashed away.
Lucius still doesn't want to fight, but they give him weapons and Vulneraries
anyway. The Soldiers do want to fight, however, and open the door. YOU MUST
QUICKLY HAVE PRISCILLA TALK TO RAVEN. If not, he will kill the Soldiers, which
is very bad.

It's also around this time that reinforcements will appear for Laus. A total of
six Cavaliers will come to attack Merlinus, but Oswin and the other guy should
have no problems fending them off. Also, some Shamans will appear near where
Raven is.

An Archer up towards Raven drops a Door Key, and the Fighter drops a Hammer
(useful as hell in this level, due to all the Knights you're about to face).
Have Priscilla head straight towards Raven and talk to him. He will join your
group, and you will learn a little more about their background.

I strongly recommend Rescuing one of the Caelin soldiers, because if all three
die, then you won't go to the Gaiden chapter. And believe me, those Shamans can
take out those Soldiers very quickly. Also have Raven go over to talk to Lucius
so that s/he can join you.

Keep heading for the throne. I had Lucius kill all four of the Shamans in the
little room, but you can also open the door and storm it if you wish. Kill the
two Knights in the upper left corner (the one in the room is easily killed with
Erk/Lucius) and have Matthew open the chests for a Silver Sword and a Knight
Crest.

Now it's time for the throne room. Bait out the Knights with Hector and kill
them with whoever. Bernard may seem very hard, but he is easily taken out with
the Wolf Beil or Hammer. He is very resistant to magic attacks, so don't waste
their durability. After he is dead, seize the throne with Eliwood.

Lyn searches for her father, but only finds blood. However, an Ostian spy named
Leila emerges. She tells Lyn that Hausen is safe, and talks privately to
Eliwood about his father. She explains that the Black Fang is a Bern league of
assassins who at one point were chivalrous but now are just common murderers.
They are holding Eliwood's father at Valor Isle.

She explains that after Brendan Reed, the founder of the Black Fang, got
married, a person named Nergal started to take control. Ephidel is merely a
servant of Nergal, who manipulated Darin to turn on Ostia, and this resulted in
Helman and Elbert joining him. She describes Ephidel as someone who always
wears a cloak, but has strange, glowing golden eyes... On the way out, she has
a chat with Matthew.

Lyn and Hector throw all their support behind Eliwood as he decides to go to
this "Dread Isle". Lyn talks with her soldiers, who give her an item depending
on how many Soldiers survived (3 = Red Gem, 2 = Light Rune, and 1 = Mine). If
you kept at least one of them alive, go to Chapter 16x. Otherwise, go to
Chapter 17.

Anyone    -> Fargus      End Chapter.

If you kept at least one NPC Soldier alive in Chapter 16, then you're in the
right place. If all three died, then go to Chapter 17.

Eliwood goes to Badon to seek passage to the Dread Isle. However, nobody seems
willing to take them there. One man gives a suggestion; Pirates. Eliwood and
Hector think about checking this out, but Lyn doesn't want to. Eliwood and
Hector go anyway.

Fargus, the leader of the pirates, says he's willing to go to Valor if Eliwood
pays his 100,000 Gold. However, Eliwood doesn't have that kind of money, so it
looks like there is no choice but to go to the arena to earn some. However,
Dart, one of the captain's crew, tells Eliwood that if he can beat the pirates
and talk to Fargus at the docks, then he'll book passage for free.

This can either be an extremely tough or extremely easy chapter. If you want to
beat all the pirates head on and then go talk to Fargus, then this will be
very, very hard. But you can also just sneak by all the enemies, and only a few
will attack you. However, fighting all the enemies has its benefits; an Arena.
Arenas allow for unlimited leveling up and money, but it is pretty risky (if a
unit dies, they are gone forever). So its up to you (if you are confident, then
I recommend going for the Arena).

"Beat All The Enemies" Strategy:

Deploy Eliwood, Oswin (with the Horseslayer equipped), and... Marcus. Although
usually I disapprove of using the purple freak, in this case he is very useful.
Make sure he has the Silver Sword and Silver Lance equipped. Also bring
Priscilla and/or Serra. (546372) Other than those, it's really up to you. Pick
your favorite characters, or characters you want to level up. Using Hector and
Lyn is not recommended, because they will be forced to be in your party in
later levels, and thus won't need leveling up now.

If you must know, my party was Eliwood, Priscilla, Oswin, Marcus, Erk, Kent,
Guy, Florina and Raven. But again, I leave the choices to you. MAKE SURE YOU
DEPLOY OSWIN IN THE LOWER LEFT CORNER.

Have Oswin go as far towards the southwest enemies as he can, and make sure he
has the Horseslayer equipped. He should be right below a red house. Have three
characters go with him. Guy should go north, because a few Pirates will try to
come down from there in the northeast corner. Guy alone should be able to
handle them all. Marcus and everyone else should go west across the middle
village. Move Marcus right outside the enemies' range. Also visit the village
to get Canas.

On the next turn, have Oswin move left one space. Adjust your formations and
end your turn. On enemy turn 2 some reinforcements will arrive, led by the boss
of this battle, Damian. He will try to attack Oswin, but if he has the
Horseslayer equipped, Damian should be almost dead.

Have Oswin finish off Damian when it's your turn again. Now it's time for a
good ol' mass slaughter. You must finish off as many units as possible on this
turn, or else it's very likely you'll lose someone. I had the three guys I sent
with Oswin finish off the two of the Pirates and the Archer. Marcus should
attack the Pirate closest to him, and someone else behind him should finish him
off. Have everyone else attack the remaining enemies. I got them all killed in
a single turn.

Hopefully nobody will be killed. After the enemies in the middle and Damian are
dead, this battle is cake. Finish off any remaining enemies (don't forget to
heal wounded units!) around you. When there are only two enemies left on the
map (Dart and Fergus), it's Arena time.

First off, don't kill Dart, or else you won't be able to get him later. Don't
worry, he won't attack you, even if you accidentally attack him or if you get
in his range. Now that I've said that, move everyone to the Arena and start
fighting. The Arena is very risky, and I recommend you use extreme caution
before you fight a match.

USE THE B BUTTON TO QUIT A FIGHT IN PROGRESS.

However, note that the match won't end until both units have attacked. There is
also another trick to use, which involves resetting. Choose a character and
have them enter the Arena. If say Hector is up against a Myrmidon with a Silver
Sword, then before you start the battle, reset. Move someone like Oswin in the
Arena instead to take out that enemy. This always works. However, if you start
the battle, the reset trick won't work.

Winning gives you EXP and money (double whatever you paid). Losing makes you
lose the character AND your money. However, quitting only makes you lose the
money. So it's common sense that, if a character is going to die, that you mash
the B button like crazy.

I only got four characters to level 20, but it is possible to get all 10
characters (the 9 you deployed and Canas) to that level. Level 20 is the
maximum level a unit can reach. Also, since you have a Knight Crest and Hero
Crest, you can promote a unit once they reach level 10 (but I recommend waiting
until 20). Once they promote, they reset to level 1, but retain their stats and
gain new abilities.

Here are the people you can promote right now (select 1 from each section):

Hero Crest: Knight Crest:
Guy Oswin
Raven Kent
Dorcas Sain
Bartre Lowen

They are listed in the order which I recommend you promote them. Of course,
what I recommend the most is that you make your own choice. Also, if you are
playing through Hector's story, I recommend promoting Bartre ASAP, because it
will help you recruit a character later on. Once you promote them, you can keep
training them until they reach level 20 again! At that point, they will be
maxed out for the rest of the game.

Of course, this is a very tedious process, and you should expect to quit and
use the reset trick often. Because if you don't, you'll have to go through this
battle all over again, and that would suck if you've spent hours of leveling
like some people do.

Once you're done training, visit all the villages for: Lancereaver, Sleep
Staff, Short Bow, and a Devil Axe. Then buy whatever you need at the Vendor
(you should have plenty of money) and talk to Fargus to end the Chapter. Attack
and/or killing Fargus results in a Game Over, so MAKE SURE that you don't hit
"Attack" by mistake! (It is the top option on the list) Wouldn't that totally
blow if you leveled up everyone to 20 and then attacked him? Of freaking course
it would. So carefully make sure you don't.

"Be A Sissy" Strategy:

This is much easier than the above strategy, but you won't be able to use the
Arena. You'll fight as little enemies as possible, and the weakest ones at
that. Make sure you deploy Florina, and that's really the only requirement.

If you get too close to Fargus' Pirates in the southwest or center of the map,
then Fargus will have them attack you. So be careful not to get too close to
them. Visiting the two Villages above the central Pirates is too close, and
Fargus WILL tell them to attack you if you visit them.

First visit the two easternmost villages. You'll get Canas, the only Shaman in
the game (and quite possibly the most overrated character in the game), and
also a Devil Axe. Visit the Inn for a tip on how to proceed. Leave someone (a
Cavalier) one space down and two spaces west of Canas' village (right in front
of the yellow house). Move everyone else along the north edge of the level and
have them go west. Kill all the easy Pirates you meet along the way.

On enemy turn 2, Damian of the Black Fang will arrive. But don't worry, he
won't attack you unless you get to close to him/Fargus' Pirates. Just keep
moving west along the northern edge, until you get to the Vendor. Go BEHIND the
Vendor and move west, and visit the village for a Lancereaver.

You should be able to have someone go talk to Fargus, but DON'T DO THIS YET.
See the village right above the central Pirates? Move Florina above that
village, at the top edge of the screen. The guy on the eastern side of the map
should still be near the other village as well.

When you're just about done with this battle, have Florina and that other guy
visit the two remaining villages. They will get a Sleep Staff and a Short Bow.
Of course, Fargus will tell his men to attack you. But it's still your turn, so
talk to Fargus in order to end the Chapter.

Fargus is pleased with how you progressed and keeps his word to give you
passage to the Dread Isle.

Eliwood approaches Valor on Fargus' Davros. After Eliwood speaks with Fargus
for a bit, Dart tells them that someone has been found adrift in the ocean. The
person is none other than Ninian. As Lyn nudges her awake, Dart reports that
enemy ships are approaching. They knock a hole in the hull, and water starts
flowing in. Eliwood tells Fargus to go take care of the water while he takes
care of the enemies.

Jake the pirate will tell you about the Vendor and Armory on the deck. This
will be the last time you can buy items for a while (until Chapter 20 I think),
so make sure you have everything you need! This will be one of the more
difficult battles in the game, but it will be much easier if you abused the
Arena in 16x. Send out Lucius, Oswin, and Matthew, definitely. Florina will be
very useful as well. Other than that, send out whoever you want. Axe users are
not recommended here, as well as those with low Resistance. Erk also shouldn't
be deployed (Dark > Anima).

Have Lucius wait on the top of the "stairs" and have someone else go east
across the northern bridge to confront the enemy Mercenaries. Make sure that
person can hold out a lot/can take a lot of hits, as my Raven very barely lived
from being attacked by all those enemies. Have Florina go west, making sure to
keep her out of the range of the Shamans. Everyone else should stay up where
Merlinus is, so that they can't get attacked.

Basically, my strategy is to just hold out. Lucius should easily take out any
Shamans that attack him, and if you have someone like Oswin or Lowen guarding
the eastern bridge then those enemies should pose little problems as well. Make
sure you look at all their weapons, as some enemies have special ones (for
example, one has a Longsword and one has a Armorslayer).

When the first enemy wave is about to be crushed, don't be afraid to send in
the guys in the back to wipe out the weakened Shamans and Mercs. The enemies
drop a lot of items: a Longsword, Guiding Ring, Pure Water, and a Red Gem.
Also, Matthew can steal some valuable stuff this chapter. Lots of the enemies
only carry Vulneraries or Pure Waters, but the boss has some Speedwings. I'd
give them to Oswin, but Dorcas and Bartre are good choices, if you're planning
on using them.

You can end this Chapter before the limit expires by killing Zoldam. A strong
physical attacker with high HP and who can attack twice works best. I don't
recommend doing this, though, unless you've fully stocked up on items and are
ready for the next chapter. If you do attack Zoldam, then be aware that his
Luna spell negates Resistance.

Reinforcements will pop up all over the place. Watch the stairs on the left and
right ships, as quite a few will come out of there. On turn 7, Zoldam will call
for another ship to attack the stern. Even more reinforcements will come (8
total from the south side). Just take them down like you took everyone else
down. Their Pegasus Knights fall easily to bows.

Once all the enemies are killed, spend the remaining turns shopping. When the
11 turns have passed, Fargus will come up and kill everyone else that's still
alive. And your journey to the Dread Isle will finally come to an end. Ninian
says that she wishes to go with you.

In the Dragon's Gate, Eliwood is being held captive by Nergal. Darin is with
him. Nergal tells Ephidel to go with Darin and take out Eliwood, while
Limstella goes to contact Sonia in Bern. After this, Ephidel has a run-in with
someone, and I'm not going to spoil what happens. Let's just say this is one of
the reasons Nintendo refused to publish Fire Emblem games before.

Eliwood and company finally reach the island. Fargus sends his "suicide squad"
captain Dart to go with you. Meanwhile, after your group finds something on the
ground (which again I won't spoil), a Black Fang Nomad named Uhai from Sacae
grabs Lyn. He tries to talk you into giving up Ninian and leaving, but Eliwood
refuses, and Uhai fights you.

To reach Chapter 18x, you must kill Uhai in 15 turns.

This will be another fog of war battle, so deploy Matthew, despite what just
happened to him. Florina must be deployed if you want one of the best
characters in the game. Two Cavaliers should be deployed, as well as Hector,
one or two sword wielders, both Priscilla and Serra, and whoever else you want
to deploy.

Deploy Matthew so that you can see the enemy Thief towards the northeast. Place
both of your Cavaliers in the upper right corner. Florina and a sword wielder
should be placed in the back, while Hector and another fighter should be up
front. Make sure you equip Torches in this battle.

Dart will automatically be deployed, and he will talk with you. Meanwhile, if
you deployed Matthew, he will talk with Hector (if you didn't send Hector, then
he will talk with Eliwood). The very first thing to do is to send the Cavalier
that is farthest away from the Pirate to attack him. Make sure he can kill him.
Once the Pirate is dead have the other Cavalier attack the Thief. If he kills
him, good. If not, don't worry.

Dart should break the snag to the lower right with his Steel Axe, and Rebecca,
Serra and Lucius should go with him. Have Florina stay where she is while a
sword unit goes north, towards the beach. Everyone else should go south. There
will be a ton of enemies that will attack you, but you should be able to hold
out.

On turn 2 have the Cavalier in the back move as close as he can towards the
Thief, while the other Cavalier finishes him off for the Torch staff. You
should then have those two retreat as soon as they can. In Dart's group, you
can steal a Light Rune from an enemy Cavalier, while a Cavalier near the
southern group has a Mine. Have Rebecca, Lucius, and Dart do most of the
fighting down there while Serra heals them. Your main group should just press
on towards the southeast.

On turn 3, Fiora will come to destroy the Black Fang. Have her sister, Florina,
talk to her before she gets herself killed by the platoon of Nomads! After
Florina convinces her to join Eliwood, you will have one of the best characters
in the game on your team. Overall, I would say she's number five in the game,
but if you're playing in Eliwood's storyline then she's number four. Also, some
Pirates will appear in the northern sea so they can attack Merlinus. Make sure
that someone is guarding him.

Keep moving towards the southeast corner, because that's where the boss is.
Dart's group should break the snag to the south, and Lucius should go over to
kill the Shaman (he'll get the Nosferatu book). Other items that enemies will
drop include a Torch staff and a Longbow, and I think that's it.

Uhai is pretty tough. He's in a forest, which gives him evasion and defense
bonuses. Whatever you do, don't use Fiora's Steel Lance to take him down. He
killed my Fiora in one turn, and I had to restart. Hector, Lyn, and Eliwood's
special weapons work best. Oswin or a Cavalier are good choices as well. Be
careful, as he can attack from 1, 2, or 3 spaces away.

Once you kill him, he gives you directions to the Dragon's Gate. You choose to
believe him and proceed. If you beat this in less than 15 turns, then go to
Chapter 18x. Otherwise, go to Chapter 19.
