Eliwood  <-> Hector      No effect.

After saving the village, Eliwood begins the search for his father. The
magistrate suggests looking in Laus, and Eliwood agrees. The first stop along
the way is in Santaruz, where Marquess Helman is a good friend of Eliwood and
Elbert's. However, it seems a mysterious man (take a good look at what you can
see on his face; notice the eye color) is manipulating him for some reason. He
sends some men to attack Eliwood before he can reach Santaruz. Before the
battle starts, Dorcas says hello to you.

So anyway, first have Marcus go to the northern village for a Secret Book. This
increases a character's Skill by 2. If you plan on using Bartre or Lowen, give
it to them. If not, then I recommend waiting until later in the battle and
giving it to a guy named Oswin.

The first part of this battle is easy; just slaughter the oncoming Brigands
with swords while taking out the Mercs with spears and Soldiers with Axes. On
enemy turn 3, Zagan's main group will advance. Just as all seems lost, on turn
4, some help arrives for you.

A guy named Hector beats down a Santaruz Soldier, saying that he must hurry to
help Eliwood. Serra and Matthew are with him, as well as a guy named Oswin.
Hector tells Matthew and Serra to hide while he and Oswin go help Eliwood's
group. Have Oswin kill the two Soldiers to the east while Hector attacks the
enemies to the south and joins Eliwood. They have a conversation if you have
them talk.

In the Armory, I would buy an Iron Sword for Eliwood and an Iron Axe for
Hector. Meanwhile, have Lowen go stand on the Fort to the east, to the
southwest of the enemy group, and have him equip his Iron Sword. The Brigands
won't be able to hit him and the Mercs and Archer won't put a dent in his
pimpin' gold armor.

But you have to watch out for the boss, Zagan, who is pretty tough. He is the
first boss that actually moves around (if I recall correctly). I used Eliwood
to kill him fairly easily. Just make sure you use cover.

After the battle, Eliwood talks with Hector. His brother, Lord Uther, is the
new Marquess of Ostia. Hector then introduces Oswin, Serra, and Matthew to
Eliwood (yeah, the same Matthew and Serra from before). Hector tells Eliwood
that some assassins from Bern are lurking around in Lycia. Marcus tells Hector
that someone wants Eliwood dead, and Hector tells them about the guard from
Santaruz who didn't help Eliwood. Eliwood suspects something might be wrong
with Lord Helman.

Also, Hector talks with you, and Matthew and Serra are glad to see you again.
Matthew reveals himself as a spy working for Ostia, and Serra is working for
Ostia as well. Well, on to Santaruz!

Matthew   -> Guy         Guy joins.

Thanks to the help of his friend Hector, Eliwood defeats the bandits attacking
him and continues on to Santaruz. Once he gets close, another man attacks him.
Meanwhile, inside Santaruz Castle, Marquess Helman talks to a man he identifies
as "Ephidel". Seeing that he had almost killed Eliwood, he says he is going to
be involved with the Black Fang no longer and will go talk to him about his
father. However, the mysterious Ephidel cuts him down...

To get to Chapter 13x, you must visit the Village in the upper left corner.

Matthew and Serra have joined, and Lowen talks to you at the beginning of the
battle. Have him go down and attack the Brigand, and have Rebecca finish him
off. Have Marcus go to the houses in the west, while Dorcas, Bartre and Oswin
knock down the tree and enter the Village. They'll find a merchant of sorts who
drops a Torch. Have Oswin knock down the other snag, take out the Mercenary,
and then have Dorcas and Bartre go on a killing spree against the Soldiers
around the castle.

Meanwhile, everyone else should go south. Have Hector stand on the Fort that is
just out of Guy's (the enemy Myrmidon's) range. Let Eliwood, Lowen, Matthew,
Rebecca, and Serra stay in the forests away from them. Reinforcements will pour
out of the other Forts in time, but Hector should easily be able to handle them
all. Whatever you do, DON'T get into Guy's range. He can easily kill any of
your characters.

When all the enemies aside from Guy are mopped up in the southeast, have
Matthew stand on the Fort. On the next turn, have him go up and talk to Guy.
Because Matthew saved his life, Guy will switch to your side. Hooray! Guy ends
up awesome, so you won't be disappointed.

Hopefully Dorcas/Bartre can handle those Soldiers by the castle. If not then
have your main force go help them out. Make sure you buy an Iron Sword (for
Guy), a Hand Axe (for Hector), and a Heal (for Serra)! You can buy some other
stuff if you want to as well.

Now for the boss. He is pretty strong, but Hector should be able to take him.
Have him equip the Wolf Beil and just wait in front of the boss. The boss
should attack him, and then Hector should counter. Heal Hector with Serra and
then attack him. If Hector misses, rescue him with someone (Oswin), because
even Hector is likely to be killed in two hits. Just keep trying.

Eventually Boies will die, leaving you free to enter the castle. You'll see
Helman is gravely wounded. With his dying breath, he tells you to go meet
Marquess Darin of Laus. Eliwood and Hector agree and get moving. If you visited
the house in the upper left corner, go to Chapter 13x. Otherwise go to Chapter
14.

After beating back the enemies inside Santaruz, a dying Helman tells Eliwood to
go confront Darin in Laus. Along the way, Eliwood stops at a village near
Caelin to rest. Once they set up camp, Eliwood and Hector find a merchant,
named Merlinus, being attacked by bandits. Of course, the decide to help him.
If you didn't visit the village in Chapter 13, you should be at Chapter 14.

The goal of this chapter is to protect Merlinus for 7 turns. This is another
"fog of war" chapter, so Matthew will be useful, as will the Torch you got last
Chapter. It's not too difficult if you ask me. I recommend having Guy go
southeast to handle the oncoming Brigands in that corner. Have Eliwood,
Rebecca, Lowen, Serra, Matthew, Dorcas and Bartre go north while Hector and
Oswin go west and then north. Give Marcus the Torch and have him follow the
northern group.

The enemies will break down the snags in order to reach your group, so be on
your guard. Have Marcus go visit the Village in the upper right corner for 5000
Gold. Keep advancing everyone else towards the upper left corner (aside from
Guy, who should stay down in the bottom right corner. Have him use Vulneraries
if he gets hurt by the Nomad, which is the only thing likely to hit him).

Eventually, the enemies will break down the snag in the upper left corner that
leads to the bottom left. Kill the enemies that come down, then have Oswin go
up and attack Puzon. He is semi-tough, and can easily kill Hector. Oswin should
be able to take him out in two attacks with an Iron Lance.

Puzon is the only real threat here. Be careful that you don't get too carried
away attacking that you leave Merlinus open to being hit by the Nomads. It only
takes two arrows to kill him. Also beware of advancing Bartre, Dorcas, or
Hector too fast, because there are swordsmen all around. Turn seven will be
over before you know it. After the battle, Merlinus thanks you for saving him.
To sum it up, he joins you.

*Random "Did-You-Know": This Chapter's map is exactly the same one as when you
battle Erik in Fuuin no Tsurugi.

After saving Merlinus (or not), Eliwood and Hector continue on to Laus to meet
Lord Darin. However, at Laus castle, Ephidel warns Darin about Eliwood's
approach. Fearing that he might know their plan and might tell Ostia, Darin
sends his son Erik (the same one from Fuuin no Ken) to kill Eliwood's group and
prevent them getting past Laus. Erik happily agrees and goes out to meet
Eliwood.

Hector and Eliwood notice all the preparations for war that are going on in
Laus. Marcus informs them that their past "acquaintance", Erik, is coming.
Hector, who hates him, leaves. Erik tries to trick Eliwood into telling him if
he's going to Ostia, but Eliwood sees through it. Hector comes back and tells
Eliwood that Laus troops have them surrounded, and at this point Erik reveals
himself and returns back to the castle. An old woman, Hannah, will now join you
for no real reason. She has the power to predict the future... Sort of. But she
cannot fight. Eliwood lets her join.

Finally, it's about time you got into another "real battle". Once again you can
choose who to deploy (no limit here, so send out everyone), and switch the
formations. Hannah can also give you advice on the upcoming battle, and Marcus
can tell you your Tactician data and Rank. Also, if you got Merlinus, he can
store up to 100 items, and you can also sell stuff to him.

Make sure Serra is in the upper-left corner of the formation screen! It will
make recruiting a certain character much easier. Deploy Hector two spaces below
her. Place Bartre and Dorcas on the frontlines, and keep Marcus in the back.
Guy and Matthew should be placed towards the bottom.

Once the battle starts, Merlinus asks whether or not you want to deploy him.
Deploying him on the map allows you to give him extra items to store. However,
he is vulnerable to being attacked. He will grow a level for each Chapter he
survives. Marcus will ramble on to you about something, and in a nearby
village, Erk talks with a villager who refuses him assistance. Erk then leaves.

Have Hector kill the Soldier that is close to Serra. Then have Serra move as
close as she can towards Erk. She'll have to speak to him if you want him to
join. Have Bartre and Dorcas go southwest, but try to keep them out of the
range of as many enemies as possible. Have the remaining characters attack the
two Cavaliers at the back of your army. Marcus should guard Merlinus. Also have
him visit the two houses, as they give some important information on a girl
trapped in the southern village...

On turn 2, that girl speaks to one of the men in the village. They say they
will never give in to Darin and that she is safe in the village. However,
that's not entirely true, as in a few turns enemies will try to burn it down!
Go have a character save it ASAP. Meanwhile, Serra should talk to Erk and
convert him. His Goddess Icon permanently raises Luck by 2. I say give it to
Oswin, but if you're going to use Bartre, I'd give it to him. Other good
candidates are Hector and Lowen.

Simply keep pressing onward. When Pirates start advancing on the mainland, send
down Matthew and Guy to meet them. Hector and Oswin should be able to go west
from where Erk joined. Have everyone else just go across the middle. Also,
eventually Brigands will pour down from the mountains in the northwest.

On enemy turn 4, Erik will request reinforcements from his father. However,
Ephidel decides to leave after seeing that Darin is going to lose. Darin asks
him for one more chance, and Ephidel makes him an offer; stay here and die, or
abandon his son and kingdom and then rule over all of Lycia. Darin decides to
join Ephidel, and leaves Erik to his fate.

On turn 5, it will start raining. This will slow down the enemy
Pirates/Brigands and will hopefully buy you enough time to reach them and kill
them or save the villages before they destroy them. If Erk goes to the southern
village he will get a special conversation with Priscilla, and she will join.
She will join anyway if Erk isn't the one that visits it, and you can have them
both talk afterwards. The village in the north gives you an Iron Blade, which
should be given to Guy.

After eliminating the Pirates that are trying to attack the southern village, I
would move Guy and Matthew back up to Marcus and Merlinus, as another Pirate
will emerge and will try to kill him. You must always have someone ready to
protect Merlinus. But don't worry if he dies, as he will just come back next
Chapter.

Once the clouds clear and the rain stops, there should be few enemies left on
the battlefield. However, Erik is easily the toughest of them all. Gah, he just
killed my Lowen in one turn with his Silver Spear... Note to you: Don't use
Lowen. Hold on, let me get back to where I was... OK, where was I? Oh yeah, the
easiest way to take out Erik is by using Hector's Wolf Beil axe. Two turns and
he should be out. However, beware, as he almost killed my Hector. Let HIM
attack YOU on his turn, and then use a Vulnerary on your turn. He will drop his
awesome Silver Spear.

Wipe out any remaining enemies (the only Cavalier without a lance is the one
south of Erik) and the battle is yours. You capture Erik, and Eliwood questions
him about his father, who has mysteriously disappeared. Erik eventually leaks
out the whole plot of rebellion. Apparently Darin wanted a rebellion, and
surprisingly Santaruz and even Pherae accepted. However, Eliwood's dad got into
an argument with Darin and left, never to be seen again. This whole plot of
rebellion was introduced by Ephidel, who serves a man named Nergal. Eliwood
refuses to believe this, and stays in Laus, searching for Darin.

Eliwood and Hector still haven't found Darin. Five days have passed since the
subjugation of Laus. Eliwood asks Hector why his brother, Marquess Uther of
Ostia, hasn't moved into action yet; Hector explains that it is because of King
Desmond, ruler of Bern. Ostia is afraid that if Desmond finds a weak spot in
the Lycian border, it will attack at full force. Meanwhile, Marcus alluvasudden
barges in and tells Eliwood and Hector that Darin has attacked Caelin, home to
Lyndis and Hausen, and has took over the castle! They agree to go out and help
them.

The scene changes to Lyn's group. She and her followers (Sain, Kent, Florina
and Wil) have escaped Caelin in time but Hausen is still inside. Going back to
rescue him seems hopeless, as there are Laus soldiers everywhere. However, Kent
says that rumors are floating that Eliwood's group is around somewhere. Wil
offers to go find them, but Florina would like to go more. She eventually
convinces Lyn and gets the job.

Bauker, the enemy leader who is in command of the Laus force, orders his bowmen
to shoot her out of the skies. She spots Eliwood, but is assaulted by the
archers. You will unlock another "anime" scene. She manages to avoid trouble,
and Eliwood decides to help out Lyn. Bauker notices Eliwood's group and orders
for an attack.

You must bench two characters in this Chapter. I recommend sitting out Marcus
for the rest of the game, as he is the worst character in the entire game. I
would also choose Bartre, but if you're playing through Hector's route I
recommend keeping him in. Matthew is also a good candidate for warming up the
castle.

Erk will talk to you this time when the battle starts. Leave a couple of units
to guard Merlinus. I recommend leaving Dorcas, Matthew, and Guy there. Have
everyone else advance south. Meanwhile, over at Lyn's group, have Lyn buy a
Steel Sword and Kent buy an Iron/Steel Lance. Have Sain and Wil move west, and
have the other Caelin guys follow. Let Sain and Kent take care of the two
Mercenaries; one drops a Horseslayer. Then quickly Visit the village before the
enemy Thief reaches it. You'll get a Heavy Spear. Have Lyn's group go west to
meet Eliwood's group.

Let Florina get a lot of action over towards the west, as many enemies use
swords. Lowen and Oswin will be helpful here too. Remember to take advantage of
the forest's evasion and defense bonuses! Save the southwest village for a Red
Gem, which you can sell for a bit of money. Have characters that could use
weapon upgrades go east to the shops while everyone else heads northeast to the
boss.

Brigands will eventually show up in the northwest corner and will try to attack
Merlinus. However, if you have Matthew or Guy there then they should pose no
problem. There are only two Brigands up there, so when they are gone have the
guards (aside from Dorcas/Bartre) go south to join the main group.

Keep advancing with the main group up towards the boss. Lyn can talk with a ton
of people on this map, so try to get all of those conversations as well. Let
Oswin take the lead of your army, as most enemies do little or no damage to
him. Some enemies will pour out of the two Forts up there but you should be
able to handle them. Also, a lone Brigand will appear in the bottom right
corner.

Have Dorcas, with his Iron Axe equipped, stand on the house right below
Merlinus. A total of eight Cavaliers will arrive and try to kill Merlinus, but
they all have lances equipped. Chop them up. If Dorcas gets seriously injured,
have him use a Vulnerary. Make sure to buy some items for characters, such as a
Steel Sword for Guy and a Javelin for Sain. I got Slim Lances for Sain and
Lowen as well. Eliwood and Lyn should also have Steel Swords.

The boss, despite his high level and stats, isn't tough at all. Just have
Hector kill him with the Wolf Beil in one turn. Once you've purchased
everything you need, go ahead and have Eliwood conquer Caelin castle. But the
battle isn't over yet. Eliwood introduces Hector to Lyn, and Lyn and her squad
say hello to you after the battle.

In Castle Caelin, Hausen tries to convince Darin to give in to Eliwood.
However, Ephidel appears and cuts him down, just like he did to Helman. Darin
realizes he has no choice but to keep following Nergal, and leaves Caelin with
Ephidel.
