1. ABOUT THE GAME
Introduction
------------
After several years of absence, the legendary anime icon
Astro Boy appears in this 2D sidescroller made by Hitmaker and
Treasure. As expected from a Treasure co-developed product, the game
has easy-to-learn controls and gameplay, excellent graphics and
sound, and high replay value. The game stages take on two forms -
action and shooting. Other than punch and kick, Astro can also use
his finger beam, arm cannon and the machine gun to defeat the bad
guys during the action stages. As a bonus for the fans, several
characters created by Osamu Tezuka also appear in the game. The
characters will help Astro giving him power-ups and hints.
Story Background
----------------
In the near future, various robots were developed to help
the humans. Among these robots is Astro, the first robot made with
a 'soul'. With the guidance of Doctor O'Shay, Astro uses his
abilities to rescue people from danger. Astro hopes to know the
secrets surrounding his identity while meeting other people.
Unfortunately, the humans are already losing confidence with the
robots. Disasters and mistakes are usually blamed on the robots.
Although the future looks bleak, Astro doesn't lose hope. He still
dreams of a world where humans and robots could co-exist peacefully.

2. GAME SYSTEM
Menu Navigation
---------------
Booting up the game:

able to select the language of the text display. You can change the
language setting in the options menu later. The languages are:
ENGLISH

JAPANESE
Starting a new game:
To start a new game, select an empty slot. Use the D-pad to
enter your initials. Yes, you can use SEX and other similar words.
After entering your name, the game will let you pick a difficulty
setting.
EASY
NORMAL
HARD
I strongly recommend beginners to pick the easy difficulty first.
Anyway, the obvious differences are:
EASY
a. You start with thirty EX/super points.
b. The maximum EX point is 99.
c. Enemies have regular speed, stun-recovery and attack power.
As a reference:
- 2,000 damage from a regular-sized "flunky" physical hit.
- 1,000 damage from a regular-sized "flunky" projectile hit.
d. The EX meter fills up even during an EX attack at
a normal rate.
NORMAL
a. You start with five EX/super points.
b. The maximum EX point is five.
c. Enemies now move faster, stun-recovery improved, and doubled
attack and defense ratings. As a reference:
- 5,000 damage from a regular-sized "flunky" physical hit.
- 3,000 damage from a regular-sized "flunky" projectile hit.
d. Astro doesn't recover life points in some stages.
e. Some enemies have a different attack pattern.
f. Increase in number of enemies.
g. The EX meter fills up even during an EX attack at 1/2 rate.
HARD
a. You start with three EX/super points.
b. The maximum EX point is three.
c. Enemies now move faster than before, stun-recovery improved,
and quadrupled attack and defense ratings. Some bosses can kill
Astro in one hit. As a reference:
- 10,000 damage from a regular-sized "flunky" physical hit.
- 6,000 damage from a regular-sized "flunky" projectile hit.
d. Astro doesn't recover life points in some stages.
e. Lower base score for Astro's attacks.
f. Some enemies have a different attack pattern.
g. Increase in number of enemies.
h. The EX meter doesn't fill up during an EX attack.
Copying a save game:
Highlight COPY, select the data you want to copy,
then pick an empty slot.
Deleting a save game:
Highlight DELETE and select the data you want to delete.
PAUSE Menu:
To access the PAUSE menu, press START during gameplay. You
will be given several choices. They are:
CONTINUE
STAGE SELECT (!)
RETRY
EXIT
CONTINUE is self-explanatory. The STAGE SELECT option is
only available during the "Rebirth" play. This will bring you to
the Stage Select screen. RETRY will bring you back to the start
of the stage and will reset your score. EXIT will bring you back
to the title screen.
OPTIONS Menu:
You can access the OPTIONS menu from the title screen. The
available items are:
TEZUKA/EXTENDED/ULTIMATE CHARACTER LIST
HIGH SCORE
SOUND TEST (!)
EVENT TEST (!)
LANGUAGE
DELETE ALL DATA
The character list will show the characters you have unlocked
for the Omega Factor. Press left or right to scroll the available
characters. Press up or down to view the different character
drawings or portraits. Pessing 'A' will give you a description
about that character. Initially, the character list is called "Tezuka
Character List". After finishing the Rebirth part, it will now
become the "Extended Character List". The extended list contains
more information. You'll get the "Ultimate Character List" after
finishing the game once on normal or hard difficulty.
Selecting the high score option will bring you to a new menu.
FROM BEGINNING
STAGE
BLOCK
The "FROM BEGINNING" will record the best time and score you
got for a particular difficulty level if you successfully finish a
new game without any continues or retries. Unfortunately, this only
records the time and scores for the 'Birth' part. The "STAGE" records
the time and score for a particular stage. The "BLOCK" keeps track
of the score and time for a particular block in a stage. The records
for the block play are easier to beat when you already have the stage
select option. You can check the records for the Birth-Rebirth play
by pressing up or down.
The sound and event tests are unlocked when you finish the
game once. The sound test allows you to play the different BGM and
sound effects used in the game. The event test lets you to view or
watch events you have previously seen in the game. It will take a lot
of replaying to get all the events because of the requirements.
Stay away from the "DELETE ALL DATA" option. This will erase
everything, including your high scores. The only use of this option
is to remove your data if you're planning to sell your copy.
Controls
--------
Punch - Press the 'B' button. You can attack four times
consecutively. The fourth attack becomes a kick.
Punching is disabled during the shooting stages.
Kick - Press down+B. Regular enemies kicked by Astro are
knocked back. Enemies in the path of the kicked
enemy are also knocked away. Kicking is disabled
during the shooting stages.
Finger Beam - Press up+B. Astro's basic long range attack. During
the shooting stages, the command for the finger beam
is just the 'B' button.
Arm Cannon - Press the 'R' button. This uses up one EX/Super
point. The arm cannon is Astro's strongest attack.
It damages enemies and nullifies incoming projectile.
When Astro is hit while performing the arm cannon,
Astro will receive damage and the arm cannon attack
will immediately stop. During the shooting stages,
Astro can move while performing the arm cannon.
Machine Gun - Press the 'L' button. This uses up one EX/Super
point. The machine gun damages enemies and stuns
them for a limited time. It also nullifies all enemy
projectiles in the screen. During the shooting stages,
Astro can move while performing the machine gun. Astro
gains temporary invincibility during the attack.
EX Dash - Press A+B. This uses up one EX/Super point. You can
direct Astro by pressing the D-pad while performing
the EX Dash. Astro gains temporary invincibility
during the attack.
Jump - Press the 'A' button. Jumping is disabled during the
shooting stages.
Jet - Press the 'A' button while in the air. You can direct
Astro by pressing the D-pad simultaneously with the
'A' button. The number of times you can "jet" is
determined by your jet level. Jetting allows you to
go past enemies and projectiles. Take note that Astro
is vulnerable during the initial animation when he is
rotating. During the shooting stages, Astro can jet
as many times as you want.
Dash - Press the direction pad left or right two times. You
can also dash while in the air. Dashing also allows
you to go past enemies and projectiles. For the sake
of clarity, jet = dash.
To skip the text or pause the game, press START.
To fast forward the text or dialogue, press and hold SELECT.
To view the Omega Factor, press SELECT.
Score, Bonus, Multiplier and Combos
-----------------------------------
Each of Astro's attack has a base score. Check the "Power-Up"
section for the different values. In order to get a better score,
you need to use combos to increase the score multiplier. The score
multiplier is located at the upper-right portion of the screen and
the maximum value is 10. To combo, you must hit an opponent
consecutively within a given time-frame. Astro is also allowed to
cancel his moves just like in fighting games. Check the data below
for the details. A "O" symbol indicates a possible follow-up and "-"
means a follow-up is not possible.
B down+B up+B L R A+B dash
------------------------------------------------------------------
B O O O O O O O
Bx2 O O O O O O O
Bx3 O O O O O O O
Bx4 - - O O O O O
down+B - - O O O O O
up+B - - - O O O -
L - - - - - - -
R - - - - - - -
A+B - - - - - - -
------------------------------------------------------------------
As you can see from the table, Astro can cancel most of his basic
moves to his EX or super moves - arm cannon, machine gun and EX Dash.
All of the EX moves are usually used as combo finishers. A dash cancel
is needed to get a higher score multiplier. Please look at the following
sample combos for a better explanation.
Sample Combos:
B, B, B, B
Astro's basic 4-hit combo.
Score multiplier: 4
B, B, B, B, up+B, L/R/A+B
This combo is very similar to the first one.
Since the kick will send the enemy flying
towards the end of the screen, you can use
the finger beam to continue the combo. You
can then cancel it to one of your EX moves.
Score multiplier: 6
B, L/R/A+B
This is the basic combo you can do during
the shooting stages.
Score multiplier: 2
(B, jet) x n, L/R/A+B
A combo you can use during the shooting
stages. Make sure to press and hold down the
'B' button.
Score multiplier: 10
B, B, B, dash, B, B, B, B, up+B, L/R/A+B
First sample combo that uses the dash. Take
note that you don't have to wait for the
dash animation to finish. Press the 'B'
button to stop the dash and continue with
the combo. As an insurance, use the machine
gun to stun your opponents first.
Score multiplier: 9
(B, B, B, B, dash) x n, B, B, B, B, up+B, L/R/A+B
A semi-infinite combo you can use against
some bosses. The combo is limited by the
number of dashes Astro can perform. Make sure
that the dash will bring you to the other
side of the boss.
Score multiplier: 10
jump, B, B, B, B, up+a, B, B, B, B, up+B, L/R/A+B
A sample air combo that you can use against
some bosses like the Spider Robot. Take note
that the first attack should be made at the
peak of your jump. You might have some
difficulties performing the complete combo.
So, try skipping some of the attacks.
Score multiplier: 10
Other than the score you get from defeating enemies, you also
gain some special bonuses at the end of every stage. This bonuses
will help you gain better scores. They are:
Stage Clear Bonus : Finish a stage without any retries.
Stage # x 5,000
Time Bonus : The faster you finish a stage, the higher
this becomes. This is based on a time limit
set by the game.
Remaining Life Bonus : Remaining life of Astro / 2
The maximum life bonus is 50,000.
Remaining EX Bonus : Easy and Normal
Remaining EX point of Astro x 500
Hard
Remaining EX point x 25,000
No Damage Bonus : Finish a stage without getting hit.
You'll get 20,000 points.
No EX Usage Bonus : Finish a stage without using an EX move.
You'll get 25,000 points.
During the game, you'll receive some bonus points when you get a
heart when you have not received any damage.
Small heart = 10,000
Big heart = 30,000
Power-Up
--------

the various characters AND unlock them in his Omega Factor. An
unlocked character has a colored face in the Omega Factor. You will

3. WALKTHROUGH
Prologue (Stage 0-1 Science Ministry)
--------
Character: Dr. O'Shay
WARNING!: Pressing 'START' anytime during this stage will end the
tutorial. Check the "Events" section for additional info.
The game starts off with a boy named Tobio who was involved
in an accident. We then see a silhouette of a man who is at lost
because of Tobio's death. When the "boy" wakes up, a scientist
with a HUGE nose named Dr. O'Shay calls him Astro.
Dr. O'Shay will give you a short training session about
Astro's abilities. The training sessions are:
a. movement - Walk towards the right of the screen.
b. jump and jet - Jump and jet over the wall.
c. punch - Press the B button at least once.
d. finger beam - Perform the finger beam by pressing up+B.
e. kick - Press down+B at least once.
f. EX moves - Perform any of the EX moves at least once.
After the training, walk over to Dr. O'Shay and you will get him
for the Omega Factor. Power-up any of Astro's abilities. After that,
Dr. O'Shay will then give a short explanation regarding the Omega
Factor and Astro's abilities. Wato, Dr. O'Shay's assistant, will be
carried away by a group of enemies.
Chapter 1 "Metro City"
---------
Summary: Rescue Wato and find out the true purpose of the enemy.
Stage 1-1 Metro City
---------
The stage starts with Astro in Metro City. Upon landing,
Astro will see the bad guys leave the screen with Chiyoko.
Take note that these bad guys are the generic enemy fodder.
This is a straightforward stage. To advance, you need to
defeat the wave of enemies that will appear in the screen. At
the first screen, you can break the glass at the background
to get additional points. At the end of the stage, Astro can
collect a heart that will recover lost life points. A small
heart recovers 30,000 life points. In case you have a full life
meter, you'll get 10,000 points. Hearts also add to your EX
stock. This is especially useful in hard difficulty. A small
heart gives 3 EX points.
