Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits - Strategy Guide (Page 04)
Below are the cheat codes, hints and help for Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits - Strategy Guide (Page 04).
When trying to beat the normal version of Hong Kong even inexperienced
players shouldn't have too much of a problem but figuring out the right way
to beat the reverse course time can be for anybody.
First move one square to the right and drill down until standing next to the
two-piece blue block. Destroy it as well as the yellow block left of it (not
the one beneath it) and quickly drill down until you've destroyed the single
red block (also destroy the yellow block to your right to speed up the next
section a bit). This way the first clock you just seemed to pass up on falls
directly into your arms without losing any time waiting for the X-blocks to
fall prey to a chain-reaction.
Now, of course, pick up the second clock, too.
From where you picked up the latter one you should drill straight down and
destroy the huge blue block to your left instead of the huge yellow block
(which can easily happen accidentally) and nab the third clock.
Now drill down until you're left of the next guarded goodie.
Move right under the big X-block covering the clock, destroy all blocks that
support it and once again drill deeper into the level right beneath the clock
so you catch it without wasting any precious time.
Next work your way down towards the next clock so you can pick it up coming
from the right, move left, down, right, down and grab the last clock also by
coming from the right and from there just try to drill to the exit as quickly
as possible.

This is by far the best level in Time Attack Driller in my opinion (although
it highly resembles a level in the original Mr Driller) as it is really well-
designed without any long drilling sections but stuffed with "escalators"
made of X-blocks you have to ride down. Since these lifts are easy to find
and to reach Italy shouldn't frustrate anybody so anyone can enjoy it.
1 m - 100m:
Drill straight down until you can collect the first clock in the first lift.
Stay there until the lift comes to a halt, then enter the second lift and
repeat this for the third escalator. Once it stops destroy the sole blue
block and wait for the next lift to come by your storey to enter it. Repeat
this with the next lift after drilling a huge red block and leave it quickly
once your next to a big blue block leading to a lift somewhat formed like a
can (just show some imagination :p). Right when this ride fades away you have
to start drilling downwards as soon as possible so you won't get crushed by
an X-block. You have just left behind the first 100 m of Italy.
101 m - 200 m:
Move down into the space between the two lifts and quickly nab the one-
second-clock, then enter the other escalator. After landing walk to the right
to pick up another clock and to fall down to the next lift you have to enter.
When leaving this ride you will see a nice construction consisting of a
disappearing huge blue block and some red blocks stuck within it now forming
a path for you to reach the clock on the far-left. Just don't get too greedy
and wait for the next red block to have fallen down before moving on so you
don't get crushed.
Now let yourself fall down, nab the next item and move to where the big blue
block on your left side is. Wait for the X-blocks to lead the way, jump after
them and enter the next escalator leading you to another one after a short
trip which ALSO leads you to another lift and, guess what, you'll be taken to
just another escalator that will finally bring you to the end of the stage.

So you've finally made it to the icing on the Time Attack cake. Japan is
longer and more intricate than any other level and it contains nearly every
element of the other courses but it definitely is possible to beat in no time.
1 m - 100m:
Drill down until you're standing on top of a big yellow block, move to the
right and drill down into the big X-block tube. Move to its left end and get
to its bottom where you have to quickly cross two gaps before the crystal
blocks disappear.
Next you have to get under the right-most lone X-block and drill down until
you're standing on the crystal block. Move beneath the other lone X-block and
once again move down only stopping when you reach the crystal block. From
here you have to move to the right in order to nab the clock, destroy the big
blue block and jump into the small metal block-"can" waiting for the next
clock to come down before you jump out again. Here you mustn't lose any time
as otherwise the single metal block will either crush down on you or block
your way.
Destroy the red, yellow, green and red block on your way down to the next
item and to the end of this stage.
101 m - 200 m:
This section now (only the part featuring the crystal blocks) can't be easily
described and probably I haven't found out the perfect way by now (or maybe I
have but analyzing every possible path here is way too time-consuming and
frustrating) but in my opinion you should alternate between column 3 and 4
(counting from the left) until you've made it through the green-yellow-
section.
Then move right and down to the next clock, destroy the single yellow block
and the huge blue block beneath you and the big yellow block covering the
second clock of this section in order to nab it. Drill through the blue and
the yellow block under your feet, grab the third clock, destroy the yellow
block beneath you as well as the blue block and (who would've thought?) pick
up the clock near-by. Now drill down before the big yellow block is affected
by a chain-reaction until you're standing one row above the next clock (and
two columns two the left), move one square to the right and after the blue
blocks disappear you can safely grab the clock. Move a bit deeper and you
will find the last clock of this stage.
201 m - 300 m:
First you simply have to pick up four clocks by following a path of big
blocks between them. After that, move on to a big X-block with an opening on
the far-right leading you to a small metal block-platform (and a clock) that
you have to ride. Then destroy the red block, enter the second lift and
repeat for the third lift.
The next long section plays a lot like China meaning that you'll encounter
small areas surrounded by X-blocks that can be left by using flip- and turn-
blocks.
In the first are you need to destroy every normal block over and under the
two single X-blocks (you may leave alone the green and the blue block on top
of the left-most brown block) so you can grab the turn block. To speed up
this part a bit you should only destroy the first normal block under an X-
block and then a block under the other one before drilling more blocks so
both brown blocks start shaking (and thus indicate that they're about to fall
down) nearly at the same time. When the area has turned by 90 degrees,
destroy the green block beneath you so you don't get crushed.
Now destroy the big yellow block and the four differently coloured single
blocks near the flip block, to make it reachable, and pick it up.
In the next section you should make sure not to drill down too far to the
right. Instead move down in the third column (counting from the left) and
pick up the crystal. If you don't do it as I told you, you are likely to get
stuck next to the single X-block.
Now all you have to do to complete Time Attack Driller mode is collecting the
flip block and move down to the end of the level (preferably near the centre
because of the big blocks there).
----------------------------4.3.2 Records------------------------------------
I will only post one record for every level as there is no difference in
difficulty for achieving a certain time either in a normal level or in its
reverse counterpart.
For now I only post my records with Susumu since I haven't played Time Attack
with any other character yet.
Probably I'll add times for them in the future, too, but as for now I
consider this section as complete.

----------------------------4.4 Dristone Driller---------------------------
In Dristone Driller (being an exclusive to the European and Japanese versions)
you (once again) try to reach the bottom of a randomly-generated cave trying
not to run out of air by collecting oxygen tanks.
But that's basically all that Dristone Driller has in common with other play
modes.
A minor difference to other modes is that only Susumu is playable but besides
this restriction there are two main unique elements:
First of all air is not reduced automatically as time goes by but only when
drilling. Drilling through a normal block (no matter what its size may be)
costs 1 percentage point of air, drilling through an X-block only costs 5 (1
for every drill at an X-block).
The other main element are the Dristones which the mode is named after.
These gems either lie around from the start or hide in normal blocks
unveiling after you've drilled the right block. Collecting one of these gives
you one of various special abilities that can be accessed via the Dristones-
menu acting as an inventory (that can hold up to 20 Dristones).
Similar to Pressure Driller there is only one way to die which here is
running out of air (here meaning to have -1% of air). Being crushed only
steals 20 percentage points of air.
Running out of air means instant death so no extra lives here.
Usually Dristone Driller is played rather slowly and thoughtful. Only move
fast if you have to take a path that starts off a chain-reaction. Otherwise
plan every drill, wait for all block to fall down and cause chain-reactions
and simply chill out.
Any miles traversed in this play mode count towards the shopping points.
I cannot give a real walkthrough for this mode as both the blocks and the air
capsules and Dristones are placed more or less randomly but I wrote down
ratings and recommendations for every Dristone and I can help you by telling
you what blocks can be found in every stage so you can plan ahead as to what
items you should use and which one you should save for later.
Note that not every kind of special block listed for a certain stage has to
appear every time you play.
Also note that drilling the very last stage-end-block when being down to 0%
air will not kill you.

----------------------------4.4.2 Dristone List------------------------------
Dristones come in four different colours (not related to the colours of the
normal blocks) each forming a group of different ability-granting gems:
Blue Dristones transform certain blocks into a different kind of block
(Except for Warp).
Green Dristones refill your air meter.
Red Dristones destroy certain blocks.
Yellow Dristones grant Sususmu certain abilities or bonuses.
Some Dristones only appear in later levels. E.g. I've only encountered Warp,
Stone Search, Air + 1%, Destroy H and Destroy V in China or in later levels
and the first level you get for example Destroy 1 and Change X in is France.
_______
Blue: |
Change B: Change all blocks of one colour to blue.
The in-game description should be self-explaining but you
should consider that the block colour which is changed to blue
is chosen randomly. At least you can be sure that the game
will always choose an on screen colour.
Just like the Destroy-Dristones (see red gems section below)
this item is best used with lots of single blue blocks on
screen otherwise it is relatively useless.
Special blocks cannot be turned into blue blocks.
As the Change-Dristones appear quite frequently you might
consider using more than one at the same time to create really
big blocks making for some easy chain-reactions.
My personal rating: ***OO
Change C: Change all blocks of one colour to Crystal blocks.
This is just the same as Change B only that it changes blocks
to Crystal blocks instead of blue.
As the Crystal blocks disappear after a short amount of time
you can't use this Dristone to create large blocks but on the
other hand you can use it to destroy blocks that are out of
your reach.
Basically you can regard this item as a random Destroy-
Dristone.
Just use it whenever there are lots of single or double blocks
and you don't want to waste any better Dristones.
My personal rating: **OOO and a half
Change G: Change all blocks of one colour to green.
This is just the same as Change B only that it changes blocks
to green blocks instead of blue ones.
My personal rating: ***OO
Change R: Change all blocks of one colour to red.
This is just the same as Change B only that it changes blocks
to red blocks instead of blue ones.
My personal rating: ***OO
Change W: Change all blocks of one colour to white.
This is just the same as Change B only that it changes blocks
to white blocks instead of blue ones.
Just throw this one away as soon as your inventory gets near-
full. Like Change X this Dristone might be useful if you want
to deploy a Destroy-Dristone of the corresponding colour but
otherwise it only makes life harder. Using this item can
sometimes provoke unforeseen chain-reactions and generally you
want to have as few white blocks as possible as they always
fall down all the way and as they can't be destroyed by
forming big blocks.
Luckily this is the Dristone I've encountered the least so far.
My personal rating: *OOOO
Change X: Change all blocks of one colour to X-Blocks.
This is just the same as Change B only that it changes blocks
to X-blocks instead of blue ones.
Nearly the mother of all definitions of crap.
Who would want to change any blocks to X-Blocks? Might be
relatively useful in combination with a Destroy X-Dristone or
if you're desperately in need of an X-Block to destroy other
brown blocks but in this case you need to be lucky so the
right blocks are transformed because otherwise the situation
just gets worse.
My personal rating: *OOOO
Change Y: Change all blocks of one colour to yellow.
This is just the same as Change B only that it changes blocks
to yellow blocks instead of blue ones.
My personal rating: ***OO
Warp: Restart the current stage with all Dristones currently held.
When you use this mother of all Dristones you are brought back
to the beginning of the current level (i.e. to 0 m) keeping
all Dristones you had when you used Warp.
No matter when you get this Dristone you can consider yourself
lucky.
Of course you'd be best advised to warp only when resigning
which probably only happens in the late game but if you get it
early when still having lots of air you can just keep it for
later use.
Air supply is not refilled when warping but you keep all
Yellow-Dristone-effects, even the Max Up-effect.
After warping you'll be in back again in rather easy areas
with more big blocks, less X-blocks and easy to reach air
tanks plus you're probably equipped with lots of useful gems.
UPDATE: After playing Dristone Driller for quite some time
I've realized that Warp isn't nearly as good as I thought
Before: The first few levels are so easy and short that you
shouldn't have any problems beating them quickly and later
levels rarely provide many air capsules in the first stages
but rather in the mid-range-stages and in addition two-colour-
stages are found solely in mid-range-stages so warping back to
the start without lots of air actually is more dangerous than
useful so I change my rating from ***** to:
My personal rating: *OOOO
(I know: That's really some big change of mind so you're
gladly invited to hate-spam me...don't take this too serious,
please ^^.)
_______
Green: |
Air + 1%: Recover 1% Air.
Works just like all other Air-Dristones but only refills one
percentage point of air (see Air + 5% below for more
information).
Extremely rare and extremely crappy.
My personal rating (and hopefully everyone's rating here):
*OOOO
Air + 5%: Recover 5% Air.
Works like a quarter-air-capsule for the go.
What might easily be overlooked is that this gem does not
really recover 5 percent of air but 5 percentage points of air
meaning that if you've enlarged your air tank to e.g. 120% and
then use this Dristone you still only get 5 percentage points
back and not 5% of 120 which would be 6 percentage points.
Use it only when being dramatically low on air or when your
inventory is full and you don't want to waste any other
Dristones.
My personal rating: **OOO
Air + 10%: Recover 10% Air.
This is just the same as 2 Air + 5%-Dristones combined into
one item.
Simply use it in the same situations as the smaller version.
My personal rating: ***OO
Air + 20%: Recover 20% Air.
This is just the same as 4 Air + 5%-Dristones combined into
one item.
Simply use it in the same situations as the smaller versions.
My personal rating: ****O

Destroy 1: Destroy all blocks within a 1 block radius.
This destroys all blocks directly around you (a maximum of 8
blocks). Only somewhat useful when being surrounded by lots of
blocks and at least one or two of them being an X-block.
My personal rating: *OOOO and a half
Destroy 2: Destroy all blocks within a 2 block radius.
This destroys all blocks within a radius of two blocks around
you (a maximum of 24 blocks). Use it like Destroy 1 when being
surrounded by lots of single blocks and X-blocks.
It's a bit better than Destroy 1 but don't get too excited
just yet...
My personal rating: **OOO
Destroy 3: Destroy all blocks within a 3 block radius.
This destroys all blocks being three squares or less near you
(a maximum of 48 blocks). The advanced version of Destroy 1
and 2 is way more useful than the smaller versions as it can
dispose of a lot more blocks and also over a greater distance.
Use it when being surrounded by many blocks, mainly with lots
of X-blocks and single blocks.
My personal rating: ***OOO
Destroy A: Destroy all blocks on screen. Air will be reduced 50%.
As the in-game description already says this destroy all
blocks currently on screen at the cost of 50% of your air
(percent this time, no percentage points).
When being down to 0% air you don't lose any air.
You'd be advised to use this gem when already being low on air
and especially when seeing an air capsule or knowing that one
is nearby without having enough air reserves to reach it the
usual way.
Furthermore you better not waste this on a two-colour
stage or on lots of big blocks.
My personal rating: ***OO and a half
Destroy B: Destroy all blue blocks on screen.
As the in-game description already says this item destroys all
blue blocks that are visible at the time it is used.
While this Dristone might not be too powerful it still is very
useful and, luckily, it appears rather often. The best time to
use it is when there are lots of blue single blocks on screen
but when being in a stage without blue blocks or when you are
in direct reach of a big blue block this gem is pretty useless.
My personal rating: ***OO
Destroy G: Destroy all green blocks on screen.
This is just the same as Destroy B only that it affects green
blocks instead of blue ones.
My personal rating: ***OO
