1-1 Gameplay
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 3 modes in Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey.

1. ARCADE MODE

Each team has 2 wingmen, 1 center, and 1 goaltender on the ice
at all times. After fights, the player is replaced by the next
man on the roster until the end of the period.

Players can use power shots (shoot + turbo) for flaming net shots
or goaltender destruction shots. If a goalie stops 6 consecutive
shots, he will become a brick wall for the next shot. Fights seem
to happen more often that the 1.5 average. As well, if one person
is down by one or more goals, the opponent's goaltender becomes
extremely dumbfounded to just about every shot you put his way.

2. SIMULATION MODE

Each team has 2 wingmen, 1 center, 2 defensemen, and 1 goaltender
on the ice unless their are penalties ongoing. By switching down
the player count, defensemen are removed from the roster.

Power shots, flaming nets, brick walls, and such are disabled.
The glowing puck can still be enabled however, considering that
FOX uses it! Goaltenders keep their usual IQ level at all times,
so dont expect to score every 20 to 30 seconds. Also, the
normal rink size is enabled, making the surface a lot larger.

3. PRACTICE MODE

This is actually a sub mode. After completing the one period
practice, you will be rated based on your performance.

	-SUCKER lolipop: You did horrible.
	-SILVER medal: Not bad.
	-GOLD medal: Pretty good.
	-SILVER trophy: Very good.
	-GOLD trophy: Outstanding!

	OFFENSE:
In arcade mode, this is a 3 on 0 game with 2 goaltenders.
In simulation, the gameplay changes and there can be up
to 5 players. Your player is rated for goals and
		assists scored.

	DEFENSE:
1 on 3 with 2 goaltenders. You are rated for goals
scored, and checks made, but the shots do not not
neccessarily need to be on target.

	SHOOTING:
1 on 0 with 2 goaltenders. You are rated for goals
		scored.

*NOTE: You can play this mode as 1 on 1 if you have a
	controller in port 3.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1-2 Options
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. GAME PLAY MODE

	A. ARCADE
		See "Gameplay/ARCADE" (DEFAULT)
	B. SIMULATION
		See "Gameplay/SIMULATION"

2. RINK SURFACE

	A. ARCADE (DEFAULT)
Ice surface is fairly small for a harder hitting,
		higher scoring game.
	B. SIMULATION
Ice surface is NHL regulation size,
for more space for people to skate.

3. TEAM SIZE

	A. 3 (DEFAULT)
		3 on 3 hockey with 2 goaltenders.
	B. 4
		4 on 4 hockey with 2 goaltenders.
	C. 5
		5 on 5 hockey with 2 goaltenders.

4. DIFFICULTY

	A. VERY EASY
	B. EASY (DEFAULT)
	C. MEDIUM
	D. HARD
	E. VERY HARD

5. PERIOD LENGTH

If you selected ARCADE mode, you can choose from
	1:30 2:00 (DEFAULT) 2:30 3:00

If you selected SIMULATION mode, you can choose from
	5:00 10:00 (DEFAULT) 15:00 20:00

6. FIGHTING (DEFAULT ON)

You can turn fighting on or off. Fighting during the game happens
when one players aggression meter tops out. The winner of the fight
gets a faceoff in his opponents zone. The winning and losing
players are automatically relegated to the penalty box.

	CONTROL

	HEAVY PUNCH:
Press the 'pass' button. This is slower
			but more powerful.

	LIGHT PUNCH:
Press the 'shoot' button. This is faster
			but less powerful.

	HOLD AND DOUBLE PUNCH:
Press the shoot and pass buttons simultaneously.
You will pick up your opponent and hit him
			in the face twice.

	UPPERCUT:
Press the shoot and turbo buttons simultaneously.
You will deliver an uppercut, which does the
most damage, but leaves you open for counters.

7. PENALTIES (DEFAULT OFF)

OFF: No penalties. The only stoppage in play comes from a goal,
or when the goalie hangs on to the puck too long.

ON: All penalties. Icing, 2 line passes, offsides, xchecking
(crosschecking), hooking, tripping are called when
	      appropriate (BUT NOT ALWAYS).

NO ICING/OFFSIDES: All penalties are called, but Icing the puck and
offsides or 2 line passes are ignored.

8. PLAYER SWITCHING (DEFAULT MANUAL)

MANUAL: You must press the R button to switch players. If a
player on your team has the puck, he will move by
himself, but you control if he can pass or shoot.

AUTOMATIC: You become the player on your team who has the puck.

9. LINE CHANGES (DEFAULT MANUAL)

MANUAL: You must press start during the game and turn on
line changes during a stoppage in play. This allows
a new line to get on the ice.

AUTOMATIC: The computer makes line changes at its own discretion.

10. PLAY SPEED: (DEFAULT NORMAL)

NORMAL: Faceoffs and pre-game flag waving happen.
FAST: Faceoffs faster, no pre game flags.

11. PUCK STREAK: (DEFAULT ON)

ON: The puck has a glowing streak when shot.
OFF: The puck has no streak.

12. PLAYER FATIGUE

ON: The players tire after periods of
		skating, hitting or fighting.
OFF: The players play like superhumans! :-)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
1-3 Moves
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. SKATING

Use the analog joystick (center) or the digital joypad (left)
to move the skater. The longer they continue in one
direction, the faster they can go. Both are active at all times,
so you can switch between the two controls at any time.

2. SHOOTING

Use the 'A' button (blue) or the 'Z' trigger (bottom) to
shoot the puck. The time you spend holding the button
	determines the type of shot.

	-WRIST SHOT
Press and release the button quickly. A wrist shot
		is very fast, but low.

	-SLAP SHOT
Hold the button and release. A Slap shot is
even faster, and usually goes high.

	-POWER SHOT
Hold the shoot button, then press the turbo button,
and release both. A power shot is recognized by a
flaming puck. If you cant get it to work, trying
pressing both shoot and turbo simultaneously. If
the shot does not result in a goal, the turbo will
be replenished in roughly 5 seconds.

	-GOALTENDER DESTRUCTION
Perform a power shot directly at the goaltender so
it hits the bottom middle space between his pads.
If performed correctly, the goaltender will hit the back
of the net, and the boards, basically
		'digging his own grave'.

	-TURBO BOOST
Press the bottom 'C' button. Your player will
burst ahead with a blue streak. You can tell if
turbo is available by looking at for a red filled circle
		on your status bar.

	-PASS
Press the 'B' button. Your player will use his
stick to pass the puck to another player.

	-ONE TIMER
Press the shoot and pass buttons simultaneously.
You will pass to another player who is already
about to shoot the puck. This is one of the best
		ways to score.

	-SPIN-O-RAMA
Twirl the control stick or pad in circles
		(either direction) and shoot.
Your player will spin extremely fast and shoot the puck.

3. OTHER MOVES

	-CROSS CHECK
Press the left 'C' button. Your player will use
his stick to injure other players by holding both
		ends and pushing horizontally.

	-TRIP
Press the right 'C' button. Your player will
extend his stick low to trip a player.

	-HOOK
Press the top 'C' button. Your player will attempt
to grab another player with the curved end of his stick.

	-DIVE
Press the shoot and pass buttons simultaneously.
Your player will drop horizontally to the ice to
		stop a low shot.

	-DROP
Press the shoot button. Your player will drop
to his knees to block a shot.

	-STEAL
Press the pass button. Your player will extend
his stick to take away the puck.

	-SWITCH
Press the R button (behind). You will switch
		to another player.

1-4 Gameplay Tricks
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

-The crew at Midway/Williams/Atari really went nuts on the 'arcade'
perspective of WG3D. As a result, the goaltenders are no better
than 10 year olds. There are several methods for guaranteed goals,
although none of them are as sure fire as the infamous EA NHL
	 series glitches.

	 1. Run straight at one of the goalposts. At the moment the
goaltender tries a poke check, shoot for an easy goal between
the legs. This requires good timing.

	 2. If you have a loose analog joystick, pretend you're a russian
hotshot and wave your stick back and forth (left and right)
as fast as you can. If you keep on course for the post,
chances are good it will go in. I managed 40 goals in 2
minutes once...although my controller is now really loose.

-If you play the 'SHOOTING' practice mode, just keep firing away.
More often then not, you will get exactly 6 goals. Ta da.

-Use the power shot often. If you hit the goalie low and
dead on, he will normally hit the back boards with a thump.

1-5 Codes
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

-At the "Options" screen, press the "Z" button (trigger) and
an advertisement will float along the bottom of the screen.

-You can see the game designers by continuing to press
the "A" button at the title screen until you see the words
'3D HOCKEY' along the top of the screen.

-Using the same method as above, if you keep pressing the A button
and observe the computerized games, you will eventually be able to
 watch the 'puck cam' mode.

-If you hold down the 'L' and 'R' shoulder buttons while choosing your
player on a particular team, and use the control stick, you move around
the screen as well as the player. I have no idea what this does.

-You can pick a defenseman to play as! Not much of a code, but if you
set the game to 'simulation' 4 or 5 player and select a team, press down
until you select the bottom player. Keep pressing and your defensemen
will miraculously show up! Chelios is one power guy!

-The infamous "16 bit register" code:

At the options screen, you can activate a 16 bit register,
which shows 16 zero's along the bottom of the screen.
Each one of these can be changed to show a 1 instead of a
zero, but we need help finding out how to do it. Heres
how to change the first 8. Each one has a different
effect on the game. If you can find how to activate bits
that I dont already know (11,12,13,14,15,16), please
	email me!

1000000000000000 Hold "Down C" and press "R".
			Effect: BIG HEADS

0100000000000000 Hold "Down C" and press "R". Repeat.
			Effect: BIGGER HEADS

			Effect: CRUNCHED PLAYERS
				SMALL ANNOUNCER

0000010000000000 Hold "Up C" and press "R" (2x)
			Effect: TALL PLAYERS
				SMALL ANNOUNCER

0000001000000000 Hold "L" and press "Left C" 9x.
			Effect: ACTIVATE CODE DURING GAME
				  FOR AUTOMATIC 1-0 LOSS

0000000100000000 Hold "L" and press "Down C" 2x, "Up C" 2x,
			"Down C" 2x, "Right C" 2x, "Down C"

Effect: Switch to "Team Stats" Screen. Press "Up C" 10 times.
You can now pick 2 teams to modify. Select wisely...you cannot
trade players FROM your selected teams. Press Left or right to
switch teams, press A to confirm. Upon finishing, you will see
2 team rosters listed. Press up or down to select a player from
your personal team, and left or right to select a player from any
NHL squad. Press the B Button to switch teams to trade with.
Press Start when completed, and fill out second roster. Now, for
as long as you have the game on (or have a memory card) the team
you modified will have the players you selected. Because most
of the RAM is already used to display the faces on the teams, you
will encounter slight loading times when shifting through teams
	with altered rosters.

"Ahh..how does the Canucks armed with Mogilny, Federov,
	and Bure sound to you?"

0000000010000000 Hold "L" and press "Right C", "Left C", "Left C",
			"Right C", "Down C", "Up C", "Up C", "Down C",
			"Left C", "Right C", "Right C", "Left C",
			"Right C", "Left C"

Effect: Almost every hit in the game results in a fight! This blatant
avoidance of NHL guidelines brings the fight average up to around
	30 fights/game. ^_^

0000000001000000 Hold "L" and press "Right C"
			"Left C" "Left C". Repeat 3x.
Effect: WILLIAMS, 99ERS TEAM USA, AND
				 TEAM CANADA AVAILABLE

------------------------------------------------------------
1-6 Errors/ Peculiarities
------------------------------------------------------------

-Not all the players could fit into this game. Therefore, there
are 17 players on a team (including 2 goaltenders). However,
not all their faces could make it. Players who did not make it
have an NHLPA logo instead. On the ice, they assume a default
face (unknown) This could be for space concerns, or more likely:
they could not obtain a picture. Considering they managed to
put their own faces in, I doubt Midway/Williams/Atari faced the
	former.

	Affected players:

Ottawa is the most affected: I've named one line the
"Who the Hell are they" line. 3/5 players are without
	pictures. :)

	Lehtinen -Dallas Stars
	Bertuzzi -New York Islanders
	Alfredsson -Ottawa Senators
	Radek Bonk -Ottawa Senators
	Mccleary -Ottawa Senators
	O'neill -Hartford Whalers
	Saku Koivu -Montreal Canadiens
	Satan -Edmonton Oilers
	Yachmenev -Los Angeles Kings
	Jan Coloun -San Jose Sharks

-Some players have abbreviated or mispelled names. Look for the
	* (asterisk) beside their names in this FAQ. If the players
whole name is bracketed ([]) then it is showing the correct name.

-Even in simulation mode, the winner of a fight gets the
	faceoff in their opponents zone..

-I'm pretty sure ALL players are rated, but however,
there is no way to determine the ratings of any defensemen
in this game. Also, some players are in the
	incorrect ice positions.

-Sorry fanatics, the fatality rumor was put to rest!

-The Puck Cam is available on the computer demo...anybody
figure out how to get it for human action?

------------------------------------------------------------
1-7 Wish List
------------------------------------------------------------

There are some obvious problems to this otherwise great game..hopes and
comments for a new version are as follows.

-Player Jerseys need to be fixed. I want to see higher res textures,
shoulder designs, official team number fonts, name on the back, numbers
on the back and side...make it look like a real jersey.

And COME ON!, get the rangers and penguins jerseys right...

-Face graphics could use an overhaul. Each player could have
their cheek structures at least a LITTLE bit closer to norm,
at the cost of altering a few vertex values.

-Body figures could use one or more of the following:

a) Body rehauls. The skating is perfect, but the guys all look
5' 9 with an lindros physique.

b) More polygons. With some more microcode, slight tinkering, etc.,
they should be able to add at least 25% more polygons per player,
and perhaps up the 5 on 5 screen rate.

-This is more of long term speculation, but using the DD drive could be
a good idea. It would certainly help out on all the detail areas.

-FIX THE GOALIES! The goalies seem to rely more on percentages than
anything. In watching the NHL over the years, goaltenders are far
more likely to let in a goal under the legs or through the 5 hole
instead of the dumb 'let me move out of the way' procedure of WG3D.

-Fix penalty situations. Im pretty sure all the penalties are not on
there, and the way the penalties work needs to be altered. Also, if
they can put in 2d crowds, why not full benches and manned penalty boxes?

-LET US CHOOSE WHO PLAYS WHERE!! 2 on 2 is good, but sometimes you want
3-0, 3-1, or 4-0. Also, let us choose how many players we want
for either mode. Sometimes, 1-0 simulation mode could be pretty fun.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
2-1 Player Rankings/Abbreviations Explanations
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
 S H O O T I N G
1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 1 2 1 2 3
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 12 14 16
			10 11 13 15

All player ratings are done from the game on a 1-16 scale, where
16 is the highest and 1 is the lowest. However, no player
scores below a 7 in any possible area.

The exception in this game is that goalies not have visible ratings.

WG3D: Refers to the name of the game, "Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey". This
reference is used several times throughout this FAQ to show
differences between the real game of hockey and this N64 game.

N64: Refers to the "Nintendo 64". This is the video game console needed
to play WG3D. I'm aware this is also an arcade title (which
coincedentally has *perfect* jerseys), but I have not played it
	and cannot judge differences.

DD64 or DD Drive: As of this writing, Nintendo is planning to release
a magneto/optical drive which can hold 8 times the information
that is currently on a WG3D game pak. The only name
available so far is the 'DD64', 'Bulky Drive', or 'DD Drive'.
An even more obscure name is the 'Ultradisk'.

SP= Speed Rating out of a total possible of 16. Speed affects
the player's ability to skate. High speed players,
like Bure or Federov, zoom past opposing players, often
avoiding checks, and avoiding goalies on the way to the net!

	---------------------
	Top League Speedsters
	---------------------
	[Pavel] Bure            ->  Vancouver Canucks
	[Jaromir] Jagr          ->  Pittsburgh Penguins
	[Alexander] Mogilny     ->  Vancouver Canucks
[Sergei] Federov -> Detroit Red Wings
[Teemu] Selanne -> Anaheim Mighty Ducks
[Mike] Gartner -> Toronto Maple Leafs
[Jeff] Friesen -> San Jose Sharks
	[Mike] Sullivan         ->  Calgary Flames

SH= Shooting Rating out of a total possible of 16. Shooting
affects players accuracy to put the puck in the net.
Snipers like Gretzky or Lemieux have a habit of putting
a wrist shot in *just* the place they want it.

	---------------------
	Top League Snipers
	---------------------
	[Mario] Lemieux         -> Pittsburgh Penguins
	[Adam] Oates            -> Boston Bruins
	[Pat] Lafontaine        -> Buffalo Sabres
	[Eric] Lindros          -> Philidelphia Flyers
[Wayne] Gretzky -> New York Rangers

ST= Strength Rating out of a total possible of 16. Strength
