Frequently Asked Questions ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- a. General ---------- Q. Any demos for NFS:U? A. Get it from the official site (www.needforspeed.com). It's about 220MB. You can only use the Nissan 350Z for a Circuit Race (1 Lap) and a Drag Race. - Q. I'm replaying through UG mode to create a ride purely for drag races. Which of TJ's upgrades should I choose? A. After completing a challenge from TJ that rewards you with a unique performance upgrade, you will be shown the performance upgrade selection screen. For each part selected a small increment would be added to one of the gauges at the bottom (Acceleration, Top Speed or Handling). Pick a part that increases acceleration (or top speed) since good handling is not required in drag races. Drag race mode in NFS:U has been simplified to just changing lanes so no precise controls on the wheel is necessary. - Q. Is it possible to adjust either the performance or style point multiplier of bonus cars (e.g. Eddie's Skyline)? A. No. No visual upgrades even. - Q. Why do I get a blown engine during a drag race no matter which car I choose? A. You have to do manual shift change during drag races even if you have it set to auto in the options menu. (PC) Use the Ins key to shift up, Del key to shift down. Alternatively you can use A and Z. (PS2) Use R2 to shift up, and L2 to shift down. - Q. I've seen online players holding 17 second records for drag tracks. How do I get 18 seconds in a drag race? A. Not possible, unless you cheat. It's either that or you have an excellent ride and a perfect run. Also you need might some help from an opponent to ram you on the rear bumper for a slight speed boost. That's to get a 'less than 20 second' record. It's a well-known fact that online cheating is rampant, therefore even if a 17 second record exists (without cheating), there's no way to confirm the validity. - Q. I only have gloss paint colors to choose from. How do I access pearlescent and metallic paint colors? A. In base paint menu, click on the left or right symbol just next to the gloss paint text. - Q. Where do I get the Unique Vinyl (with flames) shown during one of the loading screens? A. (In reference to the loading screen with following text, "Apply up to four layers of vinyl onto your car") Samantha's Custom Vinyl No. 5 can be acquired by completing Challenge 68, among with 9 other unique vinyls. The "flames" are part of the vinyl, while the base paint for the car should be part of the metallic set (sixth color from the left, 2nd row out of three) - Q. In the Drag Tutorial, the car's engine sounds different, something like out of the movie. Is that possible to replicate in the game? A. (submissions welcomed) - Q. How do I capture screenshots of the game? A. Press the 'Print Screen' key on your keyboard, then ALT-TAB or quit to desktop and open Paint. Click on edit and select paste. Then choose yes when asked to enlarge the bitmap. - Q. How many challenges are there in Underground Mode? A. 112, although the indicator will always show 111 in total. This does not include the initiation race before the first challenge (1/111), therefore it's arguable that there's actually 113 races in Underground Mode. - Q. I played through 113 races in Underground Mode. Is your FAQ incorrect? A. The last race is stated as 112/111 on the top right. For ease of use, I will use that as a reference. The additional race you're refering to would be the first race, before challenge 1/111. After completing this race would you be able to choose one of the five cars to use in Underground Mode and subsequently begin the first challenge proper. This is what will be stated in the FAQ until I am informed otherwise. - Q. Are there any cops in Need for Speed Underground? A. Need for Speed Underground does not have any police that will pursue those who violate the speed limits in the game. (source: official site) - Q. Which out of the five cars at the beginning of a new profile is best for drift races? A. Miata. Though it's not a good choice for drag (engine blows too easily). - Q. What are the different Style Points available? A. Plus: Drafting, Hang Time, Powerslide, Clean Section (+50), Clean Lap (+200), Clean Race (+500), Near Miss (+100), Shortcut (+100), Head Start (+100), Lead Lap (+100), Victory (+500), NOS Purge (+150), 360 (+200) Minus: Hit Traffic Note: You can only get the style points for a successful 360 three times in a race (200 x 3). All subsequent 360s will be ignored. Victory and Clean Race style points are awarded once, at the end of a race. All other points are multiplied by the number of successful attempts. Note: Shortcut style points are awarded once in every race, for each shortcut. Taking the same shortcut multiple times will only bag you that particular style points bonus once, but taking different shortcuts in a race will reward you with a style point bonus per shortcut. - Q. What about the NOS Purge bonus? A. The correct way to do a NOS purge! Gain 150 style points during the count down by doing a full rev and holding it, then tap the NOS button. You will know you've done a NOS purge when smokes come out from the sides of your car. (info by Jax of Lincoln) To get a NOS Purge bonus, tap the NOS button at the start of a race, just before the counter reaches 0. It's worth 150 points and has no multiplier so it's only worth doing once! (info by Andy Turner) Right before the race starts, press the NOS button. A little exhaust from the port will blow through the vents/edge of your hood. It looks like when a bull snorts and it's purely for show, but you get 150 points for doing it. It just takes a light tap, no need to waste any of your NOS for later. That plus head start is a great way to start every race with a 250 style points bonus. (info by Josh) - Q. How can I drift better? A. If you're using a Skyline, try the RX-7. Else turn off stability control from the Car Menu (under Main Menu, Options) - Q. Do you get anything extra for beating Underground Mode on Hard difficulty? A. No. There's no difference to the type or number of rewards unlocked in Easy, Normal or Hard Difficulty. Except for the credit amount you earn, of course. - Q. Can I carry over the rewards earned/unlocked to another profile? A. No. By starting a new profile, you begin afresh and would have to play thru Underground Mode or Quick Races to earn the rewards again. This applies to all unlockable tracks, vinyls, upgrades, bonus cars and such. - Q. Why is challenge 86/95 so difficult? A. Have you tried the race level in mafia? Please refer to the Underground Mode walkthrough for tips on beating the challenge. One angle of looking at it is that it has something to do with top speed. The AI uses the top speed to their advantage, so if you're not comfortable with those corners you'll definitely lose out in the race. Reducing the top speed will set a handicap that all opponents will follow suit, thus making it difficult to put the catch-up logic to good use. - Q. Challenge 30 (Dead Calm) requires me to upgrade to reputation level 2. I've done everything including visual upgrades, but it won't let me race. What do I do? A. It should be possible to race Challenge 30 if you've upgraded everything. Check to see if you missed any visual upgrades. Spoilers, etc. (Note that Challenge 14 also requires you to have at least a Reputation Level of x1 to participate) - Q. I got beaten by a supposedly 'weaker' car. Why does all car models perform the same? A. Not all cars are alike. Please refer to the 'Cars' section for all the minor differences. The difference is miniscule therefore it's easy to mistake that all rides perform the same. (although this does make some of the cars slightly inaccurate compared to their actual counterparts) - Q. I've heard rumors of personalized number plates. Is this true? A. The rumors are false. You're stuck with "UNDRGND" like the rest of us, if that helps. - Q. What's the best car in the game? A. You have two choices here. The Skyline has speed and control. On the other hand, the RX-7's handling is slightly better and pretty useful to use in Drift races. - Q. When do I unlock more headlights to customize my ride? A. In challenge 60 (Bright Lights Big Spoiler). Understandably, this will cause some confusion as the only sets of headlights available to you are stock and Level 3s. There are no Level 1 and 2 headlights to unlock. - Q. During one of the loading screens, it says "Learn how to drift by watching the tutorial videos." How can I access the videos? A. Select Quick Race from the Main Menu, highlight Drag or Drift and press "T". (PS2) Press L2 instead when Drag or Drift is highlighted. ------------------------- b. Vinyl/Paints/Body Kits ------------------------- Q. How do you change the color of a vinyl? A. Go to the Change Vinyl screen, where 4 vinyl layers are shown. Make sure the vinyl you want to change is highlighted. There are 2 buttons below it that says 'layer order' and 'vinyl color'. Use your mouse to click on 'vinyl color' then choose your color using the keyboard. - Q. How do you change the color of a vinyl (PS2)? A. Go to the Change Vinyl screen, where 4 vinyl layers are shown. Make sure the vinyl you want to change is highlighted. Press square on the vinyl to enter the color selection screen. - Q. I have tried clicking on vinyl color at the Change Vinyl screen but nothing happens, and when I click on the arrows the layer order changes. What gives? A. Firstly, you have to select a vinyl (Lighting 3, Tribal 3, etc.) Then click on 'vinyl color' with your mouse to enter the color selection screen. For vinyls that carry a "2" or "3" label, you have to choose 2 or 3 colors for them. Note: Colors for Unique and Manufacturer Vinyls cannot be changed. You can only "blend" their colors with your car by using Pearlescent Paint. - Q. How do you get Level 2/3 Paints? A. Level 2 Paint can be unlocked in Underground Mode, challenge 23 and Level 3 Paint can be unlocked in challenge 65. - Q. How do you paint engine parts? A. You need to upgrade your engine/exhaust to at least street performance (Performance Upgrade Level 1 Engine/Exhaust Packages) since you can't paint stock parts. The paint change is not visible for level 1 packages although you should be able to watch the engine accent paint change as you scroll through the paint palette for Level 2 and 3 packages. So if it doesn't look like there's any difference after choosing an engine accent color chances are you have a Level 1 Package. Upgrade to Level 2 or 3, then try and change the color again. (info by Michael Hauder) - Q. Is it possible create your own vinyl for use in the game? A. No, sorry. - Q. What is a wide body kit? A. A wide body kit extends the body of the car laterally to cover the tires. They look like molded mud flaps that connects the bumper to the skirt. You unlock them in challenge 110. And no, you can't have them both. Not without hacking your save, anyway. Note that installing certain wide body kits can totally change the outlook of your ride. For example sticking the Vapor wide body kit onto a stock Lancer and you will end up with what looks like a Lancer Evo VIII (well, that's what people keep telling me). You can see a Lancer with a Vapor wide body kit early in the game, in Challenge 29 (Scouting Report). Todd will be driving the Lancer in question and you'll notice that it looks different compared to the Lancer you unlock by completing Challenge 4 (The Perfect Shift). Todd's ride has a large Mitsubishi insignia while the stock Lancer has a smaller one. This is because you only unlock that particular wide body kit in Challenge 110! Moreover if you select the wrong wide body kit (picking Mantis instead of Vapor), then you've missed your chance and need to start another profile all over again. - Q. Upgrading to a wide body kit means new wheels (tires that are wider), thus improving acceleration and handling. Am I right? A. No. Wide body kits are listed as visual upgrades. If visual upgrades affect a car's performance, all cars would thus have the same parts to get the best performance possible, therefore defeating the purpose of having different visual upgrades. - Q. How can I get both wide body kits? Do I have to play through Underground Mode again? A. Simple. You can't. There's absolutely no way you can have both and swap kits in-between races. If you've selected one you're stuck with that unless you begin a new Underground Mode with another profile. This applies to all Unique Rewards. The only way to get both wide body kits is to hack your save. It's not possible to earn both of them in a single profile through normal means. Also, you can't carry over unlocked and earned rewards from one profile to another. - Q. How can I get all the unique vinyls that Samantha offers me? A. (Please refer to the above question) - Q. Quick. The Mantis or the Vapor wide body kit? A. Vapor. Looks better on most rides. Plus, if you want a ride similar to what Todd's driving in Challenge 29 (Scouting Report), you definitely need to pick the Vapor wide body kit for your Lancer (or at least unlock it to customize a stock Lancer for quick races). - Q. Can I unlock and apply the Eastsiderz vinyl from Eddie's car onto my custom ride? A. No. The Eastsiderz vinyl is unique for Eddie's Skyline only, just like the Rob Zombie vinyl can only be found on Rob Zombie's bonus car. ----------------------- c. Performance Upgrades ----------------------- Q. Is there any difference in performance when choosing brand packages for upgrades? A. No. Brand makes no difference. All the brand packages perform equally well. - Q. Best unique performance upgrade combination? A. Engine, E.C.U. and trans. If you're looking for a second opinion, put turbo into the mix for better acceleration. For handling, tires and brakes would be the right choice. -------------------------- d. Rewards/Magazine Covers -------------------------- Q. Does selection of difficulty level for each challenge affects the rewards given on completion? A. To my knowledge, no. - Q. I have collected Eddie's Nissan Skyline Style Reward. Is there any more? A. Nope. That's the last of the 114 Style Rewards you can unlock in NFS:U. - Q. How do I know if I've unlocked all the style rewards? A. Once you have Eddie's Skyline, that should be it. Else check to see if your style gauge increases after gaining some style points. If it you're still getting level up, then there's style rewards yet to be unlocked. All style rewards should be unlocked when you've acquired about 3,000,000 style points. You may have to level up your reputation multiplier to 5x max to unlock all style rewards. - Q. Does different profiles unlock different magazine covers? A. Yes, slightly. You will get the same cover although the model(s) posing for the magazine is/are chosen at random, then superimposed on the cover of the magazine with your ride in the background. (I might need help to confirm that there's only two poses for Melissa.) Method of unlocking the covers stays the same, though. ------------ e. Trade Ins ------------ Q. I have unlocked new cars earned in Underground Mode, but when I Trade In the stats stay the same. I don't understand the point of having a different car but stuck with the same stats. Does the car model really matter? A. Stats are not the same, they are just not shown there. Here's how to view stats for the car you'd like to change to. Select a a car to "Trade In" and press Enter. A performance screen will show up. This is the current performance stats of your current car. Press Enter again and that'll be the stats of the car you're purchasing. Stats change as upgrades are acquired over the course of the game. - Q. Can I trade in my car repeatedly for rebates? A. Yes. It's possible. ----------- f. Profiles ----------- Q. Can I have more than one car per profile to use in Underground Mode? A. No. You're limited to one custom car per profile. You have to trade in to use another car. There is no garage option. - Q. Is it possible to unlock all unique parts for one driver profile? A. No, sorry. It can't be done through normal means. Not unless you plan to hack your save. --------- g. Cheats --------- Q. Why don't the PC cheats work? A. Cheats found in the cheats section should work if you follow the instructions carefully. Remember to enter and exit the Statistics screen once before you key in the cheat code. There is no notification when the cheat is typed in correctly. You have to do a quick check on whether the tracks/bonus car has been unlocked or not by going into the quick race menu. If not, try again. You might have missed out something or typed incorrectly. - Q. Why don't the PS2 cheats work? A. I have not tested them since I don't own a PS2. - Q. Why doesn't the unlimited nitro code work? A. To my knowledge, there is no unlimited nitro code. ------------ h. Technical ------------ Q. (PC) How do I copy my profile/custom car to play on another PC? Where does Underground store saved game profile information? Where are the save games located? A. (Win XP users) Saved Game information can be found at this location: (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\NFS Underground). Remember to enable "Show Hidden Files" to be able to locate the Application Data directory. You'll be able to save and re-import this information into your game (if you have a re-format, or any other data loss) as long as you put it into the same directory. (source: official site) (Win 9x and ME users) Look for your save files here: C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\NFS Underground. - Q. How do you turn off the slow-mo cam? (also known as the crash cam) A. Select OPTIONS, then CAMERA, and move the Jump Cameras slider all the way to the left. (or to the right, if you want more of it) - Q. Can I import my own music (MP3's) into Need for Speed Underground? A. No, the game does not support imported music files. However, you can mute the game music (set it to 0) and use a media player to play your music in the background. - Q. Is there a replay option? A. The replay option is not available in NFS:U, unlike previous NFS in the series. - Q. Is there a rear view mirror option? A. Yes. Although the rear mirror view is only available if you have selected bumper cam mode. Press the 'Esc' key to bring up the Pause Menu, then select 'Camera'. Choose 'Bumper Cam' for your Favourite Drive Camera. Then return to the previous menu and choose 'Display'. The rearview mirror option should appear now. Turn it on. Note: This option will not appear unless you have already selected 'Bumper Cam' for your Favourite Drive Camera. - Q. Is there language support? A. Yes. Although you have to mess around with the registry. (only attempt this if you know what you're doing!) No instructions. I trust that with the sparse info provided below, you should be able to change the language. Else, there's a file on the web that helps you do the same although you may have to look real hard for it. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\EA GAMES\Need For Speed Underground Name: Language Options: English US, Dutch, Spanish, Swedish, French, German, Italian Bear in mind that when receiving messages in the Underground Mode, sound bites will not be played, and all cutscenes will still be in English. And no, the tracks are still in English no matter how much you want to hear Lil Jon rap in Spanish. - Q. Will there be any downloadable content (Paint Jobs, Cars, etc.) for Need for Speed Underground? A. Due to the compatibility between the PS2 console and the PC, there will be no downloadable content available for the game. The reason for this being that both platforms must remain exactly the same in order to be compatible. Any change to one must be made to the other. (source: official site) - Q. Is there online support for Cube/Box? A. No. Online support is only available for PS2 and PC users only. - Q. (PC) How do I activate motion blur? It's blurred out in the Display Settings. A. If it's blurred out, most likely your display card does not support that option. The only way you can get motion blur to work is to obtain a new graphics card. Anyway, the blur effect is not a must-see option. I have seen it in GTA and MGS on the PC, it really doesn't improve gameplay (and will cause eye discomfort over time). Reason being blur effects do not translate well on the PC, only on TV. (This goes the same for crowd option) No driver updates can help you here. My guess is that these options are not available for "pre-DirectX 9" graphics card owners. - Q. (PC) How do I activate headlights in the game, similar to what we see in the tutorial? A. You can only enable headlights if your graphics card support such option. As the tutorial is a video cutscene it may mislead you to believe that the headlights option is available for your system. This is not true. Please refer to the question regarding motion blur for more details. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- XV.
