Gauntlet: Dark Legacy - Strategy Guide (Page 04)
Below are the cheat codes, hints and help for Gauntlet: Dark Legacy - Strategy Guide (Page 04).
===============================
A. Upper Tower
===============================
The Upper Tower is where you start out at the very beginning of the game. It
contains the first two Realms in it: The Forsaken Province, and the Mountain
Kingdom.
-------------------------------
1) Forsaken Province
-------------------------------
Requirements: 15 Orange Crystals
Boss: Lich
Legend Item: Parchment of Fire
Treasure Room: Medusa
Grunt: Zombie
Generator: Tombstone
Advanced Grunt: Ghost
Generator: Cross Tombstone
Ankle Biter: Maggot
Generator: Pile of flesh and bones
General: Tall green zombie with a scythe
Golem: Uprooted Grass
Gargoyle: Serpent
Floor Trap: Metal Spikes
Wall Trap: Fire Geyser
The Sorceress' place has been captured by Ghosts and Zombies! You and your
party must put a stop to this before the whole Province is ruined and
destroyed! Medusa should be a useful advantage to your party too...
When you start out the game, Sumner will give you the story line. When he's
done, he'll create 15 Orange Crystals. There is 1 in front of Sumner on the
stairs, and the other 14 are to the left of Sumner near the wall. Gather these
and head for the entrance to the Province. The invisible wall will disappear,
and you'll be on your way. Stand in the first portal, and you'll be transported
to the first level of the Realm: The Poisoned Fields.
Levels
------
a) Poisoned Fields - Runestone 1
b) Ghost Town - Treasure Room 1
c) Haunted Cemetary - Parchment of Fire
d) Mausoleum - Runestone 2
e) Lich's Crypt - Shard 1
a) Poisoned Fields
===============================
- You'll begin on a cliff. Make your way around the hedges, and make sure you
collect all the Red Crystals you see. The more you collect the faster you will
be able to enter the next Realm. As you make your way into to the fields, make
sure you shoot the larger haystacks. They are secret walls and can contain many
items, including more valuable Crystals.
* You'll pick up a scroll saying "Past the old mill is a very well guarded
vault." When you pass the mill, a zombie General will charge at you. This is a
good sign. At the top of your screen you should see a vault that looks like a
small shed. Shoot the door of this small building to reveal the first
Runestone.
- Continue on and ride the elevator down to a large open plains area. Get the
Gask Mask to your character's right. Make sure you shoot the fence behind the
elevator to gain access to a Yellow Crystal and some Levitation. Clear out the
area and proceed to a bridge. Shoot the walls at the crest of the bridge. Stand
on the side of the crest of the bridge and a stump will arise. Get on it and it
will take you down to three more stumps. Then, two more wooden platforms will
arise with some Food and a Super Shot. Grab it and continue on to the other
side.
- After you pass the stone bridge, you'll turn right, and face some big
zombies. Theres a wall on the bottom side (you'll be going from left to right,
and there are stone walls above you and below you) that can be destroyed.
Inside this little area are three barrels, which contain some gold, etc.
- After that you'll reach another area with a General. Kill him and clear out
the area. Go to the sundial in the middle and run over it like a switch. The
sundial will redirect itself. Now go over to the chest on the dock to make the
chest arise. Open it to get some Gold with Gems. The sundial in the middle will
arise and reveal Golden Snake Fangs. Get it and split.
- Climb up the building and shoot the beaten up crates for items. Hit the
switch and proceed to the next area. Clear out this area and proceed. These two
areas contain what seems like and endless amount of green barrels and suicide
bombers so prepare yourself well.
- Move towards the end and a scroll will tell you not to pass without two
switches. There is one right by the locked gate, and the other one is right on
the cliff by the left side of the area. Proceed through the gates, making sure
to avoid all the wall traps. Just a little bit further up ahead, you'll see
another scroll that informs you that theres a Death right ahead. He's on the
small plateau right by the switch needed to reach the exit, so you'll have to
face him sooner or later. Defeat Death, hit the switch, get the Crystals, and
take the exit.
b) Ghost Town
===============================
- You start out right outside the gates of the Town. Once you clear out all
enemies nearby, proceed through the gate on your left and a General will
immediately charge at you. Kill him and cross the bridge to clear out the area.
Enter and proceed through the destroyed house and you'll see yet another
General waiting for you. Kill him, and any other enemies nearby. Turn left to
grab a Full Meal and the switch. The switch will lower the floor boards of the
house and will lead you to a small compartment containing Bananas, a Green
Crystal, and another switch. Pull down the lever to lower a chest out of the
water tower. Inside is a Steak, which is definitely worth using a key on. Have
a little dinner and continue on.
- You'll see some beaten up fences at the bottom. Shoot them and pass through
them. Clear out these next two heavily guarded areas. Make sure you destroy the
crates for items, mainly Keys. Use these Keys to enter the locked house. Bash
in the walls for some Purple Crystals. The front wall of the house is
breakable, so shoot it and reveal a chest with a switch. You know what to do.
- In the house that's playing music, theres going to be lots of those pesky
maggots. Kill them, along with any others, and head upstairs. On the catwalk is
a target. Shoot it, and head back downstairs for Snake Fangs that you
discovered. Collect your things, and prepare for one fun battle.
- When you exit the house you'll see two switches by a crane. Hit the actual
switch on the ground first to lower the chest, then pull the lever to bring the
boxes over to replace the walkway. Proceed down and take a left. Hit the switch
by the minecart door to open the gate to the chest. Once that area is cleared
out, go back up to the chest and get it. Then, head down to the galleys and pay
Death a visit. Hit the lever on the galley platform to open the hole in the
center of the platform. Go over to the switch and Green Crystal by the other
wooden platform to raise up the Treasure in the galley. Claim it, and move on.
* Proceed on and find a scroll that says "There is more than bats in the
belfrey." Meaning, there's something valuable in the bell tower! Defeat the
Golem and proceed.
* You'll eventually reach a Gargoyle that is gaurding the exit. Slay it. If you
haven't already shot a hidden wall and hit the switch that lowers a ramp in the
belfrey, backtrack until you do. Then proceed, but make sure you do NOT take
the exit... yet. Climb up the belfrey ramps and into the Treasure Room. Its the
Midway "M"! Collect all the coins to unlock the Sorceress' upgrade class,
Medusa!
- Once you're finished in the Treasure Room, its safe to take the exit.
c) Haunted Cemetary
===============================
- When you start up the level, you will be surprised with a small movie clip.
This clip gives you a HUGE hint on where to find the Legend Item in the level.
This one, particularly, practically GIVES you the Parchment of Fire, which is
in fact the Legend Item for the Province. If you watch the movie, you'll know
where and how to get it easily. You shouldn't need me to guide you through this
part... If you do... well... you're going to need to find some... professional
help...
- Anyways... You'll start out at the gates of a long winding road. Kick your
way through all the maggots and traps. At then end of the road you'll reach the
gates to the cemetary. Clear out the cemetary, hit the switches, and continue
on. Watch out for Red Death inside a breakable coffin inside the cemetary.
- Continue on until you reach another cemetary. Inside you'll see a Gargoyle
along with a bunch of switches and a tomb on the right side. Once you've gotten
everything, proceed to the left of the cemetary to yet another long winding
road. Along the way you'll see two Crystals next to a switch. Hit the switch,
break down the two crypt doors and proceed.
- Not too much farther, you'll come up to a locked set of doors, that need a
switch to open them. Hit the switch on the left cliff to open the gates on the
right. Head up thte hill and shoot the cement walls; most of them are secret
walls. Also make sure you destroy the cobble stones on the left side of the
area to reveal a chest and a switch. Hit all the switches and continue on the
narrow pathways until you reach a tree. Shoot the roots to reveal a powerful
Thunder Hammer.
* Go back to where you saw the two sets of doors. Now the other set of doors
will be lowered. You'll see four crypts. You are able to shoot the doors of
three of them, but beware. One of these three contains Death. Further up you'll
see a big stone statue inside a small flaming pool that you saw in the movie at
the beginning of the movie. You'll have to hit a total of four switches to be
able to obtain the Parchment of Fire. Once obtained move on.
- Further on, you'll enter a whole valley of stumps and fences. Weave your way
in and out of the tricky maze, making sure you investigate the bridge area that
you saw back near the Parchment of Fire, along with the tombs that hang around
here too.
- At the end of the field of fences, you'll come up to a road full of broken
branches, fallen trees and uprooted plants. In one stump near the end, there is
a switch that reveals two chests and a Cherry that appears from a small
underground chamber. DO NOT get the chest on the left. It contains a bomb.
Instead get the chest on the right, which contains a chestful of pure Gems,
which is definitely worth a Key. Take the exit, and leave this awful place.
d) Mausoleum
===============================
- You'll start in the crappy part of the Mausoleum. Actually, its all crappy.
There are TONS of targets you have to shoot in this level, so keep an eye out
for them.
- Walking through the cement floors in the beginning isn't really that tough,
just make sure you collect all the Crystals and that you kill all the bomb
throwers before they have enough time to inflict damage. Also make sure you
don't mess around - with the new Ghosts. They're really strong and can pack
quite a punch.
- Make sure you look thoroughly behind trees for switches, Crystals, etc.
- Further up you'll see lots of coffins. Inside are people, live and screaming
at the top of their lungs. Unforunately, you can't do a thing about it, except
listen. In this area is also a Red Death, so get your Potions ready.
* Right across the bridge that you lowered with five Crystals is a scroll. It
reads "On the altar, much has been offered to Skorne." and indeed there has! On
the altar with a bunch of Treasure and a chest, there's a Runestone! Shoot the
checkered wall behind these items to reveal it! To get up to the altar, shoot
the hidden wall on the corner perpendicular to the altar and the bridge. Inside
is a switch and a Purple Crystal. Hit the switch and it will raise up the Steak
on the switch by the bridge. This switch will raise the stairs to the altar.
- By the floor that cracks and falls to the ground is a secret wall. Shoot it
to reveal a switch. Hit it to make the ape statue fold his hands together so
you can walk across them.
- In the hallowed chapel is a whole bunch of Treasure. On the side with golden
railings, you'll see a small section of railing thats pretty beaten up. Shoot
it to gain access back to about 500 Gold. Make your way through whats left of
the chapel, making sure to get all Purple Crystals in sight. You'll need them.
Not too much further ahead is a Gargoyle. Slay it and continue forward.
- The next ape statue is really and elevator. Shoot the target to lower
yourself down to a bunch of traps and poison gas barrels.
- Run down the rocky ramps and clear out the sections. Hit the switches and
prepare for a General. Make your way down the long winding roads. Near the
exit, make sure you collect all the Crystals and Potions inside the coffins
that the switches revealed. Take the exit, and remember what the scroll said.
"Only a fool would face the Lich without the Good Book!"
e) Lich's Crypt
===============================
- The Lich isn't exactly the hardest boss in the game, but he's definitely not
the easiest. The Chimera wins that award. Check bosses section of the
Walkthrough Chapter for lots of information about the Lich and ways to defeat
this ugly-looking, maggot-spitting creature. The Book of Protection, or Good
Book, used against the Lich is in the Sky Shipyards in the Sky Dominion. Find
it first before battling the Lich.
-------------------------------
2) Mountain Kingdom
-------------------------------
Requirements: 100 Red Crystals
Boss: Dragon
Legend Item: Javelin of Blinding
Treasure Room: Minotaur
Grunt: Elf
Generator: Shack
Advanced Grunt: Fire Demon
Generator: Small Volcano
Ankle Biter: Scorpion
Generator: Pile of Bones
General: Undead Pirate
Golem: Ground/ Rock
Gargoyle: Serpent
Floor Trap: Fire Geyser
Wall Trap: Fire Geyser
Looks like the Warrior's home has been overrun by vicious Fire Demons and weak
stupid Elves. Your journey through the volcano shouldn't be that hard. You can
also find a very useful upgrade for your Warrior here too. The Minotaur should
help your Warrior become better and stronger.
When you have completed the Forsaken Province, you should have collected at
least 100 Red Crystals. If you haven't then you must go back to a level, (I
suggest the Fields) until you do. Or if you haven't beaten the whole Realm yet
and you're just sick of the Province (which is VERY common), you can come to
the Mountain until you feel like going back to the Province. You do NOT have to
beat a Realm in order to proceed to the next. That is one of the most
misunderstood parts of GDL.
For those of you that have played Gauntlet Legends before, these levels should
be very familiar to you. These are the exact same levels, only with a few
differences. You know, a Gargoyle here, a few Crystals there... The whole
layout and topography of the levels are exactly the same though.
Levels
------
a) Valley of Fire - Runestone 3
b) Dagger Peak - Treasure Room 2
c) Cliffs of Desolation
d) Lost Cave
e) Volcanic Cavern - Javelin of Blinding
f) Dragon's Lair - Shard 2
a) Valley of Fire
===============================
- You begin in the midst of weak elves and poison barrels. Carefully clear out
the area and head across the bridge.
* Across the bridge, you'll see a Runestone on a small ledge by the waterfall.
After you clear out this area, run up the stone stairs and shoot the dirt walls
directly above the head that spits out water. In it will be a Drumstick, a
White Crystal, and a switch that raises the Runestone. Backtrack down the
stairs and retrieve your prize.
- Keep climbing up the stone stairs. There is going to be many flights of
stairs that lead to different plateaus, each containing a few elf generators, a
few bomb throwers or archers, and a few poisonus or explosive barrels. Again,
make sure you kill the archers and bomb throwers first. They're attacks can
really add up.
- On one of the plateaus near the end is a Gargoyle. Along with it is a bomb
thrower. Use your Turbo Attack to kill the bomb thrower, then freely battle the
Gargoyle. This will be alot easier than trying to kill the Gargoyle while
you're taking in about 4 damage every second or so. Once the Gargoyle is slain,
proceed up the flight of stairs until the exit is reached. Before you exit, get
the Green Crystal thats hiding in the back, you'll need it.

X) Hints and Codes
===============================
-------------------------------
===============================
Hints
===============================
Bonus levels:
Play the first level three or more times, then go to the Section level. Play
that level two times to unlock another section of levels.
Screensaver:
Pause game play and do not press any buttons. Eventually some axes will start
flying around the screen.
Hint: Defeating Bosses:
An easy way to defeat the Bosses is to buy four or five of the following items
before the fight: Triple Shot, Rapid Fire, a magical amulet (Acid, Light, Fire,
etc.) that the Boss is weak against. Get close and press the button as fast as
possible. It is amazing how quickly the Boss' life goes down. This strategy can
be used for every Boss in the game and also makes the Spider Queen very easy.
Hint: Defeating Plague:
Go to the far upper right or left. You should be directly next to his vat. This
is his blind spot, and very few attacks can reach you. Just fire away at him
until he is dead. Note: This is best done with two players, one on each side of
his vat.
Hint: Defeating Generals:
Fire a strong attack. The General will block it. Then, fire a turbo attack.
Repeat this until they are dead. For a more powerful hit, use the turbo attack
when close to them.
Hint: Easy experience:
Killing the Spider Queen repeatedly. She is worth the best experience. If you
have some friends playing, have them use the "Defeating Bosses" trick for rapid
killing. You can get two to three levels per fight depending on how long your
items lasted.
Go to any level in the Forsaken Province world. Instead of destroying a
generator, keep killing the enemies.
Hint: Stronger magic:
When you use magic, it will be stronger depending on your character's color.
Blue: Lightning potions are stronger and have better radius. Lightning shields
are also larger.
Green: Acid potions are stronger and have better radius. Acid shields are also
stronger
Red: Fire potions are stronger and have better radius. Fire shields are also
stronger.
Yellow: Light potions are stronger and have better radius. Light shields are
also stronger
Hint: Maximum character attributes:
Enable the "10,000 gold per level" code. You will start the game with 10,000
gold. Go shopping and buy magic, armor, strength, or speed until you are out of
gold. Return to the game and you will once again have 10,000 gold. Keep buying
attribute level-ups until your character has 999 strength, 999 armor, 999 speed
and 999 magic. You can also replenish your health following a tough level by
buying meat until it is restored. Save your character or this will have to be
repeated.
Hint: Level 99 Sumner:
To get the level 99 Sumner, go to the second level of the Battle Grounds, and
play it normally. Find the exit, then backtrack until you find a bridge. It
will be towards the front of the screen. You should not have to go far to find
it. Enter the trap door and get all the coins. Note: You may need to unlock all
the other secret characters first. When collecting all the coins, start on the
right side. This level is very difficult and may require a few attempts.
Sumner's stats are:
Level: 99
Strength: 999
Speed: 999
Armor: 999
Magic: 999
Gold: 5000
Health: 9999
Keys: 9
Potions: 9
Hint: Mini Mr. T. Dwarf:
Choose the Dwarf as your character and cycle through his colors until you get
to the one where he is black and is wearing yellow. You will see a near exact
Mr. T replica.
Hint: Mini Skorne:
When you defeat Skorne the first time, get the items he drops. Wait until you
exit the shop screen, then put them all on. You look like a smaller version of
Skorne. Note: This works best with the Dwarf.
Hint: Forsaken Province world: Mausoleum level: Dead man alive:
Go to where you lower the wooden bridge. Walk near the coffins and you will
hear a person screaming and pounding to get out.
Hint: Finding Runestones:
Go to Sumner and scroll down to "Runestones". It will tell you the next
Runestone location.
