Gauntlet: Dark Legacy - Strategy Guide (Page 02)
Below are the cheat codes, hints and help for Gauntlet: Dark Legacy - Strategy Guide (Page 02).
When you're battling a Gargoyle, the best advice I have for you is to
TAKE COVER! Take cover behind a stack of boxes, a wall, or anything you can
find that does not crumble when hit. Every once in a while peek out the side
and shoot the Gargoyle a couple times. Eventually, you'll kill it. If you try
the "half-full Turbo Attack" combo you'll lose very much life, very fast. If
you use this technique, the Gargoyle will not fall down, giving you extra time
to attack him. This is basically suicide. If you get up right next to the
Gargoyle, most likely, it'll use its breath attack, dealing out about 40 damage
or so. This can really add up. I recommend using the strafing technique also.
You'll probably get hit a few times by its attacks, but you'll kill him much
faster than taking cover. The Gargoyle's main attack, shooting some sort of
elemental ball, will do around 23 or 25 damage.
===============================
B. Gaining Levels
===============================
When your character fights, each time he hits an enemy gives him a small amount
of experience. Every time your character gains a level, it takes more
experience to gain another level, than it did the previous time. For example,
If your character is at level 20, it may take him about 500 experience points
for him to gain a level. Once he reaches level 21, It will take AT LEAST
another 501 experience points for him to gain another level. Reasonably, this
would take about 510-530 experience points. The more difficult the enemy your
killing is, the more experience you will get for each hit. Every time your
character gains a level, he gains 5 attribute points for each attribute, and
100 health is added to his Max Health. To help boost your attribute points
faster, you can buy them at the Shop. (10 attribute points for any attribute
costs 1000 Gold.)
These are the attributes:
-Strength: Strength is obviously, your character's actual strength. Strength
determines how much damage your character will inflict on enemies, or your
teammates. (If your the mean, evil, nasty, dishonorable type that likes to kill
your teammates when friendly fire is on...lmao) The higher your Strength, the
easier it is to kill enemies and/or teammates. Classes that excel in this field
are the Warrior, Minotaur, Dwarf, and Ogre.
-Armor: Armor is yet another obvious one. Armor helps determine how much damage
your enemies or teammates inflict on you. The higher your Armor, the longer it
takes your enemies and/or teammates to kill you. Classes that excel in this
field are the Valkyrie, Falconess, Knight, and Unicorn.
-Magic: To put it simply, Magic is Potion power. If you have high attribute
points in Magic, that means that your Potions will inflict more damage, and
when you use them regularly, ( pressing (-Y-)) the wave of the Potion will go
farther. The higher your Magic, the easier it is to kill enemies and/or
teammates with Potions. Classes that excel in this field are the Wizard,
Jackal, Sorceress, and Medusa.
-Speed: Speed is also a simple one to figure out. How fast you run is basically
all it is. But, this attribute can be alot more helpful than you may think.
When your character has low health and is facing a bunch of enemies, or a
Gargoyle or something, the faster he can run away from them, the better! The
higher your Speed, the easier it is to evade enemies when you need to. Classes
that excel in this field are the Archer, Tigress, Jester, and Hyena.
Every 10 Experience Levels your character gains, he changes in appearance.
Whether its a new garment, an upgraded weapon, or he just looks bigger and
badder, he changes every 10 levels. At level 10, 20, 40, 60, and 80, your
character gets new titles, depending on his class. For example, a level 60-79
Knight; His title would be a Champion. A level 10-19 Warrior; His title would
be a Fighter. (See Character Chapter for more details)
At Experience Level 25, your character earns a Special Ability. If your
character is level 25-49, his Magic will be able to not only kill Death, kill
enemies, but it will also significantly help your conquest. For example, if a
level 31 Tigress uses her Magic, it will make secret/hidden walls glow, so you
can easily identify where they are! If you are a level 48 Dwarf, using your
Magic can turn Junk into Silver! At Experience Level 50, your character earns
an Upgraded Special Ability. Yet again, if your character is level 50-99, not
only will their Magic have the ability to eliminate Death, kill enemies, but it
can significantly help your conquest. For example, if that same level 31
Tigress became a level 51 Tigress, her Magic can now COMPLETELY destroy secret
or hidden walls. And, if that same level 48 Dwarf became a level 68 Dwarf, he
can now turn Junk into Gold! Once your character reaches level 75 or higher,
they still have their Upgraded Special Ability, but they get a new feature.
Their Magic not only makes Death go away, kills enemies, and has the Upgraded
Special Ability, but, it can now heal themselves, as well as other players!
Late in the game, when your character is around level 85 or so, this feature
can easily be the line between life and death of your character, as well as
other players. (Check the Character Chapter for more information on Special
Abilities)
At Experience Level 30, your character will earn a Familiar, a little flying
companion that flies above you. This Familiar is almost exactly like the
Pheonix Familiar, except for one thing, you have unlimited time with it. It
will fly where you walk, fire when you fire, and fly faster when you run. No
matter what, it will always stay by your side. Well isn't that comforting...
Anyways when your character gets a Familiar, you'll notice fighting bosses and
large groups of enemies will be MUCH easier, since the Familiar virtually
doubles your rate of fire. It fires a magical little shot along with your
character. Whats cool about it, is that it can shoot over walls! For example,
in the Courtyard in the Castle Realm, when you're in the garden, you're
character's attack cannot go over the shrubs, but your Familiar's attack can!
It's really nifty if you like being the sniper type, where you can attack them,
but they can't attack you. But unfortunately, your Familiar's attacks will just
go right over Ankle Biters, so you can't 'snipe' Ankle Biters. At Experience
Level 80, your Familiar will become twice as big, twice as strong, and ten
times as helpful. Its attack can easily take out an enemy in one shot. When
you're that late in the game its VERY beneficial. Plus, it just looks awesome
too. =)

V. THE CLASSES
===============================
-------------------------------
*Note*
Every character, except Sumner, starts out at Level 1, has 500 Health, has no
keys or potions, has 0 gold, and levels or realms are locked, and inaccessible.
Sumner, however, starts out at Level 99, has 9999 Health, 9 Keys, 9 Potions,
5000 Gold, and all levels and realms are unlocked and accessible. (I,
personally, have not yet confirmed this, but I have heard this from a very
credible source.) Whenever a character's Experience Level reaches 99, he is
considered a Legend, and has permanent Growth. Black Death cannot to decrease a
Legend's Experience Level.

A. Common Items
===============================
This section is dedicated to the explanations of 4 of the most helpful items in
the game. Potions, Keys, Scrolls, and Barrels.
*Note*
Bombs appear VERY often in barrels and chests. Before using a key to open a
chest or shooting a barrel, using X-Ray Glasses to see which chests and barrels
you want to open is a wise decision.
-------------------------------
1) Potions
-------------------------------
Potions are a very important detail in GDL. It is the only item, besides
Anti-Death, that can eliminate Death. Potions are also a very strategic way of
killing your enemies. In the midst of a battle you can use, throw, or shield
yourself with a potion. All three of these techniques are very helpful. If
Death is nearby, and you have no Anti-Death, using your Potion is your best bet
in getting rid of him. If you can see a big group of enemies right in front of
you, throw a Potion right in the middle of their group, and you'll most likely
kill all of them. When you have enemies attacking you on all sides, or you just
feel like kickin' some major undead ass, using a Potion as a shield is the way
you want to go. Potions can be bought at the Shop for 250 Gold. Potions come in
4 different elements: Fire, Lightning, Acid, and Light. Here is a small chart
of the colors of each of the four potions, and what element they are.
Color | Element
-------+----------
Blue | Lightning
Green | Acid
Red | Fire
Yellow | Light
Potions have yet another use, but this time, its class specific. Below is
another small chart of each class' special uses for Potions.
Class | (25) Potion Special Use | (50) Potion Special Use
-------------+---------------------------+---------------------------
Wizard | Poison Fruit into Apple | Poison Meat into Drumstick
Sorceress | Poison Fruit into Apple | Poison Meat into Drumstick
Warrior | Junk into Silver | Junk into Gold
Dwarf | Junk into Silver | Junk into Gold
Valkyrie | Traps stunned 10 seconds | Destroys Traps
Knight | Traps stunned 10 seconds | Destroys Traps
Archer | Secret Walls Flash | Destroys Secret Walls
Jester | Secret Walls Flash | Destroys Secret Walls
Sumner | Poison Food into Apple | Poison Meat into Drumstick
-------------------------------
2) Keys
-------------------------------
Keys may be the most important item in the game. They have two main uses.
Unlocking doors, and unlocking chests. Locked doors appear pretty often in GDL,
and without a key, you cannot pass through them. Obviously, locked doors look
like a regular gate with a keyhole in the middle. You don't need to do anything
special to use a key. If you want to pass through a locked door, just run up to
it, and your character will automatically unlock it. Locked Chests appear VERY
often in GDL. There are probably at least 10 or more locked chests in each
level.(Excluding boss levels.) They often contain very valuable items and/or
power-ups, but they can also contain destructive items, like Poison Food,
Bombs, or even Death! You must have a key to open a locked chest, obviously.
Locked chests look like a small treasure chest lying on the ground with a small
keyhole on the lock. To open a locked chest, simply run up to it, and if you
have a key, your character will automatically unlock and open it. Keys can be
bought at the Shop for 100 Gold.
-------------------------------
3) Scrolls
-------------------------------
Scrolls are also a very important item. They give out VERY helpful clues about
the level, Such as, "Death lurks ahead" or "You will need to hit 5 switches
before getting this Runestone" or "Only a fool would face the Lich without the
Good Book". Scrolls can be found lying around out in the open or inside
barrels. To pick up and read a scroll, run up to it, and the message will
appear on the middle of the screen. When the message is on the middle of the
screen, the game will be paused, so take your time reading and interpreting the
message. Before you press (-A-) to continue on with your game, make sure you
know what the scroll is talking about, and prepare yourself for it. Scrolls
never lie. If a scroll says "Death lurks ahead" then obviously, theres a Death
ahead, so get out your Anti-Death or have your Potions ready for use. If one
says "Heroes long ago were very wealthy" that means that around some dead guys,
theres a bunch of money. You got to put 2 and 2 together folks! =)
-------------------------------
4) Barrels
-------------------------------
Barrels aren't really a type of item, but they are definitely a common and
important object in GDL. They appear VERY, VERY often, and they can contain
items. To open a barrel, simply shoot it, and the wooden sides will crumble to
the ground and reveal whats inside, if anything. Barrels come in three
different colors: Brown, red, and green. Brown barrels are your normal barrels.
When you shoot them, you either get an item, or you just leave a pile of sticks
on the ground. Green and red barrels, however, are a different story. When you
shoot a green barrel, a small intoxicative cloud of green gas explodes out of
it, poisoning all food around it, and your character if he walks in it. If your
character has a Gas Mask on, the green gas isineffective, and your character
will be able to walk through the green gas like it was never there. If there as
any type of Food in the cloud of poison gas, then it will spoil it and turn it
bad. If it was any type of fruit, it will turn it into Poison Fruit, and if it
was any type of meat, it will turn it into Poison Meat. If you shoot a red
barrel, a fairly large explosion will burst out of the barrel, hurting and
knocking down all characters around it. This includes enemies, your character,
and your teammates. Any item at all (this includes Treasure, Food, Special
Items, etc.) that is in the explosion will be turned to ashes, and is unusable.
Only shoot green and red barrels from a distance, if you want to play it safe.
===============================
B. Food (Health)
===============================
There are 12 different types of food that you will find in your journey. They
can be both good and bad, so watch what you eat. Like in Gauntlet Legends, meat
will give more health than fruit. Below are the 12 types of food, and how much
health they provide for your character. 2 Cherries can be bought at the Shop
for 50 Gold, and a Drumstick can be bought at the Shop for 250 Gold.
Type of Food | Health
-------------+---------
Poison Meat |-100
Poison Fruit |-50
Cherry | 10
Apple | 25
Banana | 50
Pineapple | 75
Watermelon | 75
Drumstick | 100
Steak | 125
Ribs | 150

===============================
C. Special Items (Power-Ups)
===============================
There are 32 Special Items in GDL. To access your Item List, press (DPu). To
scroll through each item, press (DPl) or (DPr). While in the Item List, press
(DPu) on an item to turn it on, and then (DPu) again to turn it off. To exit
the Item List, press (DPd).
*Note*
There is a glitch in GDL. This is kind of hard to explain, so kind of imagine
everything in your mind if you don't understand it the first time. Anyways,
once you turn on your XBOX console, and load your character, theres something
funky about the Item List. When you access your Item List, everything will be
gone! You can scroll through the Item List back and forth, but there will be no
item at all. Don't worry though, you're items have just gone 'invisible'. All
you have to do is act like you want to turn on an item. So, once in your Item
List, press (DPu) like you were going to turn on an item, and the item will
magically reappear! Cool isn't it? Unfortunately, this will only work for the
item you actually turned on, so you will have to go through your whole entire
inventory of items, and do this. Keep scrolling through each 'invisible' item
and turn them on, until you reach a point where you have gone in a complete
circle with your items. There will be no more blank spaces throughout your
whole Item List. This involves only that character, so if you plan on playing
GDL with a friend too, your friend must do the same with his character. Once
you turn off your XBOX console, the Item List will become 'invisible' again, so
you'll have to keep doing it over and over and over. =( Below is a list of all
the Special Items, a description of them, their cost, and what they look like
in a level.
