SECTION 1:  WELCOME TO BARBARIA
===============================

     An age of darkness beset Barbaria, its origin a mystery until now.
A man known as Zaugg is said to have woven magic so vile that the land
itself is eroding from its evil corruption. Prophecy foretold of this
wicked time, placing the only chance of salvation on the shoulders of
one hero of Barbaria. Heroes of Barbaria come in many forms and from
many places. Their motives to stop the madness forged by Zaugg are
more than ending his growing power. Who they are, why they quest, and
what they will become is destiny. Only one has the power to succeed!

     Those heroes of Barbaria are known as Barbarians. Their kind has
waged war since the dawn of time, ravaging the Earth as they battle
with weapon and magic alike! They stand fearless before the world,
wielding power and magic. With the coming of Zaugg, the call to battle
is made. Who is the Barbarian of prophecy? Prepare yourself, the
battle begins...

=========================================================
SECTION 2: THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE LONELY, AND THE WICKED
=========================================================

DAGAN of the Clan Dolok: Dagan is the last of the clan Dolok, losing
his wife at the hands of Zaugg's minions. Embittered by the cowardly
murder of his wife when away from his home in the Lost Fortress of
Skurlok, Dagan's lust for revenge knows no bound. Seething with anger,
Dagan seeks those behind her death. He will not rest until justice is
delivered!

KEELA, Princes of Argon: Keela's father, the King of Argos, died in
his quest to obtain the legendary Bloodsong. With it, he hoped to
restore power to his kingdom and then to Barbaria. His death weighs
heavily upon Keela, a sword master and princess. Somewhere in the
northern seas, far from their home in Shorestone Castle, Keela's father
died, but his quest did not end. Keela has taken up his quest for
Bloodsong!

EYARA, Nature's Guardian: As nature's guardian, Eyara protects the
forest and a powerful artifact known as Forestsong. Without family or
any connection outside the plants and creatures of earth, Eyara has
dedicated her life to champion the land itself. Disturbed by
aggressions made by minions of Zaugg and the wilting corrupting magic
pervading her otherwise Eden, Eyara must venture from her secluded life
in the Venomous Swamp to vanquish the evil!

CORATH, Apprentice to Zaugg: As an apprentice to Zaugg, Corath learned
arcane magic and the ways of combat. He awaited Zaugg's failing health
to end his life, so that he would rule in his place. Zaugg's work with
life and death discovered a way to cheat his imminent demise. Zaugg
inhabited a new powerful body, one that would far outlive Corath.
Jealous and furious, Corath fled and took refuge in the Land of
Desolation. He seeks the Elements of Ascendancy, ancient artifacts
with the power to destroy Zaugg and bring Barbaria to its knees before
him.

MAGNUS, Lord of the Undead: Once the scourge of Barbaria's Northern
Seas, warring against the kingdom of Argos, Magnus in a grand battle
against Argos' king himself fell to his death in an exchange of lethal
blows. Magnus would not fade into death at Shipwreck Waters, driven by
his determination to regain the stolen Bloodsong. The shroud of doom
falling over Barbaria has weakened the curse that kept Magnus from
pursuing Bloodsong. He has waited too long between life and death and
with his new freedom, his journey has only begun...

STITCH, Experiment of Zaugg: Zaugg was not born with the power he now
wields. He spent his life learning and exploring magic of light and
dark, of life and death itself. Only one creation of Zaugg's walks
with free will, and it is Stitch! From his resting place in the grave,
Zaugg pulled the life back into Stitch's decayed body. Stitch went
mad, hating his existence between the living and the dead. Making his
home in the Underground Sewers, Stitch lays plans to exact revenge on
Zaugg for putting him in this eternal torment. He will have his
revenge!

JINN, Demon of Naraka: The foul magic that pollutes Barbaria has
opened up a portal to the netherworld, a gate to the underworld.
Although the gate must be opened by summoning sorcery, there is nothing
that demands that the hell spawn must return. Escaping the abyssal
realm during one of Zaugg's mighty spells drawing upon her world's dark
force, Jinn does not intend to return. Her earthly home is in the
Lower Darklands, a place of infernal heat and destruction from
volcanoes and geysers of fire. Her role in the underworld was to
torment the souls of the damned, but now Jinn sees much more pleasure
in tormenting the living!

PHADE, Master Assassin: Moving in the shadows is the assassin, a
killer without remorse, a tool of murder - this is Phade. She found
comfort in the Spider's Lair, making it her home. Hired by Zaugg and
many others, Phade terminates any life for anyone given the right
price. Her exploits have earned her the fear of men throughout
Barbaria, but her thirst to perfect her art has recently turned to
relics, artifacts, and the power that Zaugg wields himself!

21, Orphaned Prisoner: Taken to the Prisons of Akrowla as an orphan,
21 knows nothing of his past - no home, no family, not even a name. He
was prisoner #21 and so became known as 21 whose home is in the Prisons
of Akrowla. The gloom that has spread throughout Barbaria has left the
ancient prison abandoned, letting 21 decide his destiny. He wants
revenge upon those that imprisoned him so long ago. Every fiber in his
massive physique seeks vengeance. Into the world he must go, searching
for his captors and tormentors alike!

MONGO, Transformed Monkey: The light heart of a little monkey is
buried within this carnivorous ape. Mongo loved to bask in the
sunlight beneath the trees near his home, The Forgotten Ruins. His
size demanded much food and Mongo found his fearful countenance and
need to eat so much made enemies of many. Unaware of the cloud
surrounding Barbaria, Mongo has found food is scarce and the sun is
dim. His world must be fixed. Mongo's adventure begins.

ZAUGG, Arch Mage: The aging wizard knew his demise was imminent and
that the apprentice Corath hoped to take control of the Eastern lands
of Barbaria upon his passing. Zaugg's research had focused on life and
death, and the world between occupied by the undead... His experiments
brought him to the ancient Spell of Divinity, through which he would
become immortal. His spell has been cast and time is running out for
Barbaria. The only force that stands in his way now is the foretold
hero of prophecy...

SECTION 3:  THE BASICS
======================

     Welcome to your lesson in the basic principles of combat,
barbarian.

MOVEMENT: Use the Left Analog Stick to move and the X Button to Jump.
You can steer your jumps, but running jumps are more difficult to
control then standing ones. Use the Team Circle below you to guide
where you land.

ATTACKS: The Square and the Triangle Button are your primary attacks.
Triangle Button attacks are slow, but more damaging than Square Button
attacks. By using different combinations of the Square and Triangle
Buttons, you can perform combos. Square Button, Square Button, Square
Button, and Triangle, Triangle Button, Triangle Button, Triangle
Button, are the basics of combos.

LIFE METER: When players are hit, life is subtracted from their life
meter. Your life meter is the Red Bar located in the upper-left hand
corner of the screen. When your life meter is empty, you will die.

BLOCKING: Try to block attacks when you cannot avoid them. Most can
be blocked, and often leave enemies with their guard down. To Block,
Hold down the L1 Button and push the Left Analog Stick towards your
opponent.

GRABS: The Square Button is used to grab objects and players, as well
as climb and hang from the arena. To Grab Objects or Throw Players,
just move next to them and press the Square Button. Pressing the
Square Button again will release objects you hold.

HANGING AND CLIMBING: To climb and hang from a ceiling or pole, first
jump near the ceiling or pole you wish to grab and then press the
Circle Button. Press the Circle Button again to release the ceiling or
the pole, or the Square Button or Triangle Button to attack.

======================
SECTION 4:  THE COMBOS
======================

     Welcome to you lesson in combos and runes, barbarian. Combos are
performed with different combinations of the Square Button and the
Triangle Buttons. When you attack with the Square and Triangle
Buttons, you can link it to another attack with the Square or Triangle
Button. You can link it to another attack by pressing the Square or
Triangle Button again before the previous attack finishes. By linking
attacks in this manner, you can perform combos up to 6 hits long. Each
character has 8 combos. If the last attack of a combo hits the enemy,
it is accompanied by a special sound and a colored flash. These
effects identify each combo.

WEAK COMBO: Your weak combo is accompanied by a white burst. It is
the easiest to perform, and does normal damage.

STRONG COMBO: Your strong combo is also accompanied by a white burst.
It is also the easiest to perform, and does a little above normal
damage.

STUN COMBO: This combo is accompanied by a yellow burst. Opponents
will recover from stun combos slowly, giving you time to breathe in
battle. Thugs are stunned extra long, giving you extra time to grab
them.

PUSHBACK COMBO: This combo is accompanied by an orange burst. It
sends your opponent rolling away so you can concentrate on other nearby
enemies.

QUICK COMBO: This combo is accompanied by an aqua burst. It is faster
than a normal combo and ideal for juggling opponents.

MAGIC COMBO: This combo is accompanied by a blue burst. It recharges
your magic meter much faster than a normal attack would.

LEAK COMBO: This combo is accompanied by a red burst. It does damage
to your opponents, even if they try to block you.

POP UP COMBO: This combo is accompanied by a green burst. It will
launch your opponents into the air, allowing you to follow with attacks
that juggle your opponent.

     If you forget a combo during play, pause the game with the Start
Button and review your Move List. It lists all of your combos and
describes what they do. All combos are derived from eight bases.
(Square, Square, and Square), (Square, Triangle, and Triangle),
(Square, Square, and Triangle), (Square, Triangle, and Square), and
(Triangle, Triangle, and Triangle), (Triangle, Square, and Square),
(Triangle, Triangle, and Square), and (Triangle, Square, Triangle).
When a combo is longer than three hits, the last hit is repeated over
and over until the combo ends. This may help you remember them.

===============================
SECTION 5: THE MAGIC AND RUNES
===============================

     Welcome to your lesson is magic, barbarian. Each Character has
two special attacks and four rune attacks. These are called magic
attacks. To use magic attacks, you must have enough magic in your
magic meter, which is located beneath your life meter.

PUSH ATTACK: Your first special attack is a push attack. Use it when
you are being overwhelmed by your opponents. You can even use the push
attack while you are being hit. Push the Square Button + X Button at
the same time.

RANGED ATTACK: Your second special attack is a ranged attack that
throws projectiles at your opponents. Tap the R1 Button to fire a
single projectile. Or hold the R1 Button down to charge and release a
more powerful projectile attack

     You may have noticed your magic meter reducing as you use magic
attacks. Magic regenerates slowly by default, but you can speed this
up in one of three ways. First, by taking damage or by inflicting
damage on others. Second, by completing a magic combo on your
opponent. Third, by raising your magic attribute in Quest Mode.

     In play, you will sometimes see symbols that appear over your
characters. These are called Runes. Earned Runes will appear above
your magic meter. If you have enough magic, both your magic meter and
Rune will glow. When they glow, you can press the R2 Button to release
a Rune Attack. There are four Runes that you can acquire. They are
Combo Runes, Throw Runes, Object Runes, and Counter Runes. You earn
them by performing different actions in combat.

COMBO RUNE: To earn this Rune, complete any combo on your opponent.
The Rune gained here will look like a Pink Colored ([]). Press the R2
Button to release the Rune Attack.

THROW RUNE: To earn this Rune, you must throw any opponent. The Rune
symbol gained here will look like an Aqua Colored (U). Press the R2
Button to release the Rune Attack.

OBJECT RUNE: To earn this Rune, you must successfully attack an
opponent with an object. The Rune symbol gained here will look like an
Orange Colored (X). Press the R2 Button to release the Rune Attack.

COUNTER RUNE: To earn this Rune, you must successfully counter your
opponent. The Rune symbol gained here will look like a Green Colored
(/\). Press the R2 Button to release the Rune Attack.

     Try using these runes in practice mode to learn what they do.
Often, the effect of a Rune Attack is described in text beneath your
magic bar.

=================================
SECTION 6: THE OBJECTS AND GRABS
=================================

     Welcome to your lesson in advanced principles of objects and
grabs, barbarian. Some objects are too heavy to lift at first. There
is still more to learn with objects as you earn levels with Quest Mode.
You can raise your lift attribute to lift, run, and perform combos with
heavier objects and thugs.

OBJECT WEIGHT: When you stand near an object, an arrow appears above
it. Arrows describe the weight of each object. Green arrows represent
light objects, yellow arrows describe medium objects, and red arrows
represent heavy objects.

     There are two types of objects. They are objects that you can
swing and objects that you can throw.

SWING OBJECT: Swing objects are held in front of you. Use the Square
Button to attack with swing objects, or the Triangle Button to plant
them upright in the ground.

THROW OBJECT: Throw objects are carried over your head. Use the
Square Button or Triangle Button to attack by throwing the object.

     Thugs can also be used as objects. Just grab them with the Square
Button after knocking them to the ground. You can swing thugs at your
opponents with the Square Button or throw thugs with the Triangle
Button. To release a held thug, push the Circle Button to put the thug
down.

========================
SECTION 7:  THE COUNTERS
========================

     Welcome to your lesson in counters, barbarian. To attempt a
counter, block, and then tap either attack button. If you trigger your
counter attempt right before a standard attack hits you, you will
counter that attack. However, counters do not work against air or
magic attacks.

COUNTER ATTACK: L1 + Square Button or Triangle Button

==========================
SECTION 8:  THE ATTRIBUTES
==========================

1.  TRAGEDY
+++++++++++

     Dagan returns to find his wife in a bloodied heap, apparently
given a slow and tortuous death at the hands of assassin Phade.
Phade's grin suggests she enjoyed this assignment, and apparently
includes Dagan's demise as well...

2A.  DARK MAGIC
+++++++++++++++

     His heart heavy, Phade's dying words weighing on him so, Dagan
wondered how could some foul magic command him and his wife to die
without him ever knowing why? The assassin Phade failed to slay Dagan,
though his wife laid dead before him. If this Phade knew magic was
behind his wife's murder, then he knew the answer lied in the east...home
to the necromancers. Dagan traveled to its capital in the Land of
Desolation, where he met the wizard, known as Corath, told Dagan that
his wife died only because Dagan was not there...he grinned and explained
that as long as Dagan live, all he cared for would die... enraged,
Dagan attacked the wizard!

     Phade's last words pierced Dagan's woe-stricken heart... he had only
touched the evil that slew his wife by striking the assassin down. She
claimed a greater evil beyond death and of grave magic wished Dagan and
his wife dead. If this power was beyond death, then surely the undead
in the Underground Sewers would have answers! Dagan decided to see if
the legendary living dead, Stitch, was behind this foul act! He found
him, but Stitch refused to speak with Dagan... determined to learn what
Stitch knew, Dagan attacked Stitch hoping to "persuade" him to talk.

found a parchment stuck to a cracked skull with a rusted dagger. It
was an order to bring Princess Keela to the Prisons of Akrowla for
torture and eventual death. Dagan could not let this girl die, and so

Dagan journeyed into the Venomous Swamps, where a witch was said to

magic, Dagan was discouraged. Perhaps a better path would be to seek
the wisdom of Keela, Princess of Argos. He found Keela quite a warrior

slay his wife, but would tell him only when he proved worthy of the
knowledge.  They fought...

His choices were not the best, for now Keela was dead... just like his
wife, but Dagan could have saved the princess. He let her die. He
thought to retreat to the Forgotten Ruins to consider his actions. His
meditation was interrupted by an apparition of a forlorn woman. It was
the ghost of Keela! She bemoaned Dagan for abandoning her and told him
that now he must die... she dew her sword and attacked!

wife, Dagan marched with abandon across the harsh lands of Barbaria...
without rest or sleep, until he finally came upon the dark under earth
known as the Spider's Lair. Barely had he entered the mouth of the

     Heeding Eyara's words, Dagan sought the demon she spoke of in the
Lower Dark Lands. The air was thick, full of ash and smoke from the
volcanic geysers that filled the land. Black lava rocks crunched
beneath his feat as he delved deeper into the heart of darkness, where
he found the demon Jinn. Her dark fiery skin pitch eyes were clearly
of Naraka, the hell of Barbaria. Jinn told Dagan that she needed
mortal's blood to fulfill her master's wish, and that his blood would
do fine...the demon attacked.
